Freedom and Happiness When we learn the principles of eastern wisdom, we apply discernment that becomes dispassion. The highest dispassion leads to knowledge of real self, awakens to permanent happiness. We will learn from Yoga Sutra, Gita, and other texts together to discover the true nature. We will follow the four-step approach as taught and passed on to us by great masters of eastern wisdom. Learning the principles - I do not know, let me know it.

So my friends,

Welcome again to the session by a beer guy.

So we have been talking about the practice.

So in practice,

When we say practice in meditation,

So we understood it has two elements.

One is how to keep the mind in the state of steadiness.

And second is the dispassion.

So steadiness of the mind means I have to keep my mind on the fourth state.

Do you remember we have five subjective states of the mind?

Wandering,

Forgetfulness,

And distracted or obsessed.

Fourth one is one-pointedness means that mind which is constantly looking inside.

Sophie will never forget her honey.

John will never forget his honey.

So what makes you both not to forget your honey?

That is what the steadiness we are talking about.

We are not talking about focus and the mind is going somewhere and again you focus.

No,

We are not talking of that.

We are talking of that focus.

Which is?

Okay,

I don't know what's happening.

It's okay.

So we are talking of that focus which I just explained.

Now think of it.

Do you ever forget your house?

You forget your car?

Forget your honey?

So now can I hold on my mind inside all the time?

That is the practice.

That is known as a practice.

Second point is the dispassion.

Now the master says in the fifth sutra,

Fifth formula,

When you live into the highest state of dispassion means you maintain that mental state of dispassion.

What happens?

Can you imagine?

You live in meditation 24 by 7.

Then you need not to practice.

You need not to close your eyes.

You live,

You think,

You work in meditative state.

First we are understanding the principle and then I'll explain it.

So one point,

What is the one point?

Is that can I achieve that highest state of dispassion so that behind every thought,

Speech and action supported by a meditative state?

Clear?

Now we will go a little deeper in a simple way to understand what exactly is dispassion.

You feel bad about me and then I meet you,

I knock your door.

Now feeling bad behind the mind is present and you open the door and you see me.

You are already feeling bad about me.

What happens to your mind?

So that bad feeling is supported by your thoughts,

Speech and action.

Okay,

You have come,

Come.

You don't want to offer me a cup of tea then you ask,

Oh,

Would you like to take a cup of tea?

You see,

We do it.

So I'm understanding,

I'm making you understand when the state of dispassion is behind every thought,

Speech and action,

You live,

You work in meditation.

I'm not talking of any God,

Religion,

Image,

Dogma,

Belief,

Cult.

See,

That is what this master Patanjali wrote this text 2,

600 years back.

It is all about your perception.

Your perception is your knowledge,

Your knowledge is your awareness.

You can say it awareness,

You can say it knowledge,

You can say it your experience.

Now look at the perception.

A child looks at diamond necklace and plays with it.

For the child,

Perception is that this is a toy,

Let me play it.

What about his mother?

No,

No,

No,

Don't touch this.

You need not to play with this.

This is a diamond necklace.

This cost $10,

000.

So her perception of the same object is different that of the child,

Right?

Both have the utility.

Child also sees the utility of that diamond necklace and the mother also sees the utility of a diamond necklace.

Clear?

Child is also attached to play with this.

Mother is also attached to wear it in a society and a function.

Even if the necklace hides,

I just want to show it.

So someone should ask.

Utility,

Right?

Both have the perception,

Different perception.

We have more women here so I should have given another example instead of a diamond necklace.

Anyhow,

So now,

Now,

Now a dweller.

What is the perception of a dweller?

Dweller has no utility at all.

Dweller says,

Okay,

Let me see,

Check the diamond.

Oh yes,

This cost $10,

000.

He remains unattached.

He is neither attached nor detached.

Are you clear?

For him,

It is not a utility.

For him,

He knows diamond,

Not for play,

Not for neck,

Just a cost of it.

Clear?

When I'm not attached,

When I'm not detached,

When I don't,

I have no liking and disliking for anything in this world of objects and people and things,

Then what happens?

