Heart Chakra Guitar Meditation With Tonglen
by Mary Aranas
Heart Chakra deals with the air that we breathe, and our lungs; also with forgiveness, compassion, and kindness. Heart chakra tenderizes us for empathy and care, to both receive and give acceptance and love. TongLen is a Tibetan Heart Meditation that uses imagery and breath to empathize and lighten the load of a fellow sentient being. It's a beautiful healing practice for the giver as well as those they bless. Raul's beautiful guitar notes lead into and complete the meditation journey.
Transcript
Our Heart Chakra meditation today comes from the Tibetan Heart Yoga lineage.
I first learned it from Gisha Michael Roach when he was visiting New York City.
For this meditation you might be seated comfortably,
Supporting underneath the hips as need,
Supporting behind your spine if you desire.
You may also choose to take this meditation in a comfortable,
Reclining posture.
The Heart Chakra is the fourth and therefore the middle of seven chakras or energy wheels,
As chakra just means wheel,
That are positioned along our human spine.
And Heart Chakra is located,
As you might imagine,
Right at the sternum chest where our heart,
Our lungs are located.
The color is green,
All the greens of the life-giving grasses and leaves and trees of the planet and the element is air.
You might begin by just finding your body as comfortably situated as you can be,
Gently relaxing your eyelids down,
Your eyelashes restful upon your cheeks.
And say to yourself,
I have the right to give and receive love.
And let your exhale and your inhale be the receiving and the giving back of air.
Receiving air into your lungs body,
Giving back air into the world,
The space,
The room.
The air in and out of our bodies as the most natural and first symbol of our right to receive and to give air,
Life energy,
Love.
I have the right to love and be loved,
To breathe and be breathed.
And as you comfortably settle where you are right now,
Allow all the colors of green that speak to you of spring of life,
Of lush foliage and beauty of nature to be all around you as though you were in a garden of delight.
And to begin tong-lin,
Taking away of darkness,
Meditation of compassion and empathy.
Begin by picturing in your own chest cavity where your heart chakra is a beautiful flower with a jewel gem right at the heart of it.
What flower is resonant for you,
Comes to mind for you that you can see most clearly as a symbol of beauty and life.
And what jewel or gem speaks to you of the consciousness of the brilliance of our spark of awareness?
Whatever this flower and this gem are,
We're going to chant to it in the first step of tong-lin meditation.
And in this step you might be chanting just as softly,
Loudly or even silently as you might wish the long sound of om,
Like a long om,
As though it were just a cosmic wind.
They say that om might have been the original sound,
The big bang that created the cosmos.
Be that as it may,
You might choose just to do a long om to carry the vocal cords with your breath.
You might choose,
And pardon my inadequate Sanskrit pronunciation,
You might choose to chant what is said to be the Dalai Lama's favorite mantra,
Om mane padme om,
Which means,
Om,
The jewel of consciousness is in the lotus of the heart.
So om,
The jewel is in the lotus,
The consciousness is in the heart.
So we are honoring that flower in our heart and the gem in it.
It might not be a lotus,
If you're not familiar with lotus,
It might be your rose,
Your magnolia,
Whatever it might be.
So we'll do this together.
I'm going to chant om mane padme om.
You might be joining me with that,
Or you might be doing a long om,
All of that either vocally or even silently,
Taking a deep breath in now.
Om mane padme om.
And exhale,
Count one.
And inhale,
Count one.
And now exhale,
Count two.
And inhale,
Count two.
Continue to exhale and count.
And then inhale and count.
All the way,
Continue to do this up to ten cycles of a deliberate exhale and inhale.
Continue to do this.
We call this the perfect ten.
And it is a declaration of immortality,
Deliberately thinking of our breath as exhale.
And then inhale to declare that consciousness exists before that first baby's inhale,
Exists after our final bodily exhale,
Turning that concept of life around.
So you are chanting your perfect ten of exhales and inhales.
Even when you reach ten,
Continue to be conscious of your breath cycle as though it were an exhale,
Followed by an inhale.
Beautiful,
So that we all catch up and meet together.
And we have just completed the first two of the three steps in tong-lin.
The first step was chanting to the jewel in the flower of our heart.
Step two was the perfect ten cycles of out-breath followed by in-breath.
And now the third,
The final beautiful tong-lin meditation stage.
In your gorgeous green garden of life,
You are going to choose somebody to bless and ease and just lighten whatever discomfort or suffering they might be feeling currently in their life,
Whether it is something physical in their body or their circumstance,
Or perhaps it is mental or emotional.
Whatever it might be,
Choose someone that you are going to love and bless,
Enlighten,
Pain for.
And yes,
This someone may be yourself,
A past self,
A present self,
Or it might be anyone else that you may choose,
Just so long as you are able to envision your chosen friend sitting or lying or standing comfortably in front of you,
Wherever and however you are now.
And they are not aware,
They do not see you,
But they might be sensing your presence and you are able to peer right into their heart-chest and observe that they too,
In the heart chakra region,
Has a flower that represents their heart chakra and they have a gem at the center as well.
Notice what the flower is,
Whatever you decide is exactly right,
Follow your intuition,
And what that jewel or gem is,
And notice that whatever they are undergoing right now that is causing them pain or suffering has blocked the radiance of the flower and the gem.
It might look like darkness,
Like an ink spill upon the flower,
Upon the gem.
It might look like a coffee spill or a cigarette smoke,
It might just look like soot that is somehow wilting the flower,
That is somehow blemishing the gem.
Take a look at that and also take a look at their body language,
Their face,
Their bearing.
