Welcome to this I Ching message for the year 2026.
This year arrives quietly like footsteps on soft earth.
The overarching guidance for us for this year is a hexagram 62 known as small achievements.
It is a time for careful steps,
Humble actions and attentive presence.
Like a bird flying low to the ground,
We stay close to what is real,
What is near and what is workable.
Small things matter this year.
Small gestures,
Small corrections,
Small acts of kindness or what is modest grows strong.
So take a breath,
Let your pace slow and even out.
Pay attention to the details and let your presence expand.
In relationships this may look like listening more than speaking.
In work this may look like refining rather than forcing and in healing it may mean more rest instead of pushing.
This guidance reminds us to be grounded,
To do what is needed,
Not less than,
Not more than,
Just enough.
So pause often,
Connect to the earth.
This is the rhythm of the year and by flowing with this rhythm there is success in small achievements and these small wins pave the way for bigger ones perhaps later in the year or in 2027 or even beyond.
The symbology here of the elements is the thunder above the mountain,
Also understood to be thunder beyond the hill.
So while thunder indicates changing times,
The steadfast presence of the mountain calls in sensitivity,
Humility and modesty.
The shape of the hexagram suggests a bird.
The action of the bird demonstrates the wisdom of humility.
It is sensible to descend to a handy branch rather than continue to soar into the attractive wild blue yonder says the I Ching.
And the text goes on to add persist in this new path of small achievements in the correct spirit of humility and virtue and you will gain noteworthy success.
These small changes that you modestly embark on will accrue disproportionately great rewards.
Let's pause here for a few moments just absorbing information and the frequency of this message.
And with a slow breath in,
A gentle breath out and grounding with the earth we now prepare ourselves to consider the first half of this year and for this we turn to hexagram 47 and its wise teachings of inner resilience,
Of conserving energy and of preserving spirit.
This hexagram is entitled exhaustion and refers to a source that has been exhausted where resources have been perhaps depleted and so it is important at this time to wisely choose not to leak vitality through heightened emotions.
Echoing the message from the overarching theme of the year from hexagram 62 we are called again to patience.
For patience here is an active patience,
For example active listening and to intentionally choose inner resilience.
This requires a strong spirit,
Graceful presence and a willingness to be with the self.
So during these first six months be mindful to keep your promises perhaps small or realistic but do keep them.
Rest before exhaustion demands and speak honestly while calmly.
So in this way we can protect and also nurture our resources for ourselves individually but also collectively and this is why patience can be such a good friend at this time.
The I Ching says you will have to rely on deep inner strength and a world determination to remain optimistic and cheerful no matter what.
The imagery here is of the elements of water.
The lake is in the upper trigram and water is in the lower trigram.
This is showing that what is essential has been drained away.
The lake representing delight and success,
Water representing danger or caution.
Together this can suggest a time of joy whilst facing adversity or perhaps needing to hold oneself back.
Take heart from the words of the I Ching that say for those who are firm and correct there will be good fortune.
And this firmness and correctness that the I Ching refers to is from the Taoist practice of Wu Wei.
The skill of being poised,
Knowing when to respond,
When to pause,
When to speak,
When to rest and this flow is experienced with ease and comfort and joy.
So there is little or no resistance,
An acceptance and an allowing.
So ask of yourself now where you can be more allowing and in flow with the practice of Wu Wei in your life.
Breathing in your awareness gently and then releasing it,
Making space for the next and final message for the second half of this year.
And here we turn to hexagram 56 known as the traveler and now we see the energy of newness arriving.
The traveler moves lightly,
Observes,
Learns and adapts.
In other words in the second half of 2026 we may encounter new environments,
New ideas,
Perhaps new versions of oneself.
We are invited to cultivate curiosity as well as courtesy because the traveler respects the customs of the land that they pass through.
Traveler remains alert,
Humble and open.
Once again the strength of presence and stillness is required along with creative exploration,
Perhaps reimagining something or the self in a fluid non-fixed manner.
The I Ching says there may be some attainment and progress if the stranger or traveler,
In other words the one who is new to a specific experience or situation,
So if this traveler be firm and correct as he ought to be there will be good fortune.
A selfless regard for those he meets as he passes is a worthy and admirable quality in a traveler.
His small kindnesses will have great reward.
The imagery is one of fire atop the mountain.
The mountain is immobile but the fire moves around in every direction,
Sometimes with no fixed aim and so it is through this imagery that we see the suggestion of the traveler,
In other words the fire who is the stranger in the strange mountainous land.
The trigrams move in opposing directions with fire burning upwards and the mountain grounding downwards.
This indicates that the contact between them may very well be of a temporary nature,
So these new ideas or experiences may simply be passing by.
The I Ching reminds us that even in temporary situations things can still be learned and progress can still be made.
Let's take a moment to exhale and just allow the way that your whole self is receiving this guidance right now.
Breathing in gently and exhaling downwards grounding into the earth.
As we gently recap these teachings from hexagram 62 our overall theme for this year reminds us to stay grounded and be patient.
The first half of the year from hexagram 47 teaches us to endure and persevere with integrity and self-reliance and as we move into the second half the year hexagram 56 invites us to welcome change without attachment.
Small steps,
Patient endurance and light-footed renewal.
May you be gentle,
May you be kind,
May you be graceful,
May you receive gentleness,
Kindness and grace.
And if you would like to explore the teachings of the I Ching a little bit deeper please have a look for the I Ching playlist that I have for you.
You can find this at the bottom of my profile page Helen Hansen.
I offer regular lives on the I Ching and there is also an I Ching divination course available for you.
So as you move through this year you may benefit from holding this little question in your hand and asking of yourself often what is the smallest most truthful step I can take today and then breathe and bow inwardly to your own wisdom which is with you always.
Go gently and be blessed.
