A body scan is a practice of somatic awareness, one that focuses on each body part in succession to become more in tune with the internal felt sense experience of the body. It can be helpful in releasing tension in the muscles, find a sense of relief from physical pain, and help our body prepare itself for sleep.

So you can allow yourself to settle back into your chair,

Closing your eyes or softening your gaze and begin to take a few deep breaths.

Opening the muscles of your face as you exhale,

Letting go of any overt tension in your shoulders,

Back.

Letting your belly hang loosely and your hands resting comfortably on your lap or the arms of the chair.

Taking a moment to allow your full attention on the natural rhythm of the inhale and exhale.

Simply being with this experience of breathing in and breathing out.

Letting the natural rhythm of the breath to fall into the background of your attention as you bring some awareness to the physical sensations you're noticing in your body.

Gently scanning from the top of your head all the way down in the direction of your toes.

Realizing if there's tightness you might be holding,

Pressure that you're feeling in one spot or another.

And when you come across these areas of tension,

Is it possible to breathe into them?

Allowing a little bit more space to infiltrate that tension or tight area of your body.

We're not always able to get rid of the tension or the tightness,

But it is possible to create a little more space around it.

Letting the natural workings of our body heal and process the inflammation.

And after simple acknowledgement of that tight or tense place,

Taking a breath or two and breathing into it,

You can allow the scan to continue.

As if your attention is gently massaging all areas of your body.

Washing over your body with nurturing and careful attention.

Allowing the scanning to fall into the background of your attention.

As you take your body as a whole into your mind's eye.

Not needing to do anything differently.

Not needing to change anything that is.

But accepting your body in its current state,

Holding it with care and love.

And maybe setting an intention to be grateful to it.

Thanking it for carrying you from one activity to the next.

Honoring its strength and limitations.

Focusing in the natural process of healing and recovering when life presents it with challenges.

Our physical body provides so much information that we often overlook.

Taking a moment or two to connect with it.

Notice what it is telling us.

Acknowledging the information.

And being open to whatever that experience is.

This connection with ourselves allows us to be more fully connected to another.

Allows us to be present and see things with more clarity and trust.

Allowing yourself to take a few more deep breaths in and out.

Perhaps sending an intention of gratitude to yourself to give yourself this space and time to reconnect.

And when you're ready,

You can open up your eyes.
