Beyond The Realm Of Right And Wrong
by Ekta Bathija
Ektaji explains the 3 Gunas (qualities) - Rajas (activity), Tamas (dullness), and Sattva (balance) and their influence on the entire universe, including us. These three gunas lead to three kinds of intellect - Tamasic (constantly negative), Rajasic (constantly doing and wanting/desires), and Sattvic (balanced-view of the One-consciousness in everyone and everything).

Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām This entire creation runs on three principles.
There is nothing else that can run this creation besides these three.
Rajas,
Tamas and Satva.
This entire creation is created on these three.
Science today has acknowledged this fact.
A scientist came to Guruji recently and he said he had a three blade fan and he rotated it.
He said this can go on till infinity.
This proves that everything in this creation is based on something that is three.
But I have not been able to go ahead in my research.
Guruji says,
Oh it is already there in the Bhagavad Gita.
Lord Krishna says it is Rajas,
Tamas and Satva.
Everything in this creation is Rajas,
Tamas and Satva.
Whether it is an ant,
An insect,
A living object or a non-living object.
It doesn't matter.
It has these three aspects.
Rajas,
Tamas and Satva.
So let's understand what is Rajas,
Tamas and Satva.
Do you know what is Tamas?
For us humans,
Dullness,
Laziness and that is just at the body level,
At the mind level.
What is Tamas?
What will be equivalent to dullness and lethargy in the body?
Sad thoughts.
Negativity in the mind.
That is Tamas.
Now you are talking only about us.
What about this creation?
Talk about Tamas here in this creation.
Negative energy.
Not necessary negative energy.
Low energy,
Low prana.
Night time.
Yes,
It is required no?
Can you go without night?
Is it possible?
No.
So it is required.
Tamas has a proportion which is good also.
Yes,
Rest,
Relaxation.
When this goes to an extreme what does it become?
Dullness and lethargy.
Yes,
That is at the physical level.
Mental level.
It is required a little bit of rest,
Relaxation to the mind is important.
But when this goes to the negative side it becomes negativity in the mind,
Dullness in the mind.
Not being able to do anything,
Not being able to focus.
Do you understand Tamas now?
So in the creation,
In seasons also there is Tamas.
Which season?
Winter.
Winter is Tamas.
Are you getting it?
Yes,
So everything,
Anything you pick up you will find Rajas Tamas.
So Tamas is clear?
What is Rajas?
Restlessness.
When you want to do too much activity all the time you are totally high energy.
Yes,
High energy is good but what happens on the negative side of high energy?
Anxiety.
Anxiety,
Obsession,
Feverishness to get something.
Yes,
Feverishness to complete something.
Feverishness to do something.
Yes,
And that feverishness messes up everything.
Have you noticed?
So this can happen at the body level also.
Sugar is too high,
You just can't sleep.
Running up and down,
Up and down.
And at the mental level too many thoughts.
All the time mind is going on and on and on and on.
This is Rajas.
Clear?
Rajas in the environment tell me?
Sambar and Deyton.
But there is a balance to the creation also.
The creation was not always created in opposites,
Both extremes.
There is a balance.
And what is that balance called?
Satva.
Satva is the perfect balance.
Neither tilting to this side nor to that side.
A perfect balance,
Not just in the body.
When you are feeling calm,
Relaxed,
Everything is fine in the body.
You are feeling healthy.
That is the sattvic state of the physical level.
At the mental level,
Not dull but not so high energy that you are feverish.
There is a equanimous mind.
That's sattva.
Are you getting this?
So everything in this universe is based on these three principles.
Now we come to the main topic.
So if everything is based on these three principles,
My personality has also formed from one of the three.
Now when we talk about these three types,
You do a little self contemplation.
Where do I follow?
So your personality is because of your intellect tending to one of the sides.
There are three types of intellect.
Tamasic intellect will be how?
Lizzie.
Lizzie,
Yes,
In the body.
