A short concentration practice (shamatha) focused on our breathing as tactile waves spreading throughout the body with each in-breath and out-breath. Seeking to establish attentional balance (between excitation and laxity), we are allowing these waves to soothe our body and mind.

This is a very short practice of concentration meditation,

Or shamatha,

Focused on the waves of our breathing.

To begin the practice,

We assume a comfortable stationary position and simply relax into it.

We remind ourselves of our constructive motivation for our practice,

Whatever it is that we want to cultivate and eventually achieve,

And reaffirm that intention.

And then we proceed to a gradual relaxation,

Bringing our awareness to our feet and toes,

Our pelvic floor,

Our hands and fingers,

Our shoulders,

And our face.

Our body is stable and naturally relaxed,

And our breath is moving without any interference from our side.

Our job is to simply attend to all the sensations that change with each in-breath and out-breath throughout our body.

The tactile waves of breathing,

So to say.

We attend to these sensations to cultivate our attentional balance and to allow these waves to soothe and heal us.

Attending to the tactile changes associated with the breath,

We allow our awareness to merge with these waves.

When thoughts,

Images,

Desires,

Or memories come,

We release them into the waves and maintain mindful awareness of the breath.

Our body is still and our awareness is experiencing the tactile waves of breathing.

Coming back to them every time we get lost,

And refreshing our interest in them every time we notice laxity and dullness.

Before concluding this mindful break,

We expand our awareness throughout the body.

Thinking of all the positive effort we have just made,

We mentally dedicate it to our highest aspirations and to greater clarity and happiness for ourselves and all other beings.

May all the beings be happy and free from suffering.
