I spent my 20s studying the ocean, exploring the ocean, and working to protect the ocean. These days, the ocean feels far away, and I often find myself daydreaming about its power and depths. When I sink into its depths through this meditation, I feel a great relief and a sense of belonging. I am once again nurtured by our beautiful Mother Earth. I give credit to my teacher, Liliana Barzola Read, for the inspiration behind this meditation.

Hello,

This is Ocean Ancestor Meditation by Emily Martin.

Let's start by getting in a comfortable position.

You can be seated with your back straight or lying down.

We'll be together for about 10 to 15 minutes.

So get comfortable.

And let's start by just taking a few deep breaths,

Inhaling through your mouth,

Sorry,

Inhaling through your nose,

And exhaling through your mouth.

Now I want you to imagine that any negativity,

Shame,

Worry,

Guilt,

Anxiety,

Anything that's not in your highest good,

That's not in your essential nature,

Let's let that go.

So as you inhale through your nose,

When you exhale,

You ground down that negativity,

Meaning you just allow it to come off of your body and it gets recycled into Mother Earth.

So ground off any negativity,

Knowing that gravity wants to pull that out of you,

Wants to recycle it,

That Mother Earth can handle it.

Now I'd like you to take a moment to greet yourself,

Greet your spirit,

Which just means say hello silently to yourself.

And wait for a response.

And when you hear that response,

Know that that is your awareness,

Your consciousness,

Your spirit.

And after you've done that,

I'd like you to say to yourself,

I am a spirit grounded in my body and anchored to the earth.

Say it again.

I am a spirit grounded in my body and anchored to the earth.

From here,

I'm gonna take you on a little journey.

And we are going to go deep into the ocean.

So I just want you to imagine yourself standing on a rock at the ocean's edge.

And it's warm and sunny and pleasant where you are.

There's a warm breeze and bright sunshine and really inviting,

Beautiful turquoise water.

And you're just going to dive off of the rock into the ocean.

And as you do that,

I want you to just swim down,

Down,

Down and something is calling you down towards the bottom of the ocean.

And it feels so natural and good to be swimming down,

Down.

You might look back above and see a halo of light shining on the surface.

And you have traveled partially down into the ocean.

But I want you to keep going.

And this is easy and joyful for you.

You have an endless supply of oxygen in your body.

There's no stress in going deeper.

But you do know that you are going deeper.

The light from the sun begins to fade and get dimmer and dimmer the deeper you go.

And you can feel the pressure,

The weight of the water on your body.

It's not unbearable.

You just feel it.

You know you're going deeper.

It's starting to get a little colder and much,

Much darker.

And finally,

You've arrived at the bottom of the sea.

You might even feel your feet brushing the sand on the seafloor.

And it feels so quiet.

And it's so dark.

And it's cold.

And it's calm.

The waves of the surface have dissipated and it is calm.

It almost feels like you're in outer space.

It is so deep and it is so quiet.

It is so quiet and still.

And as you are dropping into this stillness,

You start to perceive that it's actually not quite so quiet.

There are melodies.

There are sounds.

And they are eerie and non-human.

They are the sounds of a whale.

No two,

Three.

They are the sounds of a whole family of humpbacks who are swimming and living down here in the depths of the ocean.

And they know that you are here.

They've watched you swim down.

They've been singing about you.

And they are so happy to see you and to be with you.

As they come into your perception,

As you hear them,

They come closer and closer.

And they begin to brush by you and maybe rub up against the back of your legs.

They are so happy to see you.

They are your family.

They have deep wisdom for you.

They want to know about your life,

Your joys,

Your confusions,

Your moments of bliss and your fear.

If you have a question for them,

Something you're hoping for guidance on,

Take a moment to formulate that and ask them.

They are here to support and nurture you.

If you don't have a specific question,

Then just see what they might have to say to you.

If you have asked your question and gotten a response,

If you have asked your question and gotten a response,

Thank the whales.

Know that these are the spirits that have been supporting you and will continue to support you throughout your life.

Go ahead and look up at the surface of the ocean and see that sunshine,

That tiny speck of light,

Way,

Way up there.

And slowly but surely allow yourself,

Or if you choose,

Swim to the light,

Slowly and steadily coming out of the dark expanse,

Out of the void.

Feel yourself getting closer to the light and having the weight of the water be not quite so heavy.

Feel yourself rising to the surface.

And when you break through the surface and you take that first deep gulp of air,

And you feel the sunshine on your forehead,

Just know that you are loved not only by the sun and the earth,

But by the void and your ancestors.

And I want you to lie at the top of the ocean and allow the sunshine to shine down on your skin and on your hair and on your chest and your arms and your fingers and your body and your belly and your legs and your calves and your toes.

And you are floating and being warmed by both the water below and the sun above.

And the sunshine is filling every pore of your body,

Filling it with beautiful golden light.

And when you feel like you've had enough,

You can flip over onto your belly and swim to the shore.

And thank the ocean once again for its beautiful embrace.

You are done with your meditation.

Come out slowly.

And if you'd like to record what you heard from the depths,

Please do so in your journal.