And you can see in the privacy of where they are now,
They are alone,
They do not realize you are with them.
You can see the signs of the weariness of their suffering,
Their situation,
Perhaps the lines on their face,
Their shoulders bowed,
You might see tension in their jaw or in their neck,
You might see simply a tiredness,
A grayness of energy around them.
And as you observe them now,
Look inside your own heart and draw upon the courage of your own heart,
Flower and gem,
However they show up for you today,
And determine,
Yes,
I am going to draw upon my heart,
Its consciousness,
Its courage to alleviate the suffering of my chosen friend today.
And having now made that resolution,
Bring your awareness back to your friend's heart,
Flower,
Gem and the darkness that is troubling their heart and gem.
And now,
When you consciously,
Deliberately draw your next in-breath,
See that darkness like a stream of ink begin to travel,
Move up your friend's windpipe,
See it pause when you exhale.
Watch how it is linked to you on your next inhale,
See that darkness begin to stream higher up the windpipe of your friend and see it pause as you exhale.
Continue to do this when you breathe in,
See the stream of darkness travel higher up their windpipe,
And as you exhale,
See it now stream out the curve of their sinus passage,
See the pool outside their nostrils in the space between the two of you.
Continue to breathe as you marvel and look at that dark cloud,
Dark pool of what you have pulled,
Drawn out of your friend's body through their windpipe,
And it is now hovering in the space between the two of you.
All that dark cloud is no longer in them,
But you would like to eliminate it altogether from their world,
So it will not trouble them again.
And so once again you look inside your own heart,
Upon your flower and your gem,
Not sure you can do this,
But drawing upon your willingness and your courage and your determination,
And you look once again at the dark cloud between the two of you,
And at your friend to determine to ease their face,
Their body,
Their circumstance.
So on your next inhale,
You are deliberately drawing that darkness,
That dark cloud,
Through the space between the two of you,
And when you exhale,
It is paused.
The darkness is pausing just outside your own nostrils,
And on an inhale you draw right in through your own nostrils,
You feel and see it make that curve around your own sinus passages,
And then all of that pool of darkness is entering inside your own body,
Your own heart cavity,
Your own chest cavity on your exhale,
And suddenly there is a blinding explosion of light,
And you continue to breathe,
But for a moment you cannot see anything because the light explosion has been so fast,
So brilliant,
And when the light finally begins to clear enough,
You are lightly breathing and looking and observing,
And you look inside of your own chest,
You look inside of your own cavity,
And in astonishment and in wonderment you cannot now find any trace,
Any thread of the darkness.
You look all through your chest and around it and outside of you,
And in the space between the two of you,
And in that green garden where you are both,
And you cannot find the faintest shadow or suggestion of that entire dark blot,
The darkness and cloud and trouble that you had drawn inside of you,
And instead now when you focus your attention back inside your own rib cage,
You see your flower shining radiantly,
Blossoming larger than before,
As though the petals were reaching out beyond the confines of your rib cage into the whole room,
The whole space where you are sitting,
And there are dewy drops upon the petals which are brighter with color than ever before,
And that gem,
That jewel at the center of your heart flower seems to have grown in size and in luminosity,
And it is shining and it is twinkling,
And you are reveling in and dwelling in the fantastic sensation of this magnificent,
Beautiful creation of flower and jewel that exists within your heart cavity.
You can feel the fragrance of the flower emanate to the farthest reaches of your arms and hands and your legs and toes,
Of your eyebrows and your hair,
And you can breathe in and feel the life of this flower that has expanded,
And you can feel the brilliance,
The value,
The boldness of this jewel that is your beating heart,
And you are relishing this sensation,
This unexpected gift,
This revelation of your action of Tomlin,
Of taking away your friend's darkness.
And then tentatively,
Hesitantly,
You look back across the space at your friend.
If your heart has blossomed expanded this much,
What has become of theirs?
And as you look,
Their faces beaming,
More tranquil,
Serene,
Relaxed,
More beautiful,
More handsome,
More graceful and youthful of face than you ever recall seeing on them.
It's as though they had found a peace and an internal resonance,
Transcendence of who they are,
A youthfulness and yet an eternalness to them that you have never beheld in them before.
And you see them relishing it with their eyes closed as though they did not know where it came from,
But they are drinking up every last drop of this sensation,
This deliciousness of ease and pleasure,
Beauty and tranquility.
And you look in delight and wonderment upon their hair that's lustrous and shining,
Their neck that's smooth and relaxed,
Their shoulders that are soft now,
Their heart that looks open,
Their chest unguarded,
Their whole body languid,
One of relaxation and openness,
One of expectancy,
One of youthful buoyancy.
And then you look with your x-ray vision inside their heart cavity and you see their blossom like a magnificent masterpiece of nature's beauty,
The petals of their flower,
Resplendent,
Radiant,
Dew drops,
Glinting and glittering.
With wonderment you behold the jewel of their consciousness,
Resting on the center of these petals of their heart.
That jewel shines and speaks and sparks directly to the jewel within your heart.
These two shining jewels of consciousness silently communicating to one another,
These two palpating,
Pulsating,
Blossoms of magnificent wisdom and beauty,
Consciousness and awareness,
Your two heart flowers seeming to be dancing with,
Singing to one another,
The two of you in an open,
Untouching embrace of breath between you,
The two of you giving and receiving breath,
Air,
Life and love,
The two of you within that garden of the heart chakra,
Relishing,
Relishing the afterglow of Tonglin meditation,
Anahata heart chakra,
