Welcome.
We will begin the online meditation with Venerable Pum Yun Su Nim shortly.
Before we proceed,
We will meditate for a brief moment to calm our minds.
안녕하세요.
Uh.
.
.
In the next four days,
It will be Chuseok in Korea.
What does this mean for North Korea?
Be in the midst of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Now that I think about it,
다리 아주 엄청 빨갛습니다.
I was looking up at the sky on my way over here and I saw the moon was really bright.
The weather is cold and chilly.
The weather was getting to be a little chilly,
Frosty.
I think autumn is ripe.
Just like we're really in the middle of autumn.
I spent most of my day at night.
Most of the time today I actually spent harvesting and picking up chestnuts.
Maybe it's because of the typhoon or the weather,
But chestnuts are smaller than they used to be.
Maybe it's due to climate change,
Maybe it's due to the hurricanes they've experienced,
But the chestnuts tended to be smaller than usual.
I decided to meditate with the public online for the next five days.
Over the five days of Thanksgiving holiday.
I plan to lead meditation sessions.
Without people applying.
Due to COVID-19,
The Korean government decided not to visit their hometown during Chuseok.
And if possible stay at home with your family.
Due to the pandemic,
South Korean government is recommending people stay home,
Not visit their countryside homes,
And to also not travel.
If you have a family,
You can do that,
But if you live alone without a family,
I couldn't go on a trip.
I couldn't go back home.
I felt very lonely.
And that's fine for those people who live with their families,
But if you live by yourself.
.
.
It will tend to be lonely if you can't travel,
If you can't go home,
And you have to stay by yourself for five days.
That's why I'm here with them.
I suggested that we do meditation.
So I suggested that we go get into meditation together with those folks.
If you think about spending time alone at home,
Living alone without a family is the best way.
It's a bad condition,
But if you look at it from the perspective of meditation,
It's the best condition because you can do it because you live alone.
So if you wanted to be with others,
Being alone is not a good situation.
However,
If you wanted to practice meditation,
Being alone is actually an ideal situation for you to find yourself in.
If the poop is in the room,
It is treated as a treasure,
But when it goes to the field,
It becomes a step.
Now if there's solid waste in your room,
Then it's just waste,
It's trash,
Something to get rid of.
But if you take the same thing and put it out in the field,
It becomes fertilizer.
When it's a mother,
It's the object to be thrown away,
But when it's a step,
It's the object to be brought.
So when it's waste,
You need to throw it out.
However,
When it becomes a fertilizer,
It's something that's desired,
That you need.
It's the same.
At any point in time,
Depending on where and how you look at things,
And sometimes the value is the opposite.
So you take the same thing,
And depending on the situation,
The context,
The timing,
And the utility of it,
Its value can be the opposite.
The most negative factors in the practice of Buddhism.
How you look at it is the most positive factor.
바꿔놓게 될 수가 있습니다.
So practice is a way for you to take something that seems valueless.
And take that and by shifting your perspective and how you look at it.
Increase the value of this what was previously valueless.
Thank you.
Bok is not something that someone gives to you.
And change your perspective on things such as limitations.
Oh.
When we look at the Buddha's teaching,
We can see that it is a blessing from the law.
It's a fortune or luck.
It's not something that somebody else gives to us.
It's an ability for you to take a bad situation and find what's good about it.
That's really the nature of the fortune.
That Buddha's laws can impart to us.
The environment we live in,
You will not always get what you want.
Plus the world doesn't always work the way you want it to.
There are times when you get what you want,
And there are times when you don't.
You know,
Sometimes it works,
Sometimes it just goes opposite the way you want it to.
If we change our perspective when things don't go the way we want,
Change your perspective to make it a better condition than you want.
We are on the path to happiness.
But if the situation doesn't work out that you want it to,
But if you can just shift your perspective,
And oftentimes that bad situation previously can actually turn out to be something much more valuable.
Some people say that it was not the cause of the accident,
But I would like to say that it was the cause of the accident.
대응을 합니다.
So if you take a look at a situation that doesn't work out the way it does,
Instead of blaming as something that you didn't achieve your goals because of that bad situation,
A practitioner should be able to shift perspective and say,
Because of that situation,
I'm actually able to get to my goals better.
