In today's lesson we acknowledge the factors both in culture and in our brains make extended focus a challenge. Jeffrey draws from a classic analogy of the mind called The Rider & the Elephant to help you understand your mind’s distractibility and capacity to focus. You’ll test out a concrete exercise to help you start your focus and flow practice.

Foster Daily Devotion & Deep Purpose

It’s one thing to fall in love with a fantasy you have for life and work. It’s another thing to stand in love with your most impactful work in the world. In this lesson Jeffrey shares examples from the people he’s worked with and researched to help us foster a daily sense of devotion to our lives and work. A simple yet profound daily practice will help you remember why you do what you do - and motivate you to focus on it. This could help improve other lives, too.

Foster A Mindset Of Curiosity & Creativity

Every big idea begets a series of challenges. It’s all in how we face those challenges that distinguishes whether we flourish or flounder. Reverse Patterns Of Disturbance And Distractibility

In this lesson, you will go on a brief journey of your mind so you can redirect your attention with more awareness. Jeffrey uses core metaphors for states of mind we each experience - mountain mind (sustained intentional focus), pit mind (default disturbances), and rabbit hole mind (default distractions). These cognitive exercises will help you redirect your attention to mountain mind, meaning our intention(s) aligns with our attention.

Bring Wonder & Your Young Genius To Work

If you ever approach your work with a dulled spirit or if you ever feel a little burnt out, this lesson in our fundamental human nature is for you. In this lesson Jeffrey introduces the biological and adaptive importance of the human experience of wonder that momentarily dissolves our default perception so we can see again what is real and true and beautiful - including ourselves. This lesson leads us to contemplate what Jeffrey calls your “young genius” and how to bring yours to your work with you.

This lesson reviews the core principles & practices learned and tested so far. Then Jeffrey leads you through how to integrate many of these practices into a morning flow routine and ritual. The lesson closes by encouraging you to reflect upon how to foster a Do It Together mindset over a Do It Yourself mindset when it comes to advancing your most impactful work.

A near-perfect course. Asks a lot of you, so be ready — this one can’t be squeezed into your busy (or unbusy) life unintentionally. Heavy on meaningful exercises, which will challenge you at any level. Be ready to pause, revisit, take notes, take stock, change. Lots to get back to — my only wish is that each track be labeled with its contents. About to go through it all again.

This is such a high quality course and worth the Insight Timer subscription by itself. Jeffrey is a great teacher; he is knowledgeable, supportive and has an encouraging and uplifting teaching style that makes you feel more motivated about your work. He is also very supportive and kind in the classroom. I really enjoyed all ten sessions and will be revisiting some for deeper exploration. I have notebook pages full of useful guidance for my work strategy- I have already started making time each Sunday to find my intention and plan my focus sessions for the week ahead and its making a real difference. Consciously writing down what I am devoted to or curious about before my sessions is helping me to reframe my mind, especially when I am resisting work. Even if I am not yet sure about some unique traits of mine or my exact meaningful work direction - Jeffrey's guidance about my current work has helped me to see how it does contain many meaningful aspects I didn't consider before.
