You don't need to fall asleep.

If sleep comes,

It comes.

If it doesn't,

That's okay too.

Right now your only job is to lie here and let your body be heavy.

There is nothing to fix.

Nothing to achieve.

Just this moment.

If your mind is busy,

That's not a problem.

You're not doing this wrong.

A tired mind doesn't switch off on command.

It slows down gradually,

Like a room dimming,

Not a light snapping off.

So we're not trying to sleep.

We're just creating the conditions where sleep might happen.

Notice where your body is touching the bed.

The back of your head,

Your shoulders,

Your hips,

Your legs.

You don't need to relax them.

Just notice them.

If your jaw is clenched,

You don't need to force it open.

Just let it be exactly as it is.

Sometimes the body lets go once it realises it is not being pressured.

Take a slow breath in through your nose.

And let it out through your mouth.

Not deep,

Not dramatic,

Just slower than before.

Again,

Take a deep slow breath in through your nose.

And let it out through your mouth.

There's nothing you need to think about tonight.

Nothing you need to remember.

Nothing you need to prepare for.

Everything that couldn't be solved today will still be there tomorrow.

And you don't need to deal with it now.

If thoughts arrive,

Let them.

You don't need to chase them away.

Imagine them like passing cars outside a window.

You notice them and then they move on.

And you stay here.

Your body knows how to sleep.

Even if it's forgotten lately.

Even if nights have been broken,

That knowledge is still there.

It doesn't disappear.

It just waits for safety.

Let your shoulders sink a little deeper into the bed.

Not by effort,

Just by allowing gravity to do what it already knows how to do.

Let your hands rest.

Your fingers don't need to hold anything.

Nothing needs gripping tonight.

If you wake later in the night,

This sound will still be here.

Steady and changing.

You don't need to listen for it.

It's simply keeping you company.

There's nowhere you need to go.

No version of you you need to become.

For the next few hours,

You are allowed to disappear from responsibility.

If sleep comes now,

That's fine.

If it comes later,

That's fine too.

Your body will take what it needs.

And if you're still awake,

Just let yourself rest here.

Breathing.

Being held by the bed.