Then you are in the state of dispassion.

Any thought comes into your mind?

Good bad,

High low?

Any past impression enters into your mind?

You are in the state of dispassion.

What happens?

The knowledge of the reality dawns into your mind and you live into the state of meditation here and now before entering,

Before doing the practice.

This is what the master is saying.

The master is saying,

Tat param purush kya tahi,

Go no vyatrasyanam.

Sanskrit phrase means when you live into the highest state of dispassion,

Then you are in the state of meditation.

How the dispassion comes?

By viveka,

By discernment.

We have covered that topic.

Discernment and what is viveka?

Separating in your mind what is real,

What is not real.

Are you getting it?

Are you getting it?

Separating real from unreal in your mind.

How to do that?

How does the viveka start?

It starts with first awareness of an object followed by a thinking in a right manner.

What is right manner?

I should understand what is real and what is unreal.

I have covered that topic but again for the sake of understanding let me repeat it again.

So real means essential properties of an object or a thing.

Second point,

It is never changing.

It is not affected by past,

Present and the future.

It cannot be seen by the sense organs and the mind.

That is what the real is and what is unreal?

That is constantly changing.

That is affected by the time.

What is my real nature?

That is all pervading.

That never changes.

That never changes and that which is changing.

So you see the process.

Dispassion comes by viveka.

Viveka comes by contemplation and reflection on what is real and what is unreal.

The definition of real that it is not affected by the space,

Time and causation.

Unreal is always affected.

So what is affected?

Body is affected?

Yes,

I am not the body.

Your own breath,

Yes,

Mind,

Yes,

Intellect,

Yes,

Ego,

Yes.

What is not affected?

That is behind the mind.

For a non-meditator,

Yeah,

For a non-meditator,

That non-meditator is constantly subjected by the change.

Behind the mind,

He has all the past impressions that is influencing,

Dictating,

Guiding his life.

For the highest level of dispassion,

A seeker behind every thought and speech and action,

It is the dispassion that is influencing that leads to the right perception of the world outside.

So he lives in the meditative state and from that meditative state,

His thought,

His speech,

His action is guided.

Then what happens?

He lives in peace.

Feeling bad is not there,

Feeling good is not there,

Appreciation is not there,

Criticism is not there,

Hatred is not there,

Jealousy is not there,

Which is dictating.

Normally they dictate our life.

No,

No,

I like you.

I don't like that guy,

You know,

But anyhow,

Now he has come.

That is the way the meditator lives his life.

Non-meditator,

That is why the non-meditator always suffers because the mind and the ego is ruling.

But now in that mind you have a state of dispassion that is what the highest state of dispassion,

That is what the highest state of dispassion is master talking about.

And one more point and then we'll start with our practice.

Action and knowledge.

Let us understand that.

Action means practice,

Action and the practice more or less the same thing.

Your mind says let me grab a cup of tea,

You have a total freedom to act.

Your mind says,

You may say no I will not take it or I will take it or I will take a lemon tea or I will take a black tea.

Means what?

Your action,

You have a total freedom and because of the total freedom and because the mind is guiding the action and because the ignorant mind is guiding the action,

Hence every action is defective.

It can produce result,

It cannot produce the result.

Go to the kitchen,

You prepare a black tea and you take a sip,

Next action and you say no I'm not going to take it.

Action is always variable and changing,

Clear?

Knowledge is knowledge,

Knowledge of the John will never change,

Knowledge of the Sophie will never change.

I cannot say knowledge of the Sophie is the knowledge of Anne.

In knowledge we don't have freedom to change the knowledge.

You understand?

We can change,

You can take action,

You can attend the session and the other day you will say okay hell with you,

I'm not going to attend,

I don't like,

You have a total freedom,

Isn't it?

For knowledge you don't have a freedom.

Are you getting it?

I'm talking of dispersion.

So because the knowledge,

I don't have the freedom,

One,

Knowledge will never change,

Two,

Hence I should pursue the knowledge.

