Intuition What It Is And How To Tap Into It
This is an in-depth description of what intuition is and how to tap into it. There is a map one should know when it comes to tapping into intuition. Through a few stories of my life, I dive head first into how to make this jump into intuition. So grab a drink sit back and enjoy.

Welcome once again.
My name is Douglas Grumman.
I'll be your orator today.
So join me for a few moments and let's enjoy this new talk.
Today's talk is going to be about intuition and how it affects all of us and how we can tap into this thing called intuition.
Before we can tap into it,
We've got to of course know what it means.
The definition of tuition means something from the outside,
Like you're getting a tuition from a college or something like that.
But intuition,
When you put the I-N in front of tuition,
It means something is coming from the inside,
From the beyond.
So intuition goes beyond the explained.
It takes you out of intellect,
Which is what most people are coping with and surviving on.
They think that's the highest level and they've never tapped into this thing we call intuition.
So instinct is the first level.
Instinct kind of comes from our past,
And not in a bad way,
More like an animalistic way,
But not in the condemnation sense of the word.
So through our instinct,
We can function.
In fact,
Without instinct,
We wouldn't be able to live or cope or if it was up to our intellect to breathe or to circulate blood or any of the things that the body just does automatically out of instinct.
But this instinct has evolved over millions of years.
And whether we believe,
I would say,
In evolution or not,
Our species has made it to this point through instinct and not intellect.
Now intellect picks up,
And you can say that intellect is kind of like the bridge between instinct and intuition.
We need our minds,
And this is something that I specifically point out in almost every lecture that I give or every talk that I give,
Is that we have to have healthy bodies.
You have to be able to breathe right.
You have to be able to function normally.
You have to be healthy.
All these things have to work in your favor.
And when they're all working in your favor,
Then you can move on to the next thing.
Then you can start using the mind.
If the body is suffering,
Then you have to draw back and take care of the body.
You can't really function on other aspects in life in an intellectual sense because something is going wrong.
So what I've learned through the ages and through masters and reading,
And one of my favorite authors is Osho.
I read quite a bit of his work,
And I read a lot of Alan Watts and other people also.
But Osho says that the master is hidden behind these three,
The body,
Mind,
And the heart.
The master is hidden behind all of these three,
And that is your being.
But you never go inward because all your senses go outward.
Everything you know and realize in this life seems to be on the outside,
So you never go inside of search for anything.
And without going inside,
You'll never tap into intuition.
Without meditation,
You'll never tap into intuition.
So I say if and whenever you can,
Try to meditate often,
Especially in the beginning as a beginner meditator.
You need to be able to learn to shift between your body,
Your mind,
And your being.
And your being is your consciousness.
Your being is your is-ness.
It's the only thing that exists in the present moment when you still your mind.
You'll realize that you can still feel,
Sense,
You can still be conscious,
And have the mind be stilled.
And when you start tapping into that essence of meditation,
This essence of stillness,
When you can kind of like stop the mind from functioning,
Then intuition jumps in and takes over.
And intuition is a little bit faster than what the mind can perceive.
And scientists can't explain intuition.
And a lot of times they believe that because it's not rational,
Because you can't think about it,
Because it's beyond the mind,
They refuse to believe that it exists.
That maybe everything happens by pure coincidence.
I think one of the first times that I ever really experienced a mystical happening,
I mean there's been many that have happened to me down the ages,
And I'd love to share all of them with you,
But just to tap into the essence of what we're talking about intuition here is that back in 1998,
I took a trip to California by myself.
And it was an Aikido slash surfing trip.
So I was going to go to a seminar up in Oakland,
An Aikido seminar in Oakland,
And my plan was to fly into LA and drive up the PCH highway,
The Pacific Coast Highway,
That's a beautiful road beside the oceanfront,
Right off the cliffs and everything,
And beautiful views of the ocean and the cliffs,
And it's just amazing.
But anyway,
So I flew into LA,
Got a rental car and started driving up the coast and finding surf spots.
And every place that had waves that looked doable to me,
I had a longboard and a shortboard I took with me on the trip,
Was cool.
