Sometimes children can feel very powerless. Parents, teachers, and other adults seem to make all the rules and decisions which can leave children feeling no sense of autonomy, competency or efficacy. This can lead to power struggles, tantrums, and other outbursts of anger. Ruler of the Ocean breathing tool for kids will support them in remembering their power and simultaneously self-calming in times of struggle.

I'm Tracy Garcia and this is ruler of the ocean breath,

A breathing tool for kids for when they feel powerless.

Sometimes it can feel like you have no power.

Parents,

Teachers,

And other adults seem to make all the rules and the decisions for you.

When you do ruler of the ocean breath,

It can remind you that you are strong and you are powerful.

Start by sitting down in any comfortable position.

Now,

Either close your eyes or just let your eyes feel soft and the world might become hazy through them.

Imagine you're sitting on a beach.

The warm sand that you're sitting on feels soft,

Almost like powder.

The day is sunny.

You can feel the warmth of the sun on your skin like a sweet hug.

The sky is bright blue with white cotton candy clouds floating across it.

Maybe you can even smell the salt in the ocean air or the sweet scent of coconut.

You can hear seagulls calling as they soar in the distance,

Children laughing as they play in the sand.

And you can hear the calm rhythm of the waves as they roll onto the shore over and over and over.

Now,

Watch the waves and imagine that you are the powerful ruler of the ocean,

Able to control the rhythm of the waves with your own breath.

As you breathe in,

You pull the waves out from the ocean towards you onto the shore.

And as you breathe out,

You push the waves back into the deep,

Cool ocean.

Breathe slowly and deeply and guide the waves.

Breathe in,

Pull the wave towards you.

Breathe out,

Push it away.

Breathe in again and feel yourself dragging the wave towards you.

Breathe out and feel yourself pushing it back into the ocean.

Breathe in.

Wash the waves over the sand.

Breathe out,

Send it back home.

One more time,

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Now release your control over the waves and let your breathing return back to a rhythm that feels normal to you.

Feel yourself sitting on the ground and let the beach image fade away as you return to the space that you're in.

Open your eyes if they're closed.

Notice any change in how you feel.

Remember,

You can use this ruler of the ocean breath tool anytime you feel out of control and you want to remember your own power.

Thanks for practicing.