I should pursue the knowledge of not Mars and moons.

You see the sorry state of affairs of the human race?

We have reached to the Mars and moons and asked them who you are,

What is your true nature?

They don't know.

You have reached to the Mars and the moons,

Come on,

Can you tell me are you living in peace and happiness 24 by 7?

The answer is no.

Knowledge of the reality when it is revealed in the mind,

That is what the meditation is.

I always give an example,

You have a storm outside,

You do not fight with the storm,

You rush inside the home,

Nowadays you know today perhaps I have heard that in New Jersey and New York there is a heavy snowfall.

You cannot control it but what you do,

You rush inside the home,

Close the door,

Calmness is already there inside,

There is no storm there,

Are you clear?

Right by this example when the mind is torn by anxiety,

Duality,

Distraction,

Wandering,

Conflict,

Hatred,

Jealousy,

First part is the practice,

We have to rush inside.

So when you rush inside the home,

Do you tell the home please give me some calmness,

Calmness is already there.

Do you see that?

Calmness is already there,

Peace is already there.

So whatever the practice that we do,

99% of these steps purify the mind at a different level and once the mind is purified because of the dispassion in the mind,

Knowledge of the reality is revealed,

That is what meditation is.

Meditation,

Mindfulness,

Whatever the name you want to say.

When we say when you rush inside the home,

Close the door,

Calmness reveals same thing when the mind goes inside in the state of dispassion,

In the state of purity,

The meditation reveals the knowledge of the reality.

Are you getting it?

So the time comes in our life when we commit ourselves for the journey of the self-discovery,

The time comes,

You wake up in the morning,

You are in a meditative state,

You are walking,

You are in a meditative state,

You are talking,

You are in a meditative state,

You fall into sleep,

You are in a meditative state.

So let us start our journey of meditation,

Close your eyes,

Then we will share our experiences,

Close your eyes and close your eyes.

Then you close your eyes,

Look inside.

Look inside the space and look inside the head in the space.

You look at the body,

Awareness of the body.

You see,

Simple awareness of the body will work.

What is that awareness?

Awareness is the feeling,

Awareness is the knowledge of the body,

Awareness,

Knowledge and experience.

And you are looking at the body.

Now,

Look at the neck joint,

Feel the sensation.

Being comfortable in steadiness today,

We are going with the state of dispassion.

You simply look at the shoulder joints.

So when you look at it,

It means you are aware,

You simply feel it,

You know it.

Like a jeweler who does not see the utility,

Who simply sees,

This is it and this is the cost.

So you see the shoulder joints,

You are aware,

You feel.

So what I said sensation,

Being comfortable and steadiness,

That is all.

Look at the entire body from the top of the head to the toes,

Feel the sensation and being comfortable and steadiness.

We will go a little deeper.

Since the body you experience as sensation,

Being comfortable and steadiness.

The higher level of dispassion means,

Means what?

It is so simple.

It simply means that body is not me,

Body is a matter.

I have the right perception and the mind does not interfere.

When the mind does not interfere,

The body remains as a matter,

As an instrument like the smartphone.

It does not move as long as I do not disturb it.

Why it is disturbed?

Because of the wandering mind,

Distracted mind,

Obsessed mind,

Lazy mind,

Long list.

So look inside the forehead,

Become aware of the thought,

Feeling,

Sensation and the images that passes to the mind and there you apply.

Is thought real?

No,

Thought is constantly changing,

Image,

Feeling,

Sensation.

They jump into the mind,

They get out of the mind.

Okay,

No issue.

Let me remain aware of it.

How I am aware of it?

See that sky pervades everywhere.

Inside the sky there is a,

That is a space and the space is awareness.

Now I give the example.

The birds flying in the sky.

The sky is still present.

It never goes away.

That awareness remains there.

In between the thoughts are there like the birds,

They come,

They go,

They come,

They go.

No issue.

And look at the breath.

When you look at the breath,

Just make your breath little deep,

Silent and slow.

Not very deep,

Simply deep,

Silent and slow.

