Stoic Contemplations For Emotional Resilience - by Jon Brooks

COURSE

Stoic Contemplations For Emotional Resilience

With Jon Brooks

Stoic philosophy developed a set of exercises for meeting life more deliberately. This course guides you through a morning routine, an evening review, premeditation of adversity, mortality, the View from Above, the ideal of the sage and the Stoic account of the passions. These are contemplative practices for reflection and emotional resilience. They are not psychotherapy and they do not promise to treat an anxiety disorder. Use one lesson at a time, then keep the practice that proves useful in your own life.

Lesson 1

Virtue: What Are You Trying To Become?

This lesson introduces the Stoic aim of virtue and the four qualities the tradition treats as central: wisdom, courage, justice and self-control. Consider what each one asks of you in an ordinary decision, then choose one quality to practise today.

Lesson 2

Build A Stoic Morning Practice

Build a Stoic morning practice around intention, reflection and preparation for the day ahead. The aim is not an elaborate routine. It is a short way to remember what kind of person you want to be before events start making demands on you.

Lesson 3

Review The Day Without Punishing Yourself

Use an evening review to look back at what you thought, said and did without turning reflection into self-punishment. Notice what went well, where you drifted from your values and one thing you would handle differently tomorrow.

Lesson 4

Rehearse Adversity Before It Arrives

Premeditation of adversity means considering a possible setback before it arrives. This lesson guides you to rehearse one difficulty, identify the response still available to you and reduce the shock of being caught unprepared.

Lesson 5

Let Mortality Clarify The Day

Reflect on mortality as a way to clarify what deserves your time now. This is not an instruction to force gratitude or dwell on fear. You will use the fact that time is limited to notice what matters and what can be left alone. Go slowly, and stop if the exercise feels unhelpful today.

Lesson 6

See Your Life As Part Of A Larger Whole

The contemplation of the whole widens the frame around a problem. You will place your own concerns inside a larger view of people, time and the world, then return to the situation with a little more proportion. The practice is not meant to dismiss what hurts. It is a way to see it without letting it fill the entire picture.

Lesson 7

Use The Sage As A Standard, Not An Idol

The Stoic sage is an ideal used to test a choice, not a standard for perfection. Imagine how a person with wisdom, courage, justice and self-control might respond to a situation you are facing. Then choose one part of that response you can practise yourself, without pretending you have to become a flawless Stoic.

Lesson 8

How The Stoics Worked With Strong Emotion

The Stoics treated strong emotions as connected to judgements about what is happening and what it means. This lesson explores how to notice those judgements, question them and create a little more choice before you act. It is philosophical reflection, not psychotherapy, and it does not ask you to suppress what you feel.

Hellenic philosophy was always my favorite because through it I have learned the part of all of the philosophy I know which matters the most to me: living a well lived life. Although, I think I wasn’t actually capable of putting to practice but after I got the news about me having a hernia, that, I knew I had caused myself. That was the cornerstone of my change, even after terrible situations I put myself through early adulthood. I thank you for making this practical course. It’s not easy for a philosopher to step aside from so many teachings. You’ve made a pretty cool course accessible and appealing for all audiences. That’s amazing!
