One of the most profound ways we learn isn’t through information, but through insight. Insights sit at the heart of the Three Principles, the foundation of Liz’s work. In today’s 5 Minutes in Nature, she reflects on the nature of insight — what it is, why it matters, and how we create the conditions for insights to arise.

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.

It is a coolish day in November and I'm just looking westwards beyond the hill that is Western Beacon and there is a sort of yellowy brightness in the sky which is otherwise a leaden grey.

If I turn myself away from that little bit of lighter sky towards the south it has just this sort of grey murkiness that is limiting the view I've got that's just hanging all around and I'm turning once again west and just looking at that brightness in the sky because that is where the sun will be going down very soon.

It's really hard getting a walk in during the daylight at the moment.

I've not still not quite adjusted my timings to when it gets dark.

It gets dark so quickly here in Devon and so it's so good to get out and it's still daylight.

And today I want to talk to you about insights.

Insights,

Well what is an insight?

An insight is a shift of perception from within.

It's when there's something that shifts within your deeper intelligence and you have one of those aha moments.

It's not a cognitive process,

It's not something you think through with your mind,

It's a shift in something internal.

And what comes through when you have an insight is you'll get some fresh thought,

New ideas come through.

And insights are a kind of learning that are central to the inside out understanding or the three principles.

One of the things that Sidney Banks saw when he had this transformational experience,

He literally in a split second saw through thought.

He realised he went from thinking he was an insecure person to realising the power of thought,

The power of thought to create insecurity.

And it was like he slipped through into a different dimension and saw something so different about life.

And one of the things that he realised was that those kinds of learning,

Where you see through something from a different level,

Like he saw through thought on a different level,

It took him to a completely different place,

Those experiences are insight.

And when insight occurs you learn something that is deeply moving,

Profoundly moving sometimes.

And it happens at a level beyond your intellect.

And the inside out understanding is all about insight,

It's about people realising two things.

Realising that they are deeply okay,

You are deeply okay,

At your core you are wise,

Intuitive,

Compassionate and love.

And also realising the power of thought to create the illusion that you're not,

To create the stories that take you away from that sense of who you truly are.

And insight is the way that you see through the power of stories,

The power of thought,

Back to who you truly are.

And one of the things that people often want is they want insights.

It's like they come to talk with me and they go,

I really want an insight around this.

But what you can't do when you're listening to someone is you can't give them an insight.

What you can do however is create the best possible chances for an insight to arise.

A very simple example is that I've just recently put out two bird feeders,

One of them with sunflower seeds,

One of them with mealworms.

I love watching the birds feed and we've never put out bird feeders ourselves but next door used to have bird feeders.

They've now since moved and we miss seeing the birds lining up on our fence waiting to go to the bird feeder.

So today I thought I'm going to put up two bird feeders and we'll encourage the birds back into our garden.

And so far not one bird has landed on the bird feeder,

Not one.

So in a way I've created the best possible opportunity for birds to come and visit but even though I've done that they haven't arrived.

And it's the same with insight,

The best possible way for insights to arise is by not overthinking.

It's about finding opportunities for your mind to settle and when your mind settles fresh thinking arises but a bit like the bird feeders the insight isn't guaranteed.

So today is just a reminder about the power of insight,

That insights arise,

They come from a different dimension and the best possible way of getting an insight is not to engage in overthinking and to bring the mind to a settled space.

That's when insights can emerge.
