Welcome to this playful meditation designed to practice mindfulness while embracing the unexpected.

To remind us that life doesn't always go as planned and that's okay.

Today we'll lean into that idea,

Letting go of expectations,

Allowing laughter,

And maybe even surprising ourselves.

I invite you to find a comfortable position.

You can sit,

Or stand,

Or lie down.

You just can't be operating heavy machinery or driving.

Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze and take a deep breath in and a slow full exhale out.

Good.

Now let's begin.

Start by feeling the surface beneath you.

Feel yourself sinking into that support,

Into stillness,

Or maybe you're floating.

Who knows what today will bring.

And imagine just for fun that your chair,

Or your cushion,

Or your surface beneath you is a giant fluffy marshmallow.

Soft,

Pillowy,

Squishy,

And holding you perfectly.

Take a deep breath in,

Filling your belly.

Maybe you smell the sugary sweetness of the marshmallow.

Now exhale with a sigh as you sink deeper into your confectionery seat.

Again,

Breathe in deeply and exhale.

Wait,

No,

Hold it,

Hold it.

No,

Just kidding.

You can let it out.

Notice how your mind reacted.

Did you expect a normal meditation?

Did I just break your focus?

That's okay.

That's the point.

This is the mind at play.

It anticipates,

Predicts,

And tries to make sense of things.

But what if,

Just for a moment,

You let go of the need to know what comes next?

Breathe in again,

And as you exhale,

Soften into that uncertainty.

What if the unknown wasn't something to resist,

But something to welcome?

Could you allow yourself to be okay with surprise?

Breathe in again,

And as you exhale,

Soften into that uncertainty.

Now let's try something a little different.

Take a breath in,

And as you exhale,

Make a sound.

Any sound,

Maybe a sigh,

A hum,

A funny noise.

I can't hear you,

So go for it.

Notice the sound you made.

Was it soft,

Loud,

Awkward,

Playful?

Did you make a sound?

Did you resist?

Did you hesitate?

Maybe a little voice in your head whispered,

That's ridiculous.

Or maybe you embraced it fully,

Enjoying the freedom of expression.

Now take another breath in,

And this time as you exhale,

Release any self-consciousness along with your sound.

Let it be unfiltered,

Unrestrained,

Unplugged,

Fully yours.

What does it feel like when you give yourself permission to be silly,

To be ridiculous,

To be spontaneous?

So much of life is spent filtering,

Adjusting,

Controlling.

But right now,

In this moment,

You don't have to.

Breathe in again,

Filling your body with this sense of play,

And exhale knowing that presence isn't about perfection,

It's about allowing yourself to be.

What happens when you stop trying to get it right,

And just experience what is?

Now let's switch it up.

Breathe in through your nose,

And out through your ear.

Wait,

That's not possible,

But just for this moment,

Imagine that it is.

Did you notice it?

Even though it's impossible,

Your mind almost made it real.

Maybe you felt a tingling in your ear,

Or your breath seemed lighter,

Stranger,

Or more expansive.

That's the power of imagination.

The body follows where the mind leads.

So what else could shift if you allowed yourself to think differently?

What if stress was just a sensation floating by like a cloud?

What if obstacles were invitations to see things in a new way?

What if for just a moment,

Nothing was as rigid as it seemed?

Take another breath in,

And this time let it move wherever it wants.

Nose,

Fingertips,

Toes,

Heart,

No rules,

No expectations,

Just curiosity.

Exhale and let that sense of openness settle in.

If a single playful thought can shift your experience,

Imagine what's possible when you let your mind expand beyond its usual limits.

Let's play with the mind a little bit more.

Bring to mind the image of a calm,

Serene lake.

The water is smooth,

Peaceful,

Until splash!

A fish jumps out,

Waves at you with a quick wink and a nod of the head,

And slips back beneath the surface.

You watch the ripples spread across the lake.

Did you try to make sense of the fish?

Did your mind resist the absurdity?

Or did you simply enjoy it?

Now consider this.

Life is full of waving fish,

Unexpected moments,

Sudden detours,

Things that just don't make sense.

What if instead of resisting surprises,

You welcomed them with curiosity,

Smiled at the absurdity?

Take a breath in,

Letting this thought ripple through you.

Exhale and allow yourself to soften into life's unpredictability.

The lake always finds stillness again,

And so can you.

Now imagine your thoughts are like little tricksters,

Sneaking in when you least expect it.

One whispers,

You should be serious right now.

Another says,

This isn't how meditation works.

And yet,

Here you are,

Breathing,

Being,

Aware.

Notice the joke your mind tries to play on you,

That things must be a certain way,

But they don't.

Let that realization sink in.

Life,

Like this meditation,

Is full of surprises.

The trick is to welcome them.

What if you smiled at them,

Invited them in,

Ushered them out,

Without getting caught up in their story,

In their expectations?

Take another deep breath in.

Exhale,

Settling into the freedom of knowing that you are not your thoughts.

You are the awareness behind them.

Take one more deep breath in,

And sigh it out.

As you return to your day,

Carry this lateness with you.

The world may play little jokes on you today.

Traffic,

Delays,

Unexpected twists.

But what if you met them with a smile?

What if you allowed the unexpected to be part of the fun?

As you're ready,

Gently float your eyes open,

And step into your day with a playful heart.

The universe loves a good joke.

You might as well be in on it.