And as you inhale,

As you inhale,

Move the mind inside the right arm from the shoulder to the fingertips.

And as the mind,

As the breath is coming out,

Move the mind from the fingertips to the shoulder.

In the space inside,

This is a device we are using.

We are simply using this as a device.

What is that?

The breath is a car.

The mind is the driver.

And where in mind is moving?

Into the space.

In the same way,

Move your mind with the breath.

Breath inside your left arm.

Now what is this?

This is an action.

Everyone is doing.

Someone will do this step with 100% awareness.

Others will have only 50% awareness.

Third will have 60% awareness.

Some will pay more attention to the movement of the mind.

Other will pay more attention to the breath.

So that brings the different result.

But as we continue and do the regular practice,

We find the state of dispassion within and then it becomes a natural state.

See that?

That is what we discussed today.

Continue.

Df content.

Continue.

And now move the mind with the breath inside the right leg.

You see,

Is the body moving?

That is a reality check.

No,

Body is in the state of steadiness.

Why?

Because the mind is withdrawn inside,

It is moving inside with the breath in the space.

So as if we separate the body from the mind in the field of awareness.

That goes a long way.

Continue my friend.

You see,

Is the body moving?

That is a reality check.

No,

Body is in the state of steadiness.

And now move the mind inside the left leg.

Just casually you are doing it.

In the state of freedom,

Enjoying it.

Continue the mind.

Continue the mind is aware of the space inside.

You see that when this happens,

When the mind is moving into the space,

Whatever happens in the body,

The mind is disconnected,

So to say.

Can you imagine?

I have one friend and a student in Brooklyn.

She suffers from acute Parkinson's and now moving the mind inside the left leg.

So on a given day,

When her mind is totally disconnected from the body,

There is no movement at all during the entire practice.

And she realizes that this principle works.

The mind doesn't go to the body,

It will not move the body.

When it will not move the body,

You'll have a variety of experiences in the body.

Tingling,

Numbness,

Freezing,

Stillness,

And that will help the mind to go within.

This is what we are understanding.

Okay.

And now move the mind in the spine from the crown of the head to the tailbone.

Now can I say as long as the body remains in the state of steadiness without any effort by the mind,

You are in a state of first level of dispassion.

You see that is what we do in our journey with understanding,

With clarity.

My master used to say,

Are you clear?

Yes,

So I did the practice,

It did not bring the result.

Oh,

It does not bring the result.

Then master says,

Go back first.

First,

First think of it.

Think of it.

Yes,

Contemplate and reflect,

Move to Viveka,

Go to dispassion,

And then do the practice.

And.

.

.

And doing nothing.

Look at the head and the neck,

Awareness,

Knowledge,

And experience,

Head and the neck outside.

And then look at the skin of the head and the neck,

Experience,

Sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

Every time I tweak the practice in order to deepen your experience.

Look at the right arm from the shoulder to the fingertips.

Just say I'm changing the phrase,

Does it bring some deeper experience,

Move the mind on the right arm as if the mind is touching every cell of the skin of the right arm from the shoulder to the fingertips.

You may feel deepening of the sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

Moving the mind on the left arm,

The mind is moving on the left arm as if.

.

.

As if.

.

.

You are moving the mind on each and every cell of the skin of the left arm.

You are there.

You feel the sensation.

When you feel the sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

You move the mind on the rib cage.

Be there.

As if the mind is touching every cell of the rib cage in the front and the back.

And you there,

You experience the sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

Remember my friend,

We are treating the mind like a child.

As the child is playing with us,

We are playing with the mind in the state of awareness that leads to the state of dispassion.

You cannot fight with the mind in meditation.

You don't suppress,

You don't control.

Very important.

And.

.

.

Move the mind on the belly.

Be there.

Feel the sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

Move the mind on the right leg from the right side of the waist.

Touching every cell of the right leg from the right side of the waist to the hip,

Thigh,

Knee,

Calf,

Ankle,

Heel,

Toes.

Take your own time.

