Forgiveness can take different forms depending on the situation and individual. For some it can involve accepting what has happened, acknowledging emotions, and releasing attachments to the past. It does not mean condoning or forgetting the actions that caused harm, but rather freeing yourself from the burden of carrying that pain. One example of a forgiveness practice is the Hawaiian forgiveness prayer called Ho’oponopono, which translates to “to make right.” The prayer involves four simple phrases: “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.” Trigger warning: This track discusses themes of forgiveness and letting go, which may be sensitive for some listeners, particularly survivors of abuse. Please be aware that the content may evoke strong emotions or reactions related to past trauma. If you feel uncomfortable or triggered, it’s okay to take a step back or seek support.

Hello and welcome.

My name is Nat and I'm here to share with you an exercise that helps me forgive and let go.

It can be a very powerful tool as we navigate this human experience.

Forgiveness is important as it allows you to let go of negative emotions,

Resentment,

Grudges.

It enables freedom and peace.

It shifts from a scarcity to an abundant mindset,

Opening up new possibilities for you.

Forgiveness involves accepting what has happened,

Acknowledging emotions,

And releasing attachments to the past.

Forgiveness does not mean condoning.

It does not mean forgetting.

Instead,

Forgiveness means freeing oneself from pain.

An example of a forgiveness practice that I pull on often is a Hawaiian prayer,

The Honoponopono,

Involving four phrases.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

It involves taking responsibility for our experiences and perceptions.

That is key to this practice.

Not what others have done,

But using this prayer to take responsibility for our experiences,

Our perceptions,

And by choosing to let go.

Together,

Let's nurture inner peace through the practice of forgiveness.

Begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you can sit or lie down.

Take a few moments to settle in your body,

Allowing whatever happened before this or whatever will happen after this.

Let it go.

Allow your breath to become slow and steady as you arrive here,

Now,

In this moment.

Now bring to mind someone who has hurt you,

Or perhaps a mistake or a regret that you carry within yourself.

Hold this person or situation gently in your mind,

Without judgment.

Take a deep breath in,

And as you exhale,

Silently say to yourself,

I'm sorry.

Feel the weight of this apology in your heart as you acknowledge any pain or resentment you may be holding on to.

Now breathe in again,

And as you exhale,

Say,

Please forgive me.

Imagine these words reaching out to the person or situation you seek forgiveness from,

Opening up a space for healing and understanding.

Take another breath in,

And as you exhale,

Say thank you.

Feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to grow and learn from this experience,

And for the forgiveness that may be granted.

Finally,

Take a deep breath in,

And as you exhale,

Say I love you.

Allow love to fill your heart,

Extending compassion not just to the person or situation you are forgiving,

But also to yourself.

Embrace the power of love to heal and transform.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I thank you.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I thank you.

I love you.

With each repetition,

Feel a sense of release and healing within you.

Take a few more moments to simply breathe and sit with these feelings of forgiveness and love.

When you're ready,

And not a moment sooner,

Gently bring your awareness back to this moment,

Feeling a renewed sense of peace and clarity.

Forgiveness is a process that may take time.

You may feel small bits of forgiveness gently fall away each time you practice this.

Practice it regularly and be patient and compassionate with yourself as you navigate your healing journey.

May this ancient Hawaiian forgiveness meditation prayer,

Honoponopono,

Bring you inner peace and healing.
