Hello and welcome.

Today I want to talk about something that often gets pushed aside amid the daily hustle of caregiving.

Self-care.

As parents and caregivers of neurodivergent children,

You know that your days are filled with endless tasks,

Constant demands,

Routines,

And schedules.

So it becomes easy to forget about the one person who needs care the most,

And that person is you.

Self-care is a topic that many are tempted to reject immediately because it's misunderstood.

For many of us,

Until we learn otherwise,

Self-care is misinterpreted as an indulgence or even an act of selfishness,

Or that taking care of yourself means you're neglecting your responsibilities,

Or that you're neglecting your child's needs.

How can you address your child's needs from a place of exhaustion,

Frustration,

Or irritability?

And are you really making a positive difference in their life if that's the way you're functioning on a daily basis?

Is that really the way you want to show up for your child?

I'm going to say no,

It isn't.

So I'd like to start by rethinking what self-care really means,

Because self-care is a vital part of your caregiving role.

When you take moments to prioritize your well-being,

You're actually strengthening your ability to then support the ones you love.

It's the same concept as putting on your own oxygen mask on an airplane before assisting someone else with theirs.

Every time you make a decision to pause,

To breathe,

Or to do something just for you,

Even if it's something small,

You are planting a seed that will eventually grow into a source of strength and resilience.

It could be as simple as taking a short walk,

Enjoying a quiet cup of tea,

Or spending a few moments journaling your thoughts.

These actions are not extravagant or time-consuming,

But they're practical ways to recharge.

I especially want to challenge the idea that self-care has to be complicated or expensive.

Instead,

Consider self-care as everyday habits that restore your energy and empower you.

You might ask yourself,

What truly replenishes my spirit?

For some,

It could be reading a book or listening to music.

For others,

It might mean carving out a few minutes to sit in silence and reflect on the beginning or the end of your day.

And I also want to mention that self-care does not have to be something you do alone.

You can find ways to connect with others,

And that can also replenish your soul and reinvigorate you.

The key is finding what resonates with you personally.

So I invite you to take a moment and reflect on this.

When was the last time you did something solely for your well-being,

Solely with yourself in mind?

If you can't remember,

Then I urge you to start today.

And now,

What is at least one simple act you can do for yourself that can reinvigorate you?

It's important to recognize that taking care of yourself isn't a luxury.

It's a necessity.

When you commit to self-care,

You're reclaiming a part of yourself that might have been overshadowed by the constant demands of parenting and caregiving.

This is your opportunity to regain control and tap into the power that comes from nurturing your own mind and body.

Self-care is an essential,

Non-negotiable part of your life as a caregiver.

It's not about spending a lot of money or having endless free time.

It's about making small,

Deliberate choices that honor your well-being.

Every time you choose to care for yourself,

You reinforce your strength,

Enhance your resilience,

And ultimately become a better caregiver,

Someone who is available in a healthy way.

So before we wrap up,

I encourage you to hold on to this thought.

When you care for yourself,

You're better equipped to care for your child.

I hope this talk has given you a new perspective and one that transforms self-care from an afterthought into a core part of your daily routine.

Thank you for taking these few moments to reflect on the importance of prioritizing your own well-being.

And if you have someone in your life who needs a gentle nudge closer toward themselves from time to time,

I invite you to share the perspective you gained today with them.

In fact,

I'd love to hear about what self-care looks like for you.

Feel free to share it as a comment and help give other parents and caregivers ideas about the small and impactful ways that they can take care of themselves.

As always,

Wishing you all the best on your caregiving journey going forward.

See you next time.