And you experience sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness.

Wonderful.

Now the left leg moving the mind and the left leg.

You see,

After some time some people take little time,

Other people.

.

.

It happens instantly.

So when it starts happening instantly just when I say,

You will see a tremendous improvement.

And sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness in the left leg.

Entire body.

From the top to the toes.

I could see if you feel that now,

Outside the body has moved into a state of natural stillness.

And you might be feeling some sensation.

Recognize and accept them and continue the journey.

Experience the sensation,

Relaxation,

And stillness in the entire body.

In that state where nothing is disturbing you even if there is a storm outside.

What it means now the mind is living within,

You have moved inside,

Left the storm outside.

You did not fight with it.

You simply left it.

The storm where?

In the mind.

Very good.

And in that.

.

.

You walk the mind from the crown of the head inside in the space to the heart.

You see the heart.

You become aware of the heart within the center of the heart.

We are not talking the physical heart.

We are talking the center of the ribcage is the heart which is the seat of consciousness.

We are not talking of the.

.

.

Just become aware of the space.

And in that space,

In that space,

Move the mind inside.

Om Shanti.

So you sing it mentally.

And the moment you sing Om,

Become aware of the.

.

.

Either the state of doing nothing and become.

.

.

Om is a pointer to.

.

.

The real self.

In Shanti,

The infinite space.

So again,

Go deeper.

First milestone,

Then the second milestone.

What is that stone in the mind?

That stone is a point in the space.

And you there.

.

.

Become aware.

I told you,

You never forget John,

You never forget Sophie,

I gave that example.

So mind is holding on that steadiness of the self.

And again,

Next milestone,

Continue to move with it.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Doing nothing.

Doing nothing.

Remain as you are.

Just remain as you are in the state of.

.

.

Doing nothing.

Om Shanti.

Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Om Shanti.

Shanti.

Shanti.

Bring your awareness on the right hand,

Your awareness on the left hand.

Lift your both the palms,

Place it on your eyes,

Open the eyes inside,

Know your experiences.

Bring the hands down.

And now we'll share the experiences.

Let us see if the Sophie can.

.

.

I can listen to the Sophie.

Hello.

I don't listen to you.

So just hold on,

Let me try it again to share your.

.

.

I don't hear you.

So I don't hear.

Let me refresh and see if anything can be done.

If it can be done,

It is wonderful.

I don't hear.

Can you say anything?

I don't know.

There might be something which might have happened.

So I don't hear anything.

Let me see.

So ultimately you can write to me that troubleshoot text,

Everything appears to be.

.

.

Maybe it needs a restart.

It wants a restart of the computer,

So when we restart then it will.

.

.

So just.

.

.

It was good.

You can say,

Nod your head.

Did you understand the word dispassion?

So last point,

Then we will say goodbye.

When you.

.

.

Dispassion is a practice,

It takes day in and day out.

Every day we need to live into that state of dispassion.

When we live into that state of dispassion,

The mind naturally stays focused inside.

Naturally.

It is looking at the reality.

Or even if it does not know the reality,

It is looking at that pure state of consciousness inside.

So then what happens?

Now we are living in a transactional reality.

When we live into that transactional reality,

The mind does not move from its past impressions.

It does not move from the anxiety,

Duality,

Conflict.

That is what we say,

We live into the highest state of dispassion.

So the practice has two elements.

One is holding the mind in the state of steadiness within,

And second is the state of dispassion.

So dispassion is the result of viveka,

Discernment.

And discernment is the result of.

.

.

Checking here is non-self,

Here is the real self.

Not self in real self.

Then what happens?

You live,

Play and perform in this world.

When pain comes,

Thank you very much.

I know you are going to teach me endurance.

When pleasure comes,

The mind does not move into the ego sense.

It remains in the state of calmness.

Pleasure,

You don't inflate your ego.

Pain,

You don't deflate your ego.

A state of equanimity is maintained in the state of dispassion.

That does not affect you as an individual.

Nobody,

We will talk at length in the next session.

That is all.