In any case,
The sufferings of the person 없다 라고 말하는 것은 Whether the environment is good or bad,
자신에게 긍정적으로 바라보므로 해서 with the same conditions.
So the.
.
.
Way that a practitioner can say that there's no suffering,
Or he or she does not suffer any suffering,
Is that no matter what the situation is being faced,
You're able to shift your perspective so you look at it as positive,
Not a negative,
And be a value add to your journey.
The conditions that you have been given.
Thank you.
So that you can see yourself in a positive light.
And live a happy life.
And my wish for you is that you are always able to see the positive in any situation you face.
And with that positivity outlook comes happiness.
Bok is not something that someone gives,
It is something that I create.
Luck is not something that somebody else gives you.
It's something that you make.
네,
그렇게 해서 나날이 행복하시기 바랍니다.
And with that perspective,
I wish you happiness every day.
네,
질문 받아 보겠습니다.
And we'll take questions.
I spent much of my youth distracted by pursuing different goals such as education,
Career,
Relationships,
And wealth.
Now that my youth is over and these issues have mostly been settled,
I am no longer distracted by their pursuit.
I have turned my attention to other questions.
Has my life been worthwhile?
Is this all life has to offer?
What should I do now with my life?
Instead of coming up with new goals to distract my mind,
Do you have advice about how to address my current feelings of loss and discomfort?
Yes,
I spent most of my youth pursuing education,
Work,
Love,
Wealth,
And so on.
Now that my youth has passed and these problems have been solved in good or bad ways,
I no longer cling to these goals.
But I turned my attention to another question.
Was my life worth it?
Is this all life is?
How am I going to live my life now?
Instead of setting new goals and making my mind busy,
Can you give me some advice on how to face the emptiness and uncomfortable feelings I'm feeling right now?
Yes,
When you are young,
You want to do something.
Hope or dream.
In order to achieve these things,
Daebun Energirul 투입하게 됩니다.
So when we are young,
We tend to expend our energy pursuing goals and dreams that we desire.
그것이 이루어졌냐,
이루어지지 않았느냐 happiness and unhappiness will be divided.
And we are happy or unhappy,
Depending on how our goals can be achieved or not.
근데.
.
.
But.
.
.
When you look back on your youthful days,
As you get older and look back.
Whether it was a success or a failure,
Whether it was successful or not,
It doesn't seem that important.
Almost feels it hasn't been,
It's not that important whether you achieved a goal or not.
For example,
When I was in high school,
Satyam Sarovar.
백점 받았다.
The difference is.
.
.
거의 죽을 것만큼.
It's a painful thing,
But.
.
.
지금 되돌아본다면,
Whether I get 70 or 100 points,
What is so important in my life?
For example,
Going through high school at one point,
The final exam in math.
Now whether I got 100 or 70.
It seemed like a huge deal at that time,
But looking back,
It's really not a big deal.
It's very trivial.
When I was in elementary school,
We played marbles to see who won and who lost.
It was a big deal,
But now that I look back,
It's not a big deal.
And while elementary school you play,
You know,
With marble balls.
And whether you win or not,
It seems like all of life is actually hanging in that balance.
But looking back,
It's also very trivial.
It's not just a matter of childhood.
The goals we have in life,
눈을 감을 때 되돌아본다면 This is also the case with beads or water drops when you were young.
What would be the difference?
Through the experience of looking back on my childhood,
How do you see it?
이게 중요합니다.
So just as you look back to those pretty trivial pursuits when you're a little boy and find them trivial,
Not important.
Can you do the same at your deathbed,
Kind of looking back at your dreams that you have today and find them just as kind of trivial,
Not as important?
Achieving a goal is not important.
If you have a goal,
Do your best.
Whether the goal is achieved or not,
It is not that important.
So it's not really that important whether you achieve a certain goal,
Achieve a certain result.
The important thing is really focus on the process to get you there.
In other words,
Life is not a goal.
You can say that it is a process of living day by day to achieve that goal.
So in a way,
Life can be defined,
But not where you end up as a destination,
But it's how much effort you put into the process of living.
