I was feeling a little bit tired.
I am feeling a little bit tired.

We actually picked up a couple of big chestnuts underneath the chestnut tree this morning.
I am feeling a little bit tired.
The morning temperature fell as low as 13 degrees centigrade,
Which is about 50-ish Fahrenheit.

To be able to be with you and meditate with you today in such a gorgeous fall weather,
I think this is a great time.
I think it is a great time to meditate with you today.
The weather between spring and fall can be similar.
We express the state of our mind during spring that is a little more exciting.
I am looking forward to the rest of the season.
The fall almost describes our mind as calmer,
To be more staid.
I think it is a great time to meditate with you today.
In that sense,
Fall could be said to be a better season for meditation since we are calmer.

It is a great time to meditate with you today.
In this gorgeous fall weather,
Let us start our meditation.
Beforehand,
Let's take a few questions.
When we build a house,
If we don't try to build it well,
It will fail.
How can we get the most out of meditation and mindfulness if we don't try?
If we don't do it well,
We will not be able to do it.
If we don't do it well,
We will not be able to do it.
Yes,
We will get the most out of the meditation.
If we don't do it well,

When you say you try,
There are two different ways of describing what that means.
One is make an effort.
Making an effort leads to attention.
When kids engage in computer games,
We don't tell kids to make a better effort to do better at games.
We don't tell kids to play computer games.
We don't tell kids to make a better effort to do better at games.
Making an effort is often used in situations where you don't really want to do it,
But you have to do it anyway.
You make an effort to overcome that resistance.
If you don't do it well,
You will not be able to do it.
When we are saying that's how we describe making an effort,
That's not what's desired in practice.

If you are doing meditation with me today and you want to do well and you try to make an effort to gain a certain result,
That's not the right approach to meditation.
If you are a computer gamer,
You can do better at games and you can do better at games.
If you are a computer gamer,
You can do better at games and you can do better at games.

The world we live in doesn't always move the way we want it to.
If the person we marry,
That we thought our soulmates,
That we thought we knew each other the best,
They don't always act the way we want them to either.
Even the child I birthed and I raised,
Even he or she doesn't move and act the way I want him to.
At times,
Even my own mind doesn't actually act and behave the way I want it to.
So how can you expect the world to act and behave like you want it to?
So whether you like it or not,
All the phenomena that you experience in this world that you see and witness occur because there is a reason for them to occur.
That's why first and foremost,
You have to be able to accept the fact of these phenomena with equanimity.
So we feel wronged or we rage or we get frustrated when we can't really pinpoint to a specific cause to a phenomenon that we see.
But if you can gain insight into the cause and effect of a phenomenon,
There's no use to being wronged.
So what Buddha teaches us is that whatever situation or phenomenon you face or witness,
If you know the underlying cause of that,
Then there's no need for you to be angry or feel frustrated or feel wronged.
But does that mean that you have to be in a stasis and just be at distance witness to the phenomenon?
No.
So if the weather gets cold,
We put one more layer of clothing on.
If it gets hot,
Then we take off the layer.
Then we build dams in order to guard against floods.
Likewise,
If we believe,
According to my perspective,
That the society is unjust,
Then we have to make an effort to bring it back into more balance.
Of course,
Just because we try doesn't mean it's going to happen.
But if I think that path is just,
Then I choose to walk that path despite whatever results that I may or may not see.
So we don't have to be so tied to whether a certain result can be seen or not.
So it's important for you not to get angry or rage,
But do anything and everything you can in order for you to personally actualize a society that's just.
But if you see such a phenomenon and you rage,
You become sad,
You despair,
You disappoint,
Ultimately you are actually just causing suffering upon yourself and you are dissipating the energy for yourself.
And you're not doing anything in helping to adjust or fix the issues.
The way I describe this is that you are engaged in emotional waste.
So if you see something and if you see a situation that's unjust,
Then you try to do everything,
Whatever you can,
To rectify the situation and move it towards a more just situation.
Because the biggest worth that I feel,
Value that I feel about,
You know,
As regards to my own life is that I'm attempting and trying whatever in my own sense I can to actualize justice in this world.
And I want you to approach the situation from that perspective.
Now let us engage in meditation.
Let's do it for 40 minutes today.
Straighten your posture.
Lotus position.
Straighten your back.
As well as your head.
Two hands to the front.
And close your eyes.
Place your attention on the tip of your nose.
And be mindful of the breath coming in and leaving.
Do not try to make an effort.
Do not try to do well.
Do not give up just because you don't think it's going well.
Just do it consistently,
Constantly.
And if you feel sleepy,
Practice being mindful in the midst of that drowsiness.
And if you hear loud noises from the outside,
Practice being mindful and aware in the midst of that noise.
And if there are thoughts from the past or great plans of the future that are distracting,
Do not follow the thoughts but practice being mindful and focus on the breath in the midst of those distractions.
Do not get disappointed if it doesn't go well.
Do not get overly excited if you think you're doing well.
Just be constant and consistent in your attention and mindfulness.
Relax your mind to end body.
Especially on your mind,
Let it relax,
Let it be in a space of non-intention and where it doesn't have anything to do.
Except for focusing on the tip of your nose and being mindful and aware of the breath.
And if you lose that focus,
Just regain the focus.
And if you feel sleepy,
Practice being mindful and aware in the midst of those distractions and beliefs.
