In this meditation, I introduce the use of a mantra to the meditation. A mantra is a sound or phrase which in this case is repeated silently as the object of attention during the meditation. This meditation is a common introduction to mantra meditation which uses the mantra So, Hum in combination with the inhale and exhale. The method of mantra meditation can help calm the mind if you find that your mind is often distracted by sounds or thoughts around you.

Welcome to this introduction to mantra meditation.

You might be wondering what a mantra is.

A mantra is simply a special sound or phrase used in meditation.

A positive affirmation can have a similar effect to a mantra,

Although the intention is different.

This mantra meditation is similar to the breath meditation,

Where we will introduce the mantra alongside the breath.

The mantra is not a sound that we speak with the voice in this meditation,

But rather a word or phrase that we focus the mind on silently.

This is most easily done by associating the mantra with the flow of the breath on the inhale and the exhale.

For this particular meditation,

You want to allow the breath to be just as it is.

Beginning to find a comfortable seat and closing your eyes,

You want to do a quick check of your posture to ensure you aren't putting any extra strain on your body.

Making sure the body is supported either by a chair or the couch or the floor when you're leaning up against the wall.

Ensuring the back is straight.

This will help the breath flow easier and reduce the likelihood of you falling asleep.

Once you're comfortable,

You may notice sounds going on around you or begin to have thoughts running through your awareness.

As the thoughts come and go,

Begin to focus on the natural flow of the breath.

The breath flowing in and nourishing the body on the inhale and releasing the tension on the exhale.

Taking a few breaths to help center the body in the seat.

Once you've found a comfortable rhythm for your breath,

Begin to invite the word so on the inhale and hum on the exhale.

Inhale thinking about the sound so and exhaling thinking about the sound hum.

So continue breathing this way with the mantra for the next few minutes.

If the mind becomes distracted with other thoughts or moves away from the breath,

On the next inhale begin back with the mantra so and continuing on.

I'll be here to bring you out of the meditation.

After you focused on your breath for a few minutes,

Releasing the mantra and beginning to awaken the body with the breath.

Being sure to give yourself enough time to readjust after the meditation and be sure to be careful as you get up.

Taking a minute or two to check in and reorient yourself with the surroundings before jumping back into the world.

Thank you.