So I stopped at all these locations like Malibu,
Newport Beach,
Santa Barbara,
All these spots that had all these great surf spots that I've always wanted to surf,
That I'd heard about my whole life,
But I'm an East Coast guy,
So I never made the trek all the way across the country to ride California waves.
So I was very excited about this,
This was so great and new to me.
So anyway,
I'm driving up the coast,
Stopping here and stopping there and going surfing,
And as I drove up the coast,
The waves kept getting bigger and bigger.
And I felt like I was maybe training or preparing myself for something that I didn't know of,
Or didn't know why,
But it just worked out that way.
Because in Southern California,
There are big waves,
It can get quite big and quite fun down there too,
But this particular trip,
It just seemed like the more northward I went,
The more waves I was catching.
So I got up to the Aikido seminar on a Thursday night,
I flew in on Monday,
So I had like four days to drive up the coast and surf and have a good time.
And I met plenty of really cool people and saw some amazing things.
And I kept having these visions pop into my mind.
I've been meditating for a couple of years now,
And these flashes of scenery,
Of places I haven't seen before,
Buildings or structures and things like that.
So that was quite interesting that those things were happening.
So something was kicking in in me and guiding me along my journey up to Oakland.
But I got up to Oakland,
And I met Rick Rauru Sensei,
A great Aikido teacher in Oakland,
California.
And I studied Thursday and Friday with Rick and some friends.
One guy from my school in Houston,
The Aikido school I went to in Houston,
He was up there too.
So we kind of knew each other a little bit,
Not really great,
But we bonded much more on this trip.
And anyway,
I studied Aikido Thursday and Friday,
And I was having a great time.
I had no plans on doing anything else other than just finishing out the seminar here through the weekend,
And going back home and saying that was a beautiful trip.
But God had something else in store for me.
Because when Saturday morning came around,
I went to the dojo and I told the Sensei,
I don't know what this is,
But I'm being called to go to Santa Cruz.
And something inside of me says,
Hey,
You've got to go right now and get your butt to Santa Cruz.
And I didn't know why.
I thought I'd never been to Santa Cruz before.
So my journey at that point,
I said goodbye to all my friends at the seminar,
And drove back down the beach just a little bit.
It's about an hour drive,
I think,
South of Oakland to get back to Santa Cruz.
And when I got to Santa Cruz,
I checked into the hotel right on the beach.
And it was right on the cliffs that are barely hanging on now.
Back then there were these five huge trees that were on the cliff struggling to survive,
But they were these massive trees.
And it was just a beautiful place,
So I thought,
I'm going to stay here.
And I checked into the hotel and grabbed a board,
And there were waves everywhere.
I mean,
There's all these cliff lines with all these different breaks,
Three or four different breaks going out to what they call Steamer Lane.
There's a break called Cowles and a few others,
Middles and Seconds and then First,
And then there's all of Steamer Lane.
But anyway,
So,
I mean,
It was going off probably,
I want to say,
In the range on the shore break.
The shore breaks were about five to six feet.
I mean,
That's a shore break.
I mean,
It's pounding,
You know,
And there were short boarders riding those waves right up onto the shore,
Basically.
I mean,
It wasn't a very long ride.
But at that time,
I think I was about 32 years old.
And I was like,
Well,
I saw this break where some long boarders were right by the pier,
And I didn't know that this break didn't break very often,
But it was more of a longboard wave.
So I took my longboard out there and I rode there for a little bit and had a great time doing that.
And then I could see Steamer Lane from the distance,
And I'm like,
Oh,
Wow,
I want to surf that wave.
But I had no clue on how to get over there.
So from where I was surfing over by the pier,
I paddled all the way over to Steamer Lane.
It's like a mile,
Maybe long journey,
Maybe a little bit more than that,
But it was a long paddle,
And everybody's laughing at me,
And I'm like,
What,
What?
I didn't understand why these people were looking at me so strange.
But apparently,
I found this out once I got over there,
Is that there's steps on the cliffs.
They actually put concrete steps going down into the rocks,
Into the water,
So that you could get in and out of the water without having to do what I did and paddle all the way from the shore.
