Perfectionism And Self Worth: A Guided Journey To Self Compassion

With Kate Hickmore

This course guides you through the subtle patterns that link perfectionism with self worth. You'll explore the inner critic, the habits that make rest and imperfection feel uncomfortable, and the ways perfectionism can show up in work, relationships and everyday life. Through guided reflective exercises, micro-practices, and moments of pause you will learn to: Observe critical thoughts without judgement. Develop self kindness and compassion. Reconnect with intrinsic worth independent of achievement. Create space for rest, creativity, and authentic engagement. Recognise perfectionist patterns and respond consciously. By the end of the course, you'll be able to notice the inner critic without being controlled by it, respond to yourself with gentle awareness, and carry a greater sense of confidence, calm, and self worth into daily life. Who this course is for: This course is suitable for anyone who struggles with perfectionism, self judgement, or tying self worth to achievement. It is particularly helpful for those who are motivated to cultivate self compassion and awareness of sub conscious patterns. Prerequisites: No prior meditation or therapy experience is required. The course encourages reflective practice and gentle self observation. Listeners should be open to introspection and willing to engage in short exercises of journaling if they wish.

Lesson 1

The Hidden Toll Of Perfectionism, When 'Not Good Enough' Becomes A Way Of Life

Perfectionism often begins as a way to cope, protect or achieve. Over time it can take root so deeply that you scarcely notice how much of your energy is spent trying to avoid mistakes or criticism. This session explores the emotional cost of perfectionism and how early patterns shape the standards you hold yourself to now. You'll be guided to reflect gently on where these patterns come from and how you might begin loosening their hold.

Lesson 2

The Origin Of The Inner Critic, How Perfectionism Takes Root

Behind perfectionism lies an inner critic that can sound authoritative, urgent, or familiar. Many people carry this voice without realising it began as a result of earlier experiences, shaped by expectations, fear of disapproval, or the need to maintain safety. This session helps you explore how your inner critic developed and why it persists through a lens of curiosity rather than blame. By understanding its origins, you begin to loosen its influence and build a more compassionate internal dialogue.

Lesson 3

When Achievement Becomes Armour, Perfectionism And The Fear Of Vulnerability

Perfectionism often hides a deeper fear of being seen as imperfect, unprepared, or emotionally exposed. Achievement can become a kind of armour, protecting you from the discomfort of vulnerability while quietly exhausting you. In this session, you'll explore how achievement-driven patterns develop and what it means to gradually loosen the need to appear strong, capable, and in control. Through gentle reflection, you'll begin to understand how vulnerability can coexist with competence, and why allowing yourself to be human is essential for sustainable wellbeing.

Lesson 4

The Cost Of Constant Control, How Perfectionism Fuels Burnout

Perfectionism can create an unrelenting cycle of pressure, responsibility and emotional fatigue. When you feel compelled to manage everything, anticipate every outcome, and hold yourself to standards that never soften, burnout becomes almost inevitable. This session explores how control-based perfectionism affects the nervous system and leads to physical and emotional exhaustion. You'll learn to recognise the early signs of burnout and reflect on healthier, more sustainable ways of supporting yourself.

Lesson 5

Letting Go Of All-Or-Nothing Thinking, Creating Space For Flexibility

Perfectionism often operates through rigid beliefs: things must be ideal, correct, polished, or complete before they count. This all-or-nothing mindset can make even small tasks feel overwhelming, and it leaves little room for curiosity or flexibility. In is session, you'll explore how black and white thinking limits growth, blocks creativity, and reinforces the fear of failure. Through gentle awareness and guided reflection, you'll learn to soften the edges of perfectionism and experiment with more compassionate, flexible ways of thinking.

Lesson 6

Letting Go Of The 'Never Enough' Story

In this final session, we explore the belief that fuels perfectionism more than any other: the sense of never being enough. We look at how this story takes root, how it gets reinforced, and how you can begin releasing it through awareness, gentleness, and conscious choice. You'll be guided to reflect on what wholeness and self-worth mean without the pressure to constantly achieve. The session closes by helping you move forward with a kinder inner narrative.

Excellent advice and soothing voice, but I wish there were elements of silence to reflect and internalize or perhaps moments to journal as done in other classes on this site.