And how will the intellect of a tamasic person function?
Negative all the time looking for negativity.
Oh she is like this.
Oh he is horrible.
This one is the worst.
Everything is bad.
My life is nonsense.
Everything and everybody is bad.
Blah blah blah.
Everything is negative for that person.
Have you seen such people?
Whatever you do,
Whatever you say,
That person would not budge.
And sometimes you also fall into that kind of a situation.
So observe.
Are you tending towards tamasic?
You don't have to tell me.
It's for your self introspection.
The second type is Rajasic.
How is Rajasic?
Always on the go.
Always on the go.
Doing things,
Running here,
Running there,
Wanting a lot.
Have you seen such people?
Desirous mind.
I want to achieve this also.
I want to achieve that also.
I want to do this also.
I want to do that also.
Lots of desires in the mind is a Rajasic intellect.
And such a person also analyses things like that only.
Oh,
If I get this from this person,
Then I'm going to do this.
Very business like.
You check.
Have I become like that to a little self introspection?
Am I moving towards the Rajasic intellect?
And the perfect balance of both is?
Satvik means what?
This satvik intellect doesn't look at,
Oh,
He is like this or she is like this or he said this,
She said this.
This satvik intellect sees that one Brahman consciousness in everybody and everything.
That one consciousness,
That one divinity that we are all made up of.
It's like in an ocean there might be different different fish,
Shark,
Seahorses,
Seals,
All kinds of different animals.
There will be different kinds of plants,
There will be different kinds of corals,
But they are all in the same ocean.
They are part of the same ocean.
They arise from it and they die of it and they dissolve in it.
Just like that,
We are all in one ocean of prana or consciousness.
We have all come up in that and one day we are all going to die there only.
There is nothing outside this.
A satvik intellect doesn't get lost in this fish and that shark and this one said this and that one said that.
A satvik intellect is the one that sees the oneness in all and drops,
Lets go.
It's okay.
Let go of negativity,
Let go of comparison,
Let go of feverishness to achieve something.
What do you want to achieve?
How much will you achieve?
Will your mind ever be satisfied,
Tell me?
It's a bottomless pot.
Have you seen a pot which doesn't have a bottom?
How much ever you put into it,
Will it ever fill up?
Your mind is a bottomless pot.
It's never going to be satiated.
So if you are looking for that day,
One day I will get satisfied by doing this or getting that.
Forget about it,
It's not happening.
So wake up to this.
Where am I stuck?
Am I rajasic,
Am I tamasic or am I satvik?
Have I moved on to sattva?
If I have not,
Then let me start walking the path of knowledge.
Enough we have done in the material world.
There is some attention we have to give to ourselves.
Start looking within.
And that is what a sattvic intellect is.
Is it possible that the body is tamasic and mind is rajasic?
Yes,
A combination of the two can exist.
So there are three gunas,
There are three dosas also.
That is vata,
Pitta and kapha.
So when vata,
Pitta,
Kapha proportion is higher,
They can also change the proportion of rajas,
Tamas,
Sattva.
It's a permutation and combination of these six that can show two effects in a particular person.
That's fine.
If you are those who have not done these vata,
Pitta,
Kapha and rajas,
Tamas,
Sattva,
We will do all this in Ashtavakra.
Those who have not started Ashtavakra,
Start soon.
What is your constant expose to the tamasic people?
Good question.
So you have the responsibility to maintain your sattva.
In the ocean there are going to be sharks.
You cannot say,
Oh I want to be away from the sharks.
They are going to be there.
There are going to be dolphins also.
One,
You check your company.
And work on it.
And company is not just externally which person I am with.
Company is the thought of what kind of a person is sitting here.
Don't let anybody sit here rent free.
He is not even thinking about you.
You waste an entire weekend thinking and sobbing and crying about what he did and she said.
So first of all,
Company.
Second,
You have to take corrective action if it's such a difficult kind of a person.
Tamasic people can be very difficult.