But anyway,
That's off the point.
The point is that something drew me to go there and experience that.
And because of that experience,
Surfing all day Saturday,
And then I think I woke up Sunday morning and surfed the morning session.
And then at that point,
I sat and did a meditation.
But I wasn't in any posture.
This meditation,
I just laid down in the lounge chair,
A reclining lounge chair,
Out in front of the hotel,
Right under these massive,
Beautiful trees.
And I just felt this moment,
This essence come over me.
It's like,
You know what?
Life is never going to get any better than this.
I mean,
This is so beautiful.
I mean,
I'm not getting any younger.
I don't care about any future.
I mean,
I just felt like for once in my life,
This was the pinnacle,
Like the peak experience of my life.
At that moment,
I became so relaxed and so in the present moment and so aware.
I just laid back and closed my eyes and went into meditation.
No postures,
No effort,
No nothing.
It's like the Chinese say,
Wu wei,
It's doing without doing.
So when that happened,
When I went into this meditation,
Then the most beautiful awakening experience happened to me that I could never really describe it all in words.
But let's just say it was very golden.
It was so honey-like.
Energy just filled me with love and honey and energy like electric honey.
I know that's kind of weird to describe,
But it filled every pore of my body.
It just totally saturated me with love and beauty and all this stuff.
So it was my first sense of real awakening.
It must have lasted probably maybe about five or ten minutes,
This session.
I won't go into detail about everything,
But intuition told me to get my butt down to Santa Cruz because God had something really special in store for me.
I'd never been on a solo surf trip that far away from home for that long.
It was amazingly beautiful.
That's just one of the things that has happened to me.
That was like 23 years ago now,
But so much more has happened to me since then.
I've learned to tap into this thing we call intuition.
I can go complete days without thinking.
I can just use my consciousness.
I can just go from that because I've learned to tap into it.
I've learned what this intuition is and how to tap into it.
So to help you understand how to dive into intuition,
You have to understand that there's the mind,
The body,
And the heart.
Three different things,
But they're all working in unison together to help us discover.
Intuition has more to do with the heart than it does anything else.
It's kind of like hidden behind the heart.
We have our heart chakras,
And that's the spiritual center.
It's the fourth chakra.
There's three below it and three above it.
When enough energy gets poured into the heart chakra,
Then you tap into this thing called an awakening.
You tap into this thing called enlightenment.
There are so many different names that people call it.
The Indians call it doiji,
Which means twice born.
The heart is where the secret is.
It's where we live in the present moment.
It's our spiritual body.
If you can trust yourself,
And that's the key thing,
Is to be able to just take that leap.
It's a jump to intuition.
Like I said,
Intellect is kind of the bridge,
And instinct is your past.
So you're jumping from your past into the present moment,
Which is intellect,
Into the future,
You could say,
Into the unknown.
Scientists basically say there's two categories.
There's the known and the unknown.
They keep evolving scientifically,
And what was unknown can become known.
But in the East,
They say there's a different category.
There's a third category,
And that's the unknowable.
That is the mystery of life.
That is the core essence of us humans,
Is that we can tap into this unknowable.
It could never be known.
I mean,
That's the mystery.
Science doesn't believe in the mystery because it can only go up to the bridge,
To the intellect.
Anything beyond it,
They can't tap into because it can't be rationalized.
You can understand the higher from the higher,
But you cannot understand the lower from the higher,
I should say.
But from the lower to the higher,
It doesn't work that way.
You have to take the jump.
You have to absorb yourself into trust,
Love,
Compassion,
And be like I was on that beach in California,
Just so absorbed in the present moment that you just tell yourself that life can't get any better than this.
You're going to have a pinnacle moment in your life,
And when that happens,
Then allow it to happen.
Just open up.
Be feminine.
Be receptive.
Allow these energies to come into you and help you dive into this thing we call intuition.
And over the years,
My intuition,
I don't know if it just tells me when to go surfing or what,
But I've been given the nickname the wave whisperer because every time I show up at the beach,
The waves get better.
That may have a little bit to do now with nowadays because we have predictive charts and we have computerized maps and scales that say when to go surfing,
When the best time to go surfing is.
