Thoughts, emotions, and body sensations come into our awareness. Do we react? Or respond appropriately? If we hold non-judgmental awareness, we are given a choice between the two.  We have space; space between the experience and blind reaction.   Let's look at this in practice. Someone cuts you off in traffic; body tenses up, anger is felt. Thoughts of being wronged begin to surface. Now these happen all on their own. But let's stop right there…   If we are practicing non-judgmental awareness, not accepting or rejecting and just being aware of these thoughts, emotions and body sensations, eventually what do you think will happen?   Without any enhancing, without any fuel to keep them going… they subside.    Easier said than done?   Yes and no. For the stronger sensations yes, but we don't start there. We start training to stay present in the normal everyday moments, learning how to observe what is around us, and observe how the mind is constantly trying to add its commentary.

And let's practice a meditation today on non-reactivity.

And you can ease into your meditative posture,

Keeping your back nice and straight.

This meditation will help with the ease of sitting,

Whether on a chair or on a cushion.

Your self-permission to be in the moment.

That just for these few minutes,

You're going to give yourself permission just to be.

And so what we are practicing is allowing whatever is arising to arise and then leave it untouched,

Untouched by the mind,

Not allowing the mind to judge,

To enhance with any more commentary.

Allow the experience of being to be as it is.

So allowing that thought that comes by that says that it wants attention,

Urging you to engage with it.

Instead resting the mind in openness and just like a passing cloud,

Allowing that thought to arise,

To abide.

And then finally float through the awareness and subside once again.

The mind remaining open and free.

And if the body is experiencing some discomfort or maybe a little urge to shift position,

Before any adjustments are made,

Just looking,

Just investigating,

Noticing,

Does an adjustment need to be made right now?

Looking into the mind's tendency to want to judge and react right away.

The tendency for the body to want to shift,

The very moment discomfort arises.

So just being with this non-judgmental awareness for a few moments on your own.

Thank you.

To scratch an itch or not is good practice too, and is also a window into state of mind in any given moment. 🙏❤️

This is the third time I have listen to it. I am writing some things down. This definitely speaks to me and is going to make my life a lot easier by not engaging in additional commentary in my head! This definitely frees me to relax. This is enough time for me to try to react differently. Short session sometimes better. Thank you teacher And also the insight timer program itself!