What kind of goal are you trying to achieve?
And reflect on negative things.
의미는 똑같습니다.
Whether you want to pursue some goal and achieving that goal,
Or whether you look back on something you did bad in the past and you repent,
The significance is pretty much the same.
Then you need a.
.
.
You're a kid.
Jogpahgana.
Ginjang haji anko.
If you do it comfortably and steadily.
Whatever the object is,
I don't think it's that important.
So I believe.
Regardless of the destination of the goal.
The important thing is for you to not to be impatient,
Not to be tense,
But really be consistent and constant in the effort you put forth to get to wherever you want to go.
When we dream,
There is a big difference between having a good dream and having a bad dream.
When we dream,
Whether this is a nightmare or a good dream,
It makes a huge difference while you are in the dream.
When I wake up from my dream,
Whether it's a good dream or a bad dream,
There's no difference.
It's just that it wasn't real.
But once you're awake,
It doesn't really matter what the nature of the dream was.
The important thing is that it wasn't real.
It was just a dream.
문제는 Whether you have a good dream or a bad dream,
How you have a good dream,
Why you have a good dream,
This is not important.
그냥 좋은 꿈이든 나쁜 꿈이든 눈을 떴을 때나 It's a dream,
Isn't it?
Or is it reality?
이렇게 그냥 놓아버리는 겁니다 So the important thing is whether it's not to pursue,
Try to pursue a good dream versus a bad dream while you're actually dreaming.
It's when you open your eyes and realize that it was just a dream,
That it wasn't real.
It was just an illusion that you created.
There is no need to study the content of the question.
Just let go of all your worries.
So addressing the question itself,
It's not something that you should spend a lot of time on.
It's an easy answer.
Basically,
You're saying to yourself,
Oh,
That was just a dream,
And just let that go.
네,
다음 질문 받겠습니다.
Next question.
Because I am bothered by my family's noise outside the room where I meditate,
I become judgmental and angry inside.
Is it okay to wear earplugs when meditating?
Yes,
I get angry when I hear the sound of my family members outside my room.
Is it okay to wear an earplug when meditating?
Awww.
There are two ways.
In a quiet place,
You can hear the sound of the family members.
It's better to go to a place where you can't be heard.
If at all possible,
Try to find a place that's quiet where you can't hear your family outside.
If that is not possible,
It is one way to do it.
But you can find a situation like that,
You know,
Then wearing earplugs when meditating is a way,
Is an option.
So if you close your eyes,
It doesn't really affect you that much,
Right?
Instead of just closing your eyes.
But if you wear earplugs,
There's some kind of echo and noise inside you.
It becomes an obstacle to being able to recognize even the slightest breath.
And that kind of a buzzing noise or echoing interferes from you being really sensitive and aware of your subtle breath.
So,
Instead of being in a quiet environment,
관심에 가는 것은 It's not that the conditions are bad,
It's just that you don't focus on your breathing.
Can you focus on your breathing under those conditions?
Can you recognize the breath?
Like this.
Focus on the tip of your nose.
Even in the midst of hearing those sounds,
내 호흡을 알아차린다 아무 지장이 없다 하면 but it is more important to be aware of the breath in such a quiet place.
You can say that your practice has become deeper.
But from another perspective.
The fact that I'm bothered by your family's noise outside the room where you meditate means that you are imbuing those noises with certain significance and you're allowing your mind and focus to drift towards that noise.
However,
Conversely,
If you can maintain that focus on the breath while all this noise is going on outside and you're able to kind of let them drift without imbuing them with any meaning,
Then it's actually a better situation and context for you to practice meditation.
For me,
It's not the earplugs.
I think it would be better to practice being able to focus on breathing without being distracted by the sound.
So my opinion is that instead of putting earplugs in,
It's almost kind of challenging yourself to be able to focus and not follow that noise or not imbue that noise with any meaning and be focused on your breath in the midst of the noise.
In this negative situation where loud noise is an obstacle to our practice,
Even if you hear that sound,
You can still breathe.
This is a higher level of practice.
I think it would be a good idea to change that.
