This short and powerful practice utilizes the Hindu 'Neti Neti' approach as the method for realizing and experiencing one's true essence as pure consciousness. 'Neti Neti' is a Sanskrit term translated as "I Am Not This, I Am Not That" it is a profound Vedic technique in which the seeker comes to understand that everything that can be observed or perceived cannot be one's true nature, as everything perceived must have a perceiver and what is observed cannot be the observer. In essence, understanding what You Are by understanding what You Are Not. Beginning with the external senses, we find it easy to realize that we are not the objects we perceive in the external world, but by deepening this practice, we apply the same 'Neti Neti' approach to the internal world, and a remarkably powerful shift occurs, and the true self is experienced.

Begin the process of disengaging from all of the objects within perception.

Everything that you can perceive,

You can observe,

Or you are aware of,

Are things that appear within your conscious awareness,

But they are not you.

They are simply things that you are aware of.

Beginning with the visual field.

All of the objects that you can see.

You can perceive these things,

You are aware of these things,

But they are not you.

Open your awareness to all of the things that you can hear.

You are aware of these sounds,

You can observe and perceive these sounds within awareness,

But they are not you.

The taste in your mouth,

This is a sense that you are receiving,

But the taste is not you.

The scent that you can smell,

Another sense that you are receiving,

You are aware of the scent,

You can observe the scent,

But it is not you.

The temperature on your skin,

You are aware of it,

But it is not you.

The sensations inside the body,

You perceive them,

You are aware of them,

You are observing them,

But they are not you.

The current thought that you are having,

Just observe it,

Be aware of it.

You are aware of the current thought,

But this thought is not you.

You are aware of all thoughts that arise in the field of awareness,

But not a single thought is actually you.

The memories that arise in the mind,

You observe these,

But they are not you.

All of your thoughts about the future,

Your projections and imagination,

You can observe these,

They arise within the present moment,

But they are not you.

Your name,

Age,

Height,

Weight,

Job,

Relationships,

Situations,

Circumstance,

You are aware of all of these things,

You observe them as they unfold.

But they are not you.

The awareness that is aware of all of these objects appearing within awareness,

Can you perceive this?

Are you aware of this?

Do you receive the awareness,

Or are you the awareness?

To find that which you are,

Simply remove that which you are not.

Not this,

Not this,

Not this.