And of course,
With your surfer knowledge,
Using your intellect,
You can read these maps,
And you can kind of formulate the best time to go out and enjoy the waves.
It has a lot to do with tides.
It has a lot to do with buoy readings,
And a lot of it is just intuition because a lot of people wake up and want Dawn Patrol because Dawn Patrol is a special thing.
It's a special moment because you don't think out there when you go out on Dawn Patrol.
It's not about surfing with your buddies.
It's not about ego trips or anything like that.
Dawn Patrol is a mystical thing where it's just you in existence out there,
And nobody talks.
If you're the guy that shows up and starts talking at Dawn Patrol,
People look at you all weird and everything.
It's like,
Who invited this guy?
But anyway,
Yeah,
So Dawn Patrol is special,
But it's not always the best time to go surfing.
Sometimes it's better to wait till the winds calm down or the tide goes up a little bit.
On the East Coast,
It's very tidal.
You have to surf kind of when the tide is lower.
The waves can be three or four foot,
But at high tide,
It's only like one foot.
It's so tidal.
Here in the Gulf of Mexico,
The tides can come up a couple feet,
But because the Gulf is so shallow for so long,
We get waves quite often,
Not the best quality waves,
But quite often.
But there's going to be times where you have to not listen to your mind and intellect.
Intellect may be telling you this and this and this.
Instinctively,
Your body knows,
Because your body has muscle memory,
And you learn to surf from this muscle memory.
If you don't surf for a while,
You lose what we call your sea legs.
Without sea legs,
It's very difficult to surf.
If you've been a month or two out of the water,
You have to ride a couple waves just to get your sea legs back.
But you have to listen to your intuition sometimes,
And your intuition will tell you when to go out surfing,
Where to go surfing,
What will be the most fun.
I mean,
So many different things can be going on.
Your favorite surf break on a good day might be really crowded.
And you can use your intuition to say,
Well,
Do I want to surf here,
Here,
Here,
Here,
Which would be best to surf,
And what would be the most fun.
Will I have the best session of my life here with my buddies,
Or would I be more like a soul session with one or two,
Or maybe just by myself surfing?
You never know.
And intuition one time sent me down to Matagorda.
Matagorda is about a two and a half hour drive from Houston,
But it's kind of this mystical place in Texas.
You don't think of much waves in Texas,
But even the good surfers,
When the storm's coming in and the conditions are just right,
Matagorda is like the deepest part of the ocean closest to shore in the Gulf Coast,
At least in Texas,
I should say.
So anyway,
So I didn't know,
This was before the days of wave forecasting,
But I just felt like going to Matagorda.
So I packed up board and packed my lunch and a few things,
Some waters and the essentials.
And Matagorda is kind of this cool thing because when you get down there,
There's a boat channel.
It's not a ship channel,
But it's pretty wide.
It's a pretty wide boat channel.
Probably,
I want to say,
50 yards across or something.
It's not super massive,
But you could choose whether to surf on the side that you drove up on.
And there's tons of waves there.
There's a long beach.
You can go up the beach a ways.
There's a place called Shell Banks.
If you have a four-wheel drive,
You can get up there.
And I won't tell too much about that because some people may not want me to be telling people about it.
But anyway,
So you could surf that side and back in those days,
Back in the 90s,
This must have happened probably,
I think it was before my California trip.
I'm not sure.
It may have been after.
Maybe it was after.
But it was around 98,
And I drove down by myself,
And it was a beautiful day.
It was a spring day.
And I got there,
And there were no waves on this side.
Now,
The other side of the boat channel,
Once you paddle across it on your surfboard,
And that was a little bit of a chore.
I didn't know at the time,
But there's alligators in that river.
But I think if I knew that back then,
I probably would have thought twice about it.
But anyway,
My intuition just told me,
Go ahead and cross the border.
I mean,
You've driven all this way.
There's no waves.
So I paddled across the river and the boat channel,
And you walk along this pipe,
This four-foot-round metal pipe.
It used to drain the boat channel so that it would be deep enough for the boats to come in and out of safely.
