In an article from the journal, Frontiers in Psychology, researchers found that breathing at a rate of 4 breaths per minute can improve sustained attention, affect, and cortisol levels, a hormone that impacts our stress (Ma, et al., 2017). Taking a pause like this to slow your breathing rate regulates and relaxes your body. It works by distracting your mind as you follow the musical cues, calming your nervous system, and bringing you into the present moment. This meditation provides an original musical composition that gradually slows the tempo/breathing rate with some initial guidance from me to get us started. Find a comfortable position, relax your shoulders, and take a deep breath. Let's begin.

Hi my name is Allison and thank you for joining me for this meditation.

Now those of you who have done the 5.

5 breaths per minute meditation,

This one is really similar but we are going to start at six and a half breaths per minute,

Which is the tempo of the music right now,

And then we're going to gradually slow down to four breaths per minute by the end.

The tempo of the music is going to guide us by naturally and gradually slowing over the course of about ten minutes.

And at the end of this practice I'm not going to speak or ring a bell in case you're using this for sleep or you just like to end your practice in silent stillness.

Instead you'll hear the music come to a natural resolution and final chord.

So let's get started by lowering our shoulders,

Releasing tension in our forehead between our eyebrows,

Relaxing our jaw,

And taking a nice deep breath in through the nose,

And out through the nose.

Nice.

Now you may have noticed the music is in three-four time or it feels like a waltz because it goes one,

Two,

Three,

One,

Two,

Three,

One,

Two,

Three.

So we will inhale for the first six counts and then exhale for the next six counts like this.

Breathe in,

Two,

Three,

One,

Two,

Three,

And out,

Two,

Three,

One,

Two,

Three.

In through your nose,

And out through your nose,

In,

I'm going to let the music guide us now through to the end.

So continue to breathe in and out through your nose,

Relaxing into your seat,

Giving yourself a sweet break.

You
