Being broken-hearted, having an achy heart - these are experiences worth honoring. I invite you to make space for the ache in you so that together, we can listen to our wounds and adapt our day by taking care of that part of ourselves instead of ignoring it or wishing it away. What if making space for what aches is what sets you free?

Hello and welcome to this meditation.

It's called making space for heartache.

Sometimes we need to tuck in our heartache,

Cozy,

Sleeping inside each of us.

When we are in the thick of healing,

When heartache makes up most of our day to day,

Surrendering to its presence is often more freeing than trying to fight it.

But that doesn't feel natural at first.

We fight it.

We wrestle with its presence.

We wish it away.

When we fight it,

When we treat heartache and suffering as if they aren't meant to be here with us.

We are communicating with ourselves that pain is wrong and makes us flawed.

What we struggle to realize is that by allowing our heart to come undone,

It's because we've lived fully,

Loved fully,

Taken a chance,

Leaped across a chasm of the unknown,

And we've gained a heaping spoonful of knowledge,

Wisdom.

We've been so affected that we can no longer live how we've lived.

We may not see the pearls yet,

But they reveal themselves over time if we stay connected to our experience.

If we reject the experience of heartbreak though,

We'll never see them.

So laying down with your heartache,

Seeing it fully,

Tucking it in,

Allows us to be curious about it.

Allows us to let it be our temporary companion.

And it is temporary if you can learn to embrace it.

Treating it like it shouldn't be there makes us forget that we are wounded.

And when we forget,

We are in a more sensitive chapter of life.

We expose our wounds to the wrong people,

Places,

And things.

Deepening,

Widening the wound.

I wonder,

What if you're supposed to live a little differently when heartbreak is within you?

What if you're supposed to let it change you?

What if it's leading you away from what no longer serves you?

And what if it's walking you into a reality that lets you be more authentic,

Contented,

Whole?

If you knew this,

Would you be willing to sit with it?

What if the very pain you're avoiding is what sets you free?

So let's take some time,

Dear listener.

Let's allow your heartache to be seen and heard.

Don't allow the world to treat you like heartache is a blemish on your record.

Because it's the very people who never let the world move them,

That deal with the greatest suffering of all.

Disconnection from everything human and worldly.

Wherever you find yourself,

Try to get comfortable.

If it suits you,

Gently close your eyes or rest them softly at a distant gaze.

Imagine yourself seated across from your heartache.

Imagine looking into its eyes,

Sensing its pain,

Whatever intensity it is at this moment.

You're not here to change it or do anything else except for just be present for it.

Imagine these next few moments,

You're just here to breathe with your heartache.

With your next inhale,

Imagine you and your heartache taking a breath together,

Exhaling together for the next few moments.

Inhale,

Exhale while you're in each other's presence.

I invite you to reach out and put your hand gently on your heartache.

It might sting at first as you allow the pain to move like electricity from your heart to your awareness.

That's okay.

You're connecting.

If at times it feels too overwhelming,

Move your attention to the sensations of breathing and then return back to your heartache when you're ready.

If you find yourself still sitting with heartache,

Imagine saying hello.

Ask it.

How should I live today to take care of you?

What do you need?

How can I support you?

There's no need to try to answer these questions.

Just sit with them,

Allowing your heartache to feel cared for and seen by you.

And should answers come,

You just can let them float in and out without you clinging to or problem solving them.

Just notice that your heart is communicating with you.

From your hand that's reached out,

Imagine sending warmth through your fingertips to the center of your heartache.

Imagine that your heart is taking in your warmth with the next big inhale.

And continue to imagine your heart breathing in synchronicity with you for the next few moments.

It's also okay to label any feelings coming up.

Discomfort,

Difficulty,

Hesitancy,

Resistance,

Pain,

Confusion,

Woundedness.

As you notice them,

Imagine that they too are taking each inhale and exhale with you.

And you can imagine this for the next few moments if you need.

It is brave to sit with your heartache,

But any or no emotional upheaval during this exercise is normal.

We are here to make space for our heartache within us,

Big or small,

So that we may be in tune with how to care for ourselves today.

For the rest of today,

I want you to imagine that you've put your heartache gently in your pocket,

Gently tapping it,

Knowing it's there,

Allowing it to walk hand in hand with you today.

And when it comes to making decisions,

Consult it the same way you did today in this meditation.

How should I live today to take care of you?

What do you need?

How can I support you?

You can feel free to continue to sit across from your heartache if that's what you need.

Thank you for joining me today.
