This is part of my 30 Days of Journaling series — a gentle, 5-minute daily reflection to help you pause and reconnect. Each day can be listened to on its own; you don’t need to follow the series in order. Today, we explore the barriers that can hold us back from journaling, examining common obstacles and offering strategies to overcome them so you can fully engage in the reflective practice.

Hey,

Welcome to 30 days of journaling.

I am so excited that you're here.

My name is Rianna and I've been journaling on and off for the past two decades.

And no,

I'm not that perfect person who sits down every single night with a candlelit desk and a beautiful pen.

Sometimes I also go weeks without writing.

And then when I find my way back to it,

I can go for weeks in a row.

If you do have a steady daily practice,

I generally applaud you.

But for most of us,

It's just not how it works.

It's completely normal.

We're human.

Things happen.

Life happens.

And that's exactly why I created this 30 days of journaling.

It's not about being perfect.

It's about giving yourself a gentle container to return to yourself three minutes at a time.

Now before we're going to get started,

I want to call out some sneaky things that can keep you from even starting.

So let's first address the perfect journal trap.

If you can get yourself a journal,

Awesome.

But if not,

Please don't make it a big deal.

Honestly,

The times I bought a gorgeous new journal,

I never wrote in it.

And right now I'm in Nepal,

Writing in a cheap $1 notebook I grabbed at a corner shop.

And I've written more in this thing than I ever did in the pretty ones.

You know,

Sometimes the desire to do it perfectly holds us back.

Don't wait for perfect.

Grab whatever paper you've got and just begin.

Now,

Okay,

Let's be real for a second,

Because starting a journaling practice sounds simple.

But there are some other things that might stop you as well.

So I'm going to call them out so they cannot win.

The first one is,

I don't know what to write.

You sit down,

You open your notebook,

And your brain goes blank.

Guess what?

That's normal.

The point isn't to write something profound.

It is just to show up.

Even if all you write is,

I don't know what to write,

You're doing it.

That's journaling.

You've already broken through the wall.

So whenever you don't know what to write,

Literally write that.

Then the second block is perfectionism.

I said already a little bit about the journal.

But you know,

We tell ourselves,

If it's not beautiful or meaningful what I write,

Why bother?

Now,

Let me say this loud and clear,

Nobody is going to be grading you on this.

There's no gold star.

So messy handwriting,

Half sentences,

Misspelled words,

It's all fine.

Journaling is not about performing,

It's about getting honest with yourself.

And the third thing that I see a lot of times holding people back is time.

You might think,

I don't have 30 minutes to journal every day.

Great!

Because you don't need it.

A couple of minutes is enough.

You made time to press play today,

Which means you do have time.

Here's why I want you to really commit.

When you show up for yourself,

Even if it's just three minutes a day,

You start proving to yourself that you matter,

That your voice matters,

Your thoughts matter.

And over 30 days,

Those tiny pages and tiny sentences are going to add up.

They start to shift how you see yourself,

How you see your choices,

Your future.

Now I've arranged it with 30 words,

So it's kind of like stepping stones.

And if you follow them in order,

They'll gently take you from easy wins like gratitude and joy,

Through deeper reflections like forgiveness and boundaries,

And finally to big picture visioning.

But this isn't school,

You're not behind if you skip around.

Follow your curiosity.

If there's a word that jumps out at you,

Go for that one.

All right?

So take a deep breath right now and exhale.

And notice how even thinking about giving yourself this time feels different.

You know,

That's the power of this practice already beginning to work.

Are you ready?

Let's dive in together.

You're exactly where you need to be.
