So today's practice is just an opportunity for you to take a moment out to listen to your body.
Perhaps you've been sitting at your desk for quite a long time now without moving.
You may not have noticed the tension in your body from sitting for such a long time.
So here's an invitation to pause,
A chance for you to just reconnect to your body and find a place of comfort.
So all you need to do now is sit at your desk.
You don't even have to move,
Although once you've finished this practice,
Moving might be what makes sense.
So just feel your feet on the floor now.
Feel the soles of your feet touching the ground and take one deep breath.
Perhaps now there's an inclination to close your eye.
It's up to you though,
You don't have to do that.
And now as you feel the feet against the ground,
Just allow yourself to feel a calming sensation moving up through your feet and into your legs.
Notice the front and the back of your calves,
Your shins.
Notice if there's any tension there and maybe just breathe and let it go.
Just notice now your thighs,
Perhaps feeling heavy against the chair.
Noticing the front of your upper leg and the back.
And again,
If there's any tension there,
Just let it go.
And now feeling your buttocks against the chair.
Notice what that feels like.
Now we're going to focus on your stomach and back.
This really is a place where the pockets of tension can build up.
So just notice your spine,
Work your attention all the way up your spine.
Maybe again,
Just take a breath.
This is just a few moments for you to pause,
Knowing that no one needs you right now.
You've got this opportunity,
You can take this time.
Now just notice your attention moving up your spine.
Maybe now moving up the front of your body from your stomach all the way up to your neck.
Maybe it makes sense to move a little,
That's fine too.
And now just notice your shoulders.
Again,
A place where a little tension can be held.
Maybe you can shrug your shoulders or move them about,
That's up to you,
But just notice how they're feeling.
Maybe a little tension there,
Just let it go.
And then feel that relaxing feeling,
Just going down your arms all the way to the tips of your fingers.
Maybe you're holding your hands in some tight position,
You can let that go now.
And maybe take another breath.
Now the neck,
Sometimes it will make sense now to move your neck,
It'll be different every time.
Every time you come back to this practice,
Something different might occur to you.
And now notice your head,
Especially around your eyes.
Is there any tension there?
Any tension in your scalp?
Just breathe a deep breath and let that go.
And now you've scanned all the way from your feet to your head.
I just want you to,
In your own time,
Just work your way back down again quickly,
Noticing right from the top of the head,
All the way down through the head,
Into the eyes,
Noticing the neck and the torso and the arms.
Just again,
Giving your body another chance to let go.
Into the buttocks,
The hips,
Down into the thighs,
The lower leg,
Ankles and feet,
Right back down to the soles of the feet.
And now just one simple question,
A question to your body,
Not to your busy mind,
Which hopefully is a little quieter now,
A question to your body.
What do I need right now?
Now notice the answer.
Gently bring yourself back into conscious awareness.
What did your body want you to do?
What's next?
Is it time to get up,
To move around,
Go for a walk?
Notice the thoughts that come in that say,
No,
You haven't got time for that,
To be busy.
And then maybe do what your body asks you to do.
And remember that you can come back to this practice time and time again.
Whenever you just realize you've been sat there at your desk a little too long,
Take that break,
Reconnect to your body and listen to what it tells you to do next.
It's really,
Really that simple.