So my suggestion is to take this bad situation,
Seemingly bad situation,
And turn that into actually a positive situation by looking at it as an ideal kind of a challenge for you to hone your ability to meditate and focus on the breath while encountering these noises.
It is not the loud noise that hinders your practice.
It is because you have taken away the mind of the noise that hinders your practice.
So it's not the noise that's preventing you to engage in good meditation practice.
Is that you are actually imbuing significance to that noise that's preventing you from practice.
I hope you make disadvantageous conditions into advantageous conditions.
So I wish you can transform this bad situation into actually a positive situation for you,
For your practice.
네,
명상을 하겠습니다.
With that,
Let's start the meditation.
There are many people who say it's good to do it for 40 minutes,
But there are also people who say it's a little difficult,
So I'll adjust it a little today.
I'll do it for 35 minutes.
Since we've been doing it for 40 minutes,
There are positive reactions to it,
But there are also reactions in which you tell us it's a little too tough.
So we're going to adjust it down a little bit,
And we'll do it for 35 minutes today.
자세를 바라압니다.
Straighten your posture.
가부자를 하고,
Lowest position.
Straighten your back.
Straighten your back.
So hands to the front.
Yes,
Close your eyes.
And close your eyes.
And focus on the tip of your heart.
Focus your mind on the tip of your nose.
The tip of the nostril.
And put your awareness on the tip of your nose.
You will know that you are breathing.
I know that you are breathing.
And breathing means the breath air is going in.
When you breathe in,
Think that you are breathing in.
When you breathe out,
Think that you are breathing out.
If it's soft,
Think it's soft.
If it's rough,
Think it's rough.
호흡의 상태를 알아차립니다.
And know when the air is coming in,
And know when the air is going out,
And know when the breath is soft,
Or know when the breath feels rough.
Relieve all tension in your body and mind.
Relax your mind,
Your body.
With a relaxed mind.
And let your mind be relaxed and spacious.
잘하려고 애쓰지도 말고.
And don't try to do well.
Don't give up.
다음은 호흡을 알아차립니다.
And just be aware of the breath.
If you lose the focus,
Know that you lost it and regain that focus.
I'll keep doing it.
And we do this constantly and consistently.
Even if you hear sounds from outside,
Don't take your mind off of it.
No matter what sounds or noises you hear,
Don't let your mind wander and chase those.
Even if you have a past thought or a future plan,
Don't waste your time on it.
And don't let your mind wander into any past memories or future plans.
Let those thoughts come by.
Daman ohbeul areuchyeorinda.
And you just focus on the breath.
To have one like this in my car.
How was it?
5 minutes is short,
So it looks easier.
Is it easier with five minutes less?
When I meditate for the first time,
I usually meditate for 30 minutes.
Sikhago,
Sipun Sikho,
Samshipun Sikho.
For the beginner meditators,
We usually go 30 minutes,
Then rest for 10,
Then go for 30 minutes again in this pattern.
Next,
We will do number 35 and number 10.
Damn 35,
10.
Then,
Do it for 40 minutes,
10 minutes,
40 minutes.
Then 4010 and Yes,
10 minutes in the middle is not a break.
The ten minutes is not for rest.
Almost like a walking relaxation meditation to take the aches or the pains and shake your legs loose.
30 minutes,
10 minutes,
30 minutes,
40 minutes,
10 minutes,
30 minutes.
When you meditate,
It's just one time.
So the 10 minutes is included in the meditation time,
Actually.
So it's not a separate rest.
20 minutes to 30 minutes.
You have to go to the bathroom,
So you have some time to rest.
Then afterwards,
You do actually get 20 to 30 minutes of intermission time,
Whereas you go to the restroom and do something else that you need to.
우리가 5일간 명상한다.
When you meditate for 10 days,
You repeat it all day long.
So when we say we go like 5 days or 10 days of meditation,
Every single day,
The whole of day goes by through the cycles.
Mulanindji.
간단한 식사시간은 Cheerio.
Because we do have time for simple meals.
네 이제.
.
.
I'm getting a lot of thoughts.
Now we see comments in the chat window.
The pain in the legs was bearable,
And the delusions went back and forth,
But the time to focus on breathing became a little longer.