But anyway,
I walked down this pipe to where it ends,
And it pours sand back out into the water from the boat channel.
And it makes one of the only A-frame perfect waves in all of Texas.
And I was there by myself,
And the waves were probably a foot,
Not even that much,
I don't think.
Not much for waves,
But my intuition said,
Let's just sit on the water's edge and meditate.
So I did.
I sat down,
And I went into meditation,
Closed my eyes,
And just enjoyed the surroundings and the water,
The nice warm water underneath my feet.
And anyway,
So I meditated for 30 minutes,
And when I came out of this meditation,
This pod of dolphins swam up to me,
Right to where I was.
And there must have been 30 or 40 of them just kind of like staring at me.
And I mean,
Right at the water's edge.
I mean,
The water drops off pretty fast,
So they were able to get pretty close to me.
And I came out of the meditation.
It was about a 30-minute meditation,
I want to say.
But somehow I gathered up enough courage to get in the water and swim with them.
So I walked down into the water.
It was about waist deep,
Maybe a little bit deeper,
But about that deep.
And they didn't leave.
They weren't scared away.
They didn't go anywhere.
In fact,
What happened was the baby dolphins,
They were like little three-foot-long dolphins.
I'd never seen a baby dolphin that close before.
And the water was clear because there were no storms,
And you could see down into the water a little bit.
But they were brushing against my legs and playing,
You know,
Who could touch the human.
And Mama and Daddy dolphin,
Or porpoise,
They were sticking their heads up and just looking at me,
Making sure I was okay,
And that I wasn't going to hurt their babies or anything.
And then the teenagers started showing off right outside of me,
About 15 feet from the shore.
They started doing flips in the air and showing off.
And I mean,
You could tell they were teenagers because they weren't fully,
Fully grown.
They were probably in the five- to six-foot range.
But yeah,
This moment was special.
I didn't get to surf.
I drove all that way and didn't get to surf.
But I shared a moment with existence,
And my intuition is what guided me down there and put me in that situation because I have never had anything like that happen to me before,
That amazing.
And it was,
Like I said,
It's one of my favorite surf stories to tell to friends of mine.
It's like,
Wow,
No surf,
But wow.
But anyway,
That's what intuition gets you in life.
I love this that I read.
Intellect is not going to be your home.
It is a small instrument to be used only for passing from instinct to intuition.
So only the person who uses his intellect can go beyond it and can be called intelligent.
That's pretty beautiful.
So I hope you enjoyed this talk.
I want to let you know on Insight Timer that I am doing tarot card readings.
They're Zen tarot,
So it's a game of Zen.
It's a little bit different.
It's almost the same deck as they use in tarot cards,
But Osho's cards have their own flavor,
And it's all about Zen and how to grow spiritually and face obstacles that are in your life right now and how to tackle them from unknown sources,
From using intuition to trusting instinct to all kinds of things.
So if you follow me on Facebook,
I'm Douglas Grumman.
That's my Facebook name.
And I also have a YouTube channel,
And I'm recording all of these readings that I've been doing as well as making other videos for Facebook and YouTube.
I can make them live and then I record them,
So I've been doing a lot of that.
But just more that I can share with you through different venues and different paths,
You should say.
But definitely something I really enjoy doing.
And if you guys ever want a reading or something,
Just look me up on Facebook.
Send me a message,
And no matter where you are in the world,
I'll get back to you.
And what I do is I make the recording.
I use your energy and your question,
And I make a recording of the card layout and show you the cards and everything.
So I don't stack the deck in any way.
I shuffle it up pretty good,
And then a lot of times I'll ask you things like your age or give me a number between one and your age,
And we'll split the cards up right there.
So you have a say-so as to your energy into this reading.
I have no say-so whatsoever.
And so far it's been very magical and very experiential for me and the person I'm reading to.
So that's there and for your enjoyment.
And I guess aloha,
Mahalos to all you beautiful surfers out there,
And blue skies to all you skydivers.
Namaste to all you beautiful spiritual people.
Have a nice day.
Take care of yourselves.
Much love.
Bye.

A fresh seaside view of intuition.
