After twenty years of meditation and about as much time on the spiritual path, I became desperate enough to pray for peace and love above all things. It was precisely then that I was guided to hold vigil over the spiritual heart, on the right side of the chest - what Ramana Maharshi called the 'seat of consciousness.' The heart is indeed our eternal throne, but it is also a portal into a radically new way of being in the world. It will never be through the mind, but only ever through the heart that our true nature as sat-chit-ananda or being-consciousness-bliss can be known. I invite you to walk through the cosmic doorway and meet me in our inner wellspring- the heart of hearts at the centre of all creation.

I invite you to find a comfortable position,

One which allows your body to fully relax and let go.

Allow yourself to check in with your body now,

To see if there are any parts of it that wish to relax,

And relinquish those pockets of tension,

Wherever they might be,

In your face or neck,

Maybe in your shoulder,

Arms or hands.

Simply taking a moment to feel down your chest,

Your abdomen,

Your hips,

Noticing if there is any unnecessary tension,

Any unnecessary holding down through the legs and through the feet,

Simply creating a space in which everything can open and relax if it wishes to,

Not forcing or insisting on anything.

I invite you now to bring your attention into your heart space,

Not the anatomical heart,

But your spiritual heart,

On the right side of your chest,

What Ramana called the seed of consciousness,

From which our I-self emerges and to which it ultimately returns.

Gently bring your attention to this space now and simply notice how it feels.

Is it numb or raw?

Light or heavy?

Weary or strong?

Even if your deeper heart feels like it's encased in stone or armor,

Trust me when I say that your awareness has the power to break it open.

All that is required is that you continue to bring your attention back to the heart space as best as you can,

Trusting that each moment of contact is a welcome invitation.

Each act of returning allows the heart to express itself more and more fully,

To reveal different facets of itself,

And to shapeshift and bear its hidden gems.

Our heart is the source of ultimate intelligence,

Because it is where you and Source,

You and the universe,

You and everything else in creation are one.

As you rest in the spiritual heart,

This truth of unity is no longer an intellectual knowing,

But a felt Gnostic experience.

When you're connected to the heart of hearts,

You're also opening to a constant flow of peace,

Joy,

And happiness.

Can you feel a glimmering of these states now?

Can you feel the Satchitananda,

Or being consciousness and bliss,

Of your true nature?

Exploring now,

With a gentle,

Inviting curiosity and non-judgment,

From this inner fountain flows the ultimate source of fulfillment,

Nourishment,

And nurturance.

Open and receive your divine inheritance now.

We may have spent our entire lives ignoring the heart,

Unaware of its magnificent beauty and power,

So we need to make a conscious choice to turn inward,

And orient back to a place we may have forgotten.

If we're seeking the respite of this secret refuge through a meditation technique,

Or through our senses,

Or some transcendent state,

Through any experience that can come and go,

We will forever be walking past this cosmic entryway,

Your eternal throne,

The gateway to the redemption of suffering.

The cherished secret at the core of life doesn't come and go,

It doesn't change,

And it certainly doesn't demand anything of you.

Allow yourself to feel the exquisite gentleness,

The love,

And the radiant light of this precious jewel.

The heart is your inner wellspring,

The gateless gate,

The hidden face of the living goddess.

Feel your heart opening,

And allow its current of love to flow.

Allow your whole being,

Physical,

Mental,

And emotional,

To receive this nourishment of beauty directly from Source.

Your very heart is the ultimate medicine,

And that medicine is you.

Presence is the ultimate balm,

And unlike an external healer,

Your own felt sense of aliveness,

Your heart's vitality is always here,

Available now.

Any experience that you may be holding in the body,

Any numbness,

Armoring,

Pain,

Or tension,

Allow all of that to be held by this eternal embrace.

There's nothing you need to do,

Or fix,

Or change.

Simply letting go,

And opening up,

And allowing the heart to do what it does best,

Alchemizing all denser energies back into the current of love.

The heart is a portal into a new way of being in the world,

Of living with greater harmony,

Peace,

And ease.

It is a gateway to true rest in the arms of your beloved higher self,

A return to the living Eden.

Whether your mind is aware of it or not,

Your soul has been holding vigil over this sacred flame.

No matter how many times you may have turned away from it,

Resisted it,

Or looked for it outside of yourself,

You have known deep down that the redemption you've been longing for has always been buried within you.

Perhaps you have pretended not to know,

For whatever silly game of hide-and-seek.

Because,

Well,

Maybe you thought it would be more fun that way.

But here you are remembering that there's always been,

And always will be,

A sanctuary where you can eternally rest your weary head.

And there's no need to go into judgment about why it took so long,

Or where else you thought you needed to look.

Because all that matters is that you're here now,

Looking with the eyes of love,

At love,

Seeing your true face at last.

And the funny thing is,

As momentous as this seeing and being seen can feel,

As juicy and warm and bright as the heart space is,

It also feels perfectly natural,

Like a dropping in or a quiet remembering.

There's no need for fanfare when you've finally found your eternal home.

There's only the question of how much you can drink of this golden elixir.

After a while,

You may find yourself growing satiated and feeling less and less of a need to rest by this oasis,

And more of a drive to share and create and express your light in the world.

Whatever that looks like is not up for judgment.

It's simply an opportunity to see more of this love out there in the world.

Yes,

The heart has a mind and a will too,

And it will guide you to actions that serve the whole,

But always starting with yourself.

The heart doesn't have an agenda of sacrifice or self-victimizing.

It really doesn't have an agenda at all.

Its love always starts with you,

To honoring and serving yourself first.

Anything less than that,

Any sense of obligation or having to save the world,

Is more ego,

More mind stuff.

So you come to see the momentous trade-off of staying in the heart,

Of keeping it open,

Is that you actually have to serve the one heart,

The place where your joy and well-being meets that of the whole.

Yes,

The love that you are will bring up anything unlike itself,

All unprocessed emotions,

Hang-ups,

And complexes,

But it will also transmute them if you give them over to this eternal flame.

You have to become your own spiritual authority and be willing to listen and act,

Listen and act,

Trusting that whatever direction you're moved in is ultimately the best direction for the whole.

This is the great alchemy spoken of in all esoteric texts,

That your will becomes the heart's will,

Or thy will.

You get everything you ever wanted,

An open,

Overflowing heart,

But there's no separate you to get it,

The truly remarkable paradox at the heart of life.

As we draw this meditation to a close,

I wish to offer you a blessing.

May you live with your heart wide open,

Knowing that there is no force outside of this infinite circle,

Whose center is everywhere,

But whose circumference is nowhere.

May you be well.

May you be at peace.

Namaste.
