Now,

The first thing I want you to do in this meditation is get those shoes and socks off.

I sometimes like to call them the foot prisons.

Let those feet free.

Now,

If you need time to do this or go somewhere that you can do this,

Press pause and then join us when you're ready.

Now,

With those feet nice and freed up,

Getting some good air,

I want you to place them flat on the ground.

Now,

For the rest of this meditation,

You can either sit in a chair with your feet on the ground or you can stay standing.

Both work.

First thing I want you to do is lift up the toes,

Spread them out nice and wide,

And then set them back on the earth.

As you do so,

You're going to increase that surface area with your feet and the floor.

And I want you to close your eyes and begin to bring attention to these feet.

I want you to imagine that these are your roots.

Take your focus to the feet and how they connect with the earth.

Notice all these points of contact,

The ball of the foot,

The heel of the foot,

The blades of the feet,

Maybe each one of the toes.

Bring some awareness to your breathing and now see if you can breathe in and out through your feet.

Each breath bringing some more awareness to these workhorses of your body.

And as you breathe in to the feet,

Just cultivating the energy from the ground,

But also this focus.

Now take that focus and put it all into the left baby toe.

Just notice how it feels,

How it's connected to the earth underneath it.

Maybe the temperature and then move one toe in,

What could be called,

I guess,

Your ring toe.

Same deal.

Notice how it feels,

How the ground feels underneath it and then the temperature.

Move on to the middle toe,

Noticing the awareness here.

Then on to your index toe and then your big toe.

Moving across now to the big toe on the right foot,

Noticing temperature,

Sensation,

Anything you want about that toe.

The next toe in,

Let's call it the index toe.

Now the middle toe,

The ring toe and lastly the pinky toe on the right foot.

And now imagine all of the feet,

Both feet,

Left and right,

Just feeling this connection with the earth.

See if you can imagine that your feet are projecting these deep roots into the ground and as they tap into the ground underneath you,

Can you begin to feel the energy that the earth possesses?

Can you feel the permanence,

The reliability,

The safety and security of the earth?

And as you tap into these qualities that the earth possesses,

Notice how these qualities make growth possible and that their absence makes growth impossible.

As the great Stoic Seneca reminds us,

A plant which is often moved can never grow strong.

So as you feel your feet attached to the ground,

Tapping into this energy,

Imagine this energy now rising up through your feet.

This feeling of permanence,

Reliability,

Safety and security now entering your feet,

Making its way up into your calves,

Now into your thighs and rising still into your hips.

So at this point you can feel that solid energy of the earth,

But this energy continues up,

Now into your abdomen,

All of your torso,

Down both arms,

Up your neck and into your head.

Now you're completely attached to the earth below you,

Like the trunk of a really strong tree,

Permanent,

Reliable,

Safe,

Secure.

As you breathe in and out,

Feel like you're breathing in this energy from the earth below you,

Continually topping up this feeling of security.

Each inhale drawing the earth energy up,

And each exhale feeling the solid nature of earth within you.

Breathe that earth energy up,

And as you exhale,

Feel that solidarity with the earth.

The strength of the earth now becomes your strength.

Each breath,

Feel it.

Each breath,

Let the earth give you its stability.

All right,

Good work.

Now that you've tapped into this infinite secure energy from the earth,

I want you now to tap into who you know you could be,

Who you know you could grow to be,

Your potential self that could emerge out of this secure,

Reliable,

Permanent energy.

You don't have to map it out,

You don't have to think about exactly how you'll do it,

Just begin to imagine this avatar of your future self.

You don't have to have exact details,

Just that feeling of agency,

Of self-belief,

Of the power you possess.

We all have this inkling of the person we could be,

But we don't always nourish it.

So take a moment here and nourish it.

Begin to feel your true nature buried inside of you,

The one you know is calling out,

The one you sometimes keep hidden.

Embrace that person with all the potential they possess.

And now fueled by the earth and the energy and the power it possesses,

Let each breath intensify this feeling of potential in you,

This hope for better,

This belief in yourself,

This excitement for the future.

Nicely done.

Now slowly thank the earth for this reminder,

For its energy and its power,

And begin to come back to the feeling in your feet,

That connection with the earth,

And then slowly lift up the toes and the feet as you disconnect from the ground,

But maintain those earth-like qualities — permanence,

Reliability,

Safety,

And security — and let those traits power that excitement for your future.

Slowly come back into the room and open those eyes.

Namaste.

You'll find it under my course section,

And it's the five lessons I've learned from watching nature and how you can apply them into your life to make this the best year you've ever had.
