This Dzogchen-flavored refuge practice, based on the instructions from Tsoknyi Rinpoche, helps us to connect to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as sources of safe direction in our life. Having entrusted ourselves to these Three Jewels, we then practice the inner level of refuge by performing a practice to purify our body, speech, and mind. The meditation concludes with resting in non-referential clarity, bringing us closer to our ultimate spacious nature.

To begin this practice,

We allow our awareness to descend into the space of the body and perform a brief body scan,

Letting go of all the unnecessary tension and finding a state of stillness,

Ease and stability.

We bring our awareness to our feet and toes,

Releasing tension and noticing the sensations there.

Then to our pelvic floor,

To our shoulders,

To our hands and fingers,

And finally to our face.

We then allow our breath to move naturally,

Without any control from our side.

And we then establish a powerful motivation for this practice,

Orienting its energy and our own effort towards the goal of full awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings,

Towards fully uncovering our potential so that we can benefit all who live.

And then,

Relying on the luminosity or the clarity of our mind,

In the sky in front we imagine a beautiful,

Fresh and fragrant lotus flower with eight petals.

On this,

On the cushions of sun and moon,

Sits Bodhisattva Yamuna,

The historical Buddha in his golden shining form,

Inseparable from all the lineage and root teachers.

His body is radiant like gold and radiates the quality of peace.

His left hand is in the gesture of meditative equipoise and holds an alms bowl.

His right hand is in the earth-touching mudra.

He is smiling at us and all sentient beings with infinite wisdom and compassion,

Gazing at all of us with a love that a mother has for her only child.

We then bring to mind Buddha's qualities of enlightened body,

Speech and mind,

And also his fully realized qualities of wisdom,

Compassion and power.

For this we form the following resolve.

From now until complete enlightenment,

I will rely upon you.

I take refuge in you until my view,

Meditation and conduct are equal to yours.

Activating Buddha's rainbow-like form,

Transparent and insubstantial,

We also generate the following thought of entrusting ourselves to his guidance.

From now until attaining supreme enlightenment,

I accept you as my teacher,

My guide.

I will put the words you have spoken,

The Dharma,

Into practice.

And I will take the two levels of truth,

Conventional and ultimate,

As my path.

Until the ultimate truth is fully realized,

We are taking refuge in the Dharma and,

Similarly,

In those who follow in the footsteps of the Buddha,

The hearers,

The solitary Realizers and the Bodhisattvas,

Taking them as our companions on the path,

As our Sangha.

We then see that infinite rays of light stream from the Buddha's body,

Dissolving into us and purifying obscurations and all the negative karma.

Seeing that,

We imagine and feel that we have realized the Vajra body.

Then,

From the throat of the Buddha,

Rays of light shine forth,

Dissolving in our own throat.

This purifies all the obscurations and all the negative karma related to speech.

We imagine and feel that we have realized Vajra speech.

Next,

There's a descent of rays from the Buddha's heart,

And they dissolve into our own heart.

These rays purify all the destructive mental states,

Such as ill-will,

Wrong views,

Neurotic desire,

Ignorance and dullness.

They also help us develop and perfect all the qualities of the Enlightened Mind,

Including the knowledge of the true nature of things and knowledge of all the existing phenomena.

The Buddha then melts into light and merges indivisibly with us.

His body,

Speech and mind,

And our body,

Speech and mind,

Are of one taste.

Without following any thoughts,

Letting go of all concepts,

We just remain in a state of open purity.

We're not focusing on anything,

But also not allowing our attention to wander.

Following the instruction of Patrul Rinpoche,

Nothing whatsoever,

Totally disengaged,

Disengaged yet utterly open.

Finally emerging from this state,

We dedicate the energy of this refuge practice to the attainment of full awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings.

And then we conclude the meditation.