So I am not saying do not take action.
Take action but after that let go of that end result.
Oh he or she should listen to me.
Remember like you came with your karma,
He or she has come with his karma.
He must go through that phase that he or she is going through.
Let go.
Let go of this expectation that he or she should listen to me or do what I say.
From my side I do my best,
Correct a situation but then I let go.
I maintain my sattva.
Your sattva is not maintained from here.
Where is it maintained from?
Here.
Control switch is here,
Not here.
Yes.
The day you recognize the control switch is here and I start working from here,
Everything is perfect.
It doesn't matter what kind of people are here.
In order to move towards vairakya,
Don't you have to first take up suppression?
No.
If you suppress you will never be able to move towards vairakya.
So that's the thing,
If you have desires unless you suppress them,
How do you move towards them?
You played with your little dolls when you were young.
You changed their dresses,
You made food for them,
You were so attached to your dolls.
Are you that attached now?
Did you suppress it?
So I don't have to do anything,
It will just happen.
It will happen.
But how will it happen?
You keep walking the path.
Keep doing the knowledge.
That is the meaning of walking the path.
If you are not doing the knowledge,
It will not happen.
Not possible.
But then what abhyasa of letting go of this attachment in the mind where I keep saying,
Oh I want this,
I want this,
Without this I am going to die,
Without this.
Oh,
Let go,
Relax,
Calm down.
Letting go of the feverishness in the mind.
Having the strength to tell the mind it's okay,
Accept that I did not get this right now.
Or accept that I want that dress and that's okay.
Yeah,
And that's okay.
I am not going to die without that dress.
It might be $500,
I don't want to spend that right now.
And it doesn't make sense.
It's a silly little excuse,
Whatever.
Like how a little child goes to Wal-Mart with you,
No I want this truck now,
I am not leaving the store.
What do you do?
Do you always buy that truck or that Barbie doll?
What do you do?
You give him or her candy.
You divert the attention.
That's exactly how you have to train your mind.
You have to divert the attention.
You have to recognize that the mind is like a little child and I have to train it.
Yes?
You become stronger than this little child.
One day you will.
But the problem is that you have not started implementing it.
This is abhyasa.
Implementing this is abhyasa.
Yes,
Got it.
Good.
So is it something like,
Everything we are doing is involvement of thoughts.
So is there a state where there is just observation without.
.
.
Wow.
Yes,
There is a state which is called witnessing.
Just being a witness.
Yes,
Beyond the realm of the mind,
Beyond the realm of thoughts,
Beyond the realm of emotions where you just are.
That is the best situation to be.
But it's like you go in and out of it.
Yeah,
You must have experienced it.
Definitely everybody experiences it but has not found a strong foothold in it.
Because of not being on the spiritual path or not being in the spiritual knowledge.
Spiritual knowledge is not following an organization.
It's looking within.
That is the spiritual path.
We are always looking outside in the world.
Very few people look within.
When you start looking within,
You get a strong foothold in that.
That witness in consciousness is who you are.
Not the mind,
Not the body,
Not the intellect,
Not the memory,
Not the ego.
It's beyond that.
And knowledge takes you there.
And then Kriya helps you establish there.
And then knowledge hits you even more stronger into the ground.
And then Kriya hits you even stronger in the ground.
So they both are required for you to get a strong foothold.
And in the witnessing consciousness.
There is a very beautiful two liner by Rumi.
Have you heard that?
Beyond the realm of right and wrong.
Who says right and wrong?
Intellect.
Intellect is stuck in right and wrong.
Good,
Bad,
Happy,
Sad.
This should be like this,
This should not be like this.
Beyond the realm of right and wrong.
There is a place.
And I will meet you there.
Rumi was a poet.
He spoke these things only in poetry.
The ones who are smart got it.
That is Sakshi Bhava.
That is Sakshi Bhava.
The witnessing consciousness.
She just used the Sanskrit word for it.
Sakshi is witness.
That's it.
