Seeing Through Core Beliefs: The End Of An Old Story

With Suryacitta (The Happy Buddha)

Many of the struggles we face in life are rooted in a handful of deeply held core beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. These beliefs often operate unnoticed, quietly shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. In this three-session course, we will explore how these old stories are created, how they are sustained, and most importantly, how to see through them. Through awareness and direct observation, it becomes possible to loosen their grip and discover a freedom that was never dependent upon them. What remains is a simpler, more natural way of being. What is offered here is not psychological analysis, but a gentle unravelling—a melting away of the beliefs that shape how we see ourselves and the world.

Meet your Teacher

Suryacitta has been practising Buddhism for over 30 years and is the author of five books on meditation, compassion and awareness. In recent years, however, he has moved beyond the institutions and complexities often associated with traditional approaches, pointing instead to something much simpler and more immediate: self-realisation as a possibility available to anyone willing to look directly at their own experience. What we are seeking is not something to attain in the future. It is not an idea, belief or concept — it is what is already here, what you are. Simple, direct, and without unnecessary complication. Suryacitta does not teach from notes or a script, and he prefers it that way. This allows him to respond in the moment, discovering fresh ways of expressing what is being shared and keeping the teaching alive, spontaneous and experiential. The trade-off is that you may occasionally hear a few more “umms” and “ahhs” along the way — a small price for authenticity and presence.

Lesson 1

Seeing Through The Lie - How Core Beliefs Create A Self That Isn’t Really There

We rarely question the thoughts we have taken to be true about ourselves and the world. A core belief can be nothing more than a repeated thought that has been mistaken for reality. Seeing it clearly means meeting the thought without arguing with it—simply letting it be seen as thought. When thought is met with silence and peace, the belief begins to lose its authority. There will be a little theory, some techniques and a meditation.

Lesson 2

Your Core Belief - Seeing It Isn't True

A core belief can feel like a fact simply because we have believed it for so long. But when we look closely, we discover it is only a thought we have mistaken for truth. You don’t need to fight it, change it, or replace it with a more positive belief. See it clearly: this is a thought, not the truth of who I am. There is a little theory, a meditation and exercises in this session.

Lesson 3

Meeting A Core Belief - In The Body Not The Mind

A core belief often stays hidden because we have learned to avoid feeling what lies underneath it. We may escape into overthinking, busyness, distraction, planning, or constant activity. These strategies keep the uncomfortable feeling at a distance, but they also keep the belief alive. When we stop running and become still, we can gently meet the feeling without trying to change it. In that simple meeting, the belief can be seen for what it is—and begin to lose its power. There will be a teaching and a meditation with pointers.
