This recording provides audio guidance to a meditation called settling the mind in its natural state. It begins with bare attention brought to sounds, then seeing and then the mind. The invitation is then to just be aware of the raw experience of thoughts, states of mind and objects of mind. It is the third meditation of Day 6 of a 10-day silent online retreat with Malcolm Huxter and Lisa Brown Aug-Sept 2021.

Settling the mind in this natural state.

So you're invited to construct your posture.

Preferably upright,

Stable,

Dignified.

Enrousing intention.

And you're invited now to turn your attention,

Your awareness to sound.

The raw experience of sound as vibration.

Just sound.

Noticing the arising and passing of vibrations.

Putting aside the concepts you hear about,

You have about the sounds.

Just noticing sounds.

Bare awareness of sound.

And now.

Without trying to suppress sounds or these experiences.

You're invited to open your eyes.

And let your gaze settle.

Probably just in front of you somewhere.

Open your eyes.

And pay note to seeing.

Seeing consciousness.

And even though you may be adding concepts to the things that come into your visual field,

Such as lounge or wall,

Roof,

Flooring.

Put aside the concepts.

And notice the raw experiencing of seeing.

Shades of light and dark.

Colours,

Shapes.

Like looking at an abstract painting.

Just seeing.

Noticing the arising and passing of vibrations.

And without closing your eyes,

Leaving your eyes open.

Put hearing in the background.

Put seeing in the background of your attention.

In the background of your awareness.

And bring attention to your mind.

What's arising in your mind.

Thoughts.

Objects of mind.

Visual states.

Step back.

And watch the show.

And if you think you're not thinking,

Remember that's a thought.

Just notice whatever arises.

Endeavor to be present.

Not chasing after and engaging in thoughts that may be pleasant.

Staying still,

Watching them come and go.

And not resisting and trying to push away thoughts that may have a feeling tone of unpleasant.

Just letting them come and go.

Like settling back and just watching the show.

Like settling back,

Laying down,

Watching the sky.

Clouds passing by.

Sometimes ominous thunderclouds,

Ominous dark storm clouds.

And sometimes just wispy clouds.

Light and fluffy.

And sometimes just clear sky.

So in a few moments I'll end this exercise.

If you found it useful to be,

To practice bare awareness of the senses of sound,

Hearing,

Seeing and cognizing.

Let us know that this is a practice you can access whenever you need.