It was a short time.
My legs ached and there were still distracting thoughts,
But I was able to focus longer on the breath,
So it was a good time for me.
In the midst of being in pain every day like a newbie,
Focus on your breathing.
So although I do this daily,
My legs ache as if this was the first time I was doing it.
Please lower it a little.
A little more.
No,
The other way around.
A little more.
.
.
I just meditated for the first time,
And my legs are so numb.
This was my first time participating.
My legs ached too much.
I wanted to give up in the middle,
But I decided to kind of stay on and endure.
Do I have to kind of bear it,
Even if my leg aches?
Even if your legs hurt,
Don't straighten them.
Keep going.
Yes,
Even if your legs ache,
Don't unwind your position,
But keep your position and continue.
Nah.
In reality,
You can endure it,
But the principle is not to endure it.
So I'm sure you have to endure.
The original underlying intent is not for you have to endure something.
If you hold it in,
You get nervous and stressed.
Because if you force yourself to endure something,
Then you tense up and you get yourself stressed.
In meditation,
All tension is released and the mind is at peace.
And maintain your awareness.
Because the intent of meditation is completely relax and lose all your tension and maintain your focus in the midst of that.
So,
While feeling pain as pain,
Even if you have severe pain,
Focus on your breathing without missing it.
So feel the pain in your legs as pain and despise that strong pain.
Maintain the focus on the breath.
It's as if you can hear the outside world,
But you don't take your mind away.
호흡에 집중하듯이.
Just like you're not distracted by the noise from the outside,
But maintain your focus on the breath.
물론 저심자는 이게 잘 안됩니다.
Of course,
This is very difficult for a beginner.
Because if you hear noise from the outside,
You tend to drift and focus on the noise.
Even if you think about the past or future,
You will lose your breath and lose your mind.
If you think about the past or you've got great plans for the future,
You lose the focus on the breath.
You let your thoughts and focus drift towards those thoughts.
But it is difficult not to let go of the heart of pain.
That's why it's very difficult not to actually pay attention and lose the focus on the breath when your leg aches.
Vakate.
When you feel pain in your legs,
You can practice breathing without letting go of your mind.
We need to focus on whether we can feel the pain and maintain the awareness of breathing.
So just as you're practicing not to lose your focus despite the distractions,
Despite the noise from the outside,
That's how you should challenge yourself in practice.
And I maintain my focus on the breath,
Even despite the pain in my legs.
Yes,
But we can't always take the best path.
But of course,
You can't be the best every time.
참기라도 해야 합니다.
That's why you can't get to that state in the beginning.
So that's why in the beginning,
You have to go through a stage of enduring the pain.
This is not desirable,
But… It is better than spreading your legs as you wish.
So this is not the optimal state or the 2B state,
However.
Rather than kind of unwinding your leg.
And surrender to the pain,
To that sensation,
It's better for your practice enduring through the pain.
Yes,
It's the same when you're sleepy.
Same thing with drowsiness.
When you feel tired and sleepy,
Your body is sleepy,
But your goal is to keep breathing.
Even if your body's tired,
You feel sleepy.
Even though you're sleepy.
.
.
Maintaining that focus on the breath is the goal.
그렇지만 현실에서는 그렇게 잘 안됩니다.
Of course,
In reality,
That's not always easy.
Breathe in.
절대가 많습니다.
As we often lose our focus on the breath and fall asleep.
But if you quit doing this,
It's better than sleeping.
What I'm saying is trying through all these distractions,
All these temporary setbacks is better than not doing it at all or just falling asleep.
We have the best goal to reach.
So we have the desire and state.
If we can't do it and miss it,
We should at least give it a try.
However,
Our reality dictates that we don't often get to that state,
But we pick the most optimal way that's available to us in this reality to get to it.
If we are in a situation where we can't even turn a blind eye,
To avoid the worst,
You have to make a choice.
But even if you can't just choose that,
No options are available.
Then you should even choose the option at least that avoids the worst-case scenario.
And those are the choices we face in the midst of reality.
We will finish here today.
And with that,
Let's conclude today's session.
I'll see you again next week.
