The beauty of Upasana is we don’t even have to get out of bed to do it! A practical meditation method woven so seamlessly into our lives that not even we notice it being there. Adi Shankara described Upasana as that meditation where “whatever is meditated upon” is completely identified, absorbed with Self, and unified with as much as one identifies self-consciousness with one’s body. The two that become one, the “you are that”. The “someone or something” in Upasana can be a symbolic deity or

Just remembering the breath and closing the eyes doesn't mark the beginning of contemplation,

Meditation,

Consciousness,

Always there.

We don't have to wait for consciousness,

Our sounds,

Ever present.

While the breath comes and goes,

Consciousness,

Presence,

That presence in which everything is present,

Yourself,

Always there,

Ever fresh,

Ever whole and complete.

There is no time when you are not complete.

Making us feel incomplete is one thought,

The thought of myself.

Thinking completeness lies somewhere else.

It makes me feel inadequate,

Incomplete.

Thinking my wholeness belongs in some other place.

I keep on chasing it,

Forgetting myself,

The completeness itself.

Ever present,

There is no time when consciousness is not,

There is no time in consciousness,

Timeless,

Ever existing,

Ever fresh.

Just feeling the breath coming and going.

Feel the coolness,

The freshness in the nostrils of each breath.

Notice how the moment you focus your attention,

Your awareness,

The mind relaxes.

Feeling the body resting on the earth.

Wherever you are,

Just feel the earth supporting everything unconditionally.

Breath comes and goes.

You don't have to worry about breathing.

Breathing is absolutely effortless,

Just like one's existence here and now is absolutely effortless.

You don't have to be anybody to exist.

It's role-free,

Conditionless awareness.

There are no conditions in consciousness,

Awareness.

Feel how earth supports the body unconditionally.

There's no conflict anywhere.

Conflict is always in the imagination of the one getting conflicted.

It doesn't exist in awareness.

Only in a thought,

A memory,

An idea.

Feel the heart beating effortlessly.

You don't have to do a thing.

Now just bring your awareness to the back of your throat.

Feel the coolness in the back of your throat.

Just by moving your awareness,

Consciousness doesn't move.

Only our awareness changes.

Consciousness stays still,

Permanent,

Ever-present.

No matter where we place our attention.

Being present never changes.

Always whole and complete.

Now just bring the awareness to your lungs.

Feel the coolness in your lungs.

With each breath,

Breathing comes and goes,

Like the tides in the ocean.

You don't need to do anything to breathe.

But consciousness never comes or goes.

Always the same.

The one looking never changes.

Only what we are looking at keeps changing.

Now just bring in our awareness back to the nostrils.

Feel the coolness in the nostrils again.

Effortless.

Let go of the need to do anything.

Let go of the need to undo anything.

And let go the need to let go.

Just feel how effortless it is being.

Nothing is required to be yourself.

The consciousness is already there.

With or without the thoughts.

With and without identification.

You are always whole and complete.

The completeness itself.

You've got no option but to be that.

Now just bring in our awareness to the sounds around us.

Listen to any sound.

It will be the sound of the wind blowing,

The trees,

The sound of my voice,

Birds in the distance,

Traffic,

Any sound.

Pay attention please to the sound.

If there's no sound,

Pay attention to the silence between or behind the sounds.

Listening to all the sounds,

We forget about the silence.

It's always there.

Absorbing all sounds.

Silence never gets affected.

No matter how many sounds come and go,

Or how big the sounds,

Nothing changes the fullness and completeness of silence.

The sound doesn't add anything to silence,

Nor does it take it away.

Taking nothing,

Giving nothing,

Sounds just come and go by themselves,

Accommodated in the fullness of silence.

Just like all the thoughts we have,

Coming and going.

Don't give anything,

Nor do they take anything away from consciousness.

Always full.

All and complete.

With or without the thoughts,

Just like the silence.

Always changeless.

In amongst all the changing sounds,

Silence remains.

Everwhere.

Whole.

Complete.

Nothing can affect the silence.

Nothing ever has done anything to silence.

No matter how many sounds have come and gone,

Nothing changes in silence.

So too,

The space in which we find ourselves existing,

In which all form exists,

No matter how many forms,

Or how big the forms are,

Silence never,

I mean,

Space never changes.

Thinking space is empty,

You discover space alone is the fullness itself.

The forms are empty.

Coming and going in the fullness of space,

Just like the sounds,

Come and go in the fullness of silence.

So too,

The forms existing in space,

Accommodated by space,

Given dimension by space,

All come and go in its completeness.

Same with consciousness,

In which all the thoughts are appearing.

Born in consciousness,

All thoughts and memories,

Emotions,

All have to disappear again,

Into the fullness of consciousness.

Self.

How old is silence?

How many sounds have come and gone in the silence?

Older than any sound is that in which all sounds appear,

Timeless,

Ageless,

Beginningless.

Listening to the silence,

The same silence now,

Is the same silence that's ever been.

Never changing.

No matter what age or civilization,

Silence has never changed.

Conflict free.

Always there.

Regardless of the sounds.

So too,

The space in which all objects appear,

Never disappears.

How old is space?

Where does space begin?

Where does it end?

Beginningless,

Endless.

That in which everything finds its beginning,

In which everything finds dimension,

Itself remains beginningless,

Endless,

Dimensionless,

Ageless.

There is no time when silence or space did not exist.

So too,

There is no time when consciousness is not.

That in which all the thoughts and ideas we have keep on appearing,

Remaining invisible,

Unseen,

The seer yourself of time itself remains ever one,

Changeless.

Having never been born,

It never dies.

Only the thoughts and ideas and the objects to which they relate,

Having been born in time,

Must eventually end in time.

All things born in time must eventually,

Out of necessity,

Disappear.

But that which never disappears is consciousness,

Which has no appearance,

No attributes,

Yet everything appears in it,

Subtler than all the sounds appearing in the silence,

Subtler than all the forms appearing in space,

Is the seer,

The listener,

The conscious,

Subtler than the subtlest,

Is yourself,

Always there,

Always still,

Permanent,

Undisturbed,

No matter what hurricanes are blowing in the mind.

A thought can become a cyclone,

But no thought can ever affect the consciousness in which it appears,

Just like no cyclone can ever affect space.

No thought,

No matter how big or how conflicted it makes me feel,

Nothing can ever affect me,

The self-consciousness.

Coming back to the breath,

Just feel the breath moving effortlessly,

Going on a journey through time,

Space,

Silence.

We never left or went anywhere,

Like the highway on which all the traffic is traveling,

Consciousness never moves,

Consciousness on which all the thoughts are traveling,

All the ideas,

Never goes anywhere,

Ever present,

Effortless.

We don't have to do anything,

We don't have to wait for consciousness,

We have to wait for a thought,

An idea to arrive,

But you don't have to wait for consciousness to arrive,

It's already there,

Always,

In all ways.

Just feeling the earth underneath your body,

Feel the body resting on the earth,

Or whatever you're resting on,

Feel the earth supporting you,

Earth hasn't gone anywhere,

You don't have to do anything to be on the earth,

Effortless.

Where do you have to go to be on the earth?

Likewise,

Where do you have to go to be conscious?

Anywhere is good enough.

Always,

One,

Changeless,

Permanent,

Still,

Ever gained,

Whole and complete.

Om Shanti,

Shanti,

Shanti,

Shanti,

Shanti,

Shanti,

Just opening the eyes,

If you like.
