In this practice, we visualize and call upon a special friend to help us hold our pain, our sickness. With mindful breathing, we let go of tension and practice to relax our body and mind, also noticing if we carry resistance to our experience. The presence of our special friend helps us allow our pain to be there. With acceptance, we can take care of it more easily.

Sometimes we need to call on something bigger than us to support us.

Sometimes the physical pain or illness we experience may feel too much for us to handle.

When we feel this way,

We can call up a wonderful friend or fairy godparent to help us.

Maybe you have someone like this in your life,

A grandparent,

A teacher,

A pet,

A tree,

A friend,

A special place you love to go to feel better,

Or even a group of people.

It can also be a being you create in your imagination.

That works too.

In this meditation,

This being will support us with their strength and calm.

They will help us to rest.

The more we can rest and relax into our experience,

Even if it is unpleasant or painful,

The less pain we will experience.

Tensing against and resisting pain is a normal response,

As no one wants to suffer.

Yet it often makes pain and illness worse.

In this meditation,

We will practice to relax our bodies with the help of our special friend and learn a relaxing breath to help us ease our pain.

You can do this meditation standing,

Seated,

Or lying down,

Whichever feels most comfortable or eases your feelings of discomfort the most.

Begin by settling into your posture and feeling the space around you in the room.

Feel your connection to the earth,

Through your feet if you're standing,

Through your legs if you're sitting,

Or through the back of your body if you're lying down.

It is helpful to gently close the eyes.

Now call to mind this being with whom you feel very safe,

Loved,

And accepted.

A person,

Animal,

Or plant who always enjoys being with you and supports you no matter what.

See the face and shape of this being,

What they look like or what they are wearing,

What posture they are in,

And notice how they are looking at you.

They are beholding you with utter love,

Confidence,

And delight that you are there.

Allow this special friend,

Fairy godparent,

Or other wonderful being to come close to you,

Or you can get close to it.

If they had a lap,

Feel yourself sinking down into the plump softness of their lap to rest.

You can take a deep breath and let it out with a sigh.

Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Feel them holding you close and with such kindness and care.

As you sit with them,

Feel your body relaxing as if you were getting into a warm bubble bath.

Feel your body weighted down by gravity and let your body get heavier and heavier.

Allow this wonderful being to hold you in your pain or illness.

They are big enough to hold it all and help you feel better.

Notice where in your body you feel sensations of pain or illness.

Allow the kind embrace of your wonderful being to help you hold these painful feelings and soothe them.

Feel that you are not alone.

This being is with you,

Helping you get through this difficult time.

Notice if there is a part of you that is resisting or rejecting this pain.

Ask your kind friend to help you allow these painful feelings to be there.

They will pass through you more easily if you don't try to push them away.

Now feel your in-breath and out-breath.

Feel yourself breathing with the wonderful being whose lap you are resting in.

Together you are breathing deeply and slowly.

In and out.

In and out.

In and out.

Allow your body to rest and relax even more now as your breath gets deeper and slower.

Now visualize a cake with many candles on it in front of you.

As you exhale,

Gently try to blow out all of the candles.

Inhale,

Seeing the candles.

Exhale,

Gently blowing all of them out.

Do this a few times.

And now breathe normally.

You can smile to the birthday cake and all the candles that you blew out.

Good job!

Now you can visualize that you are blowing bubbles.

Inhale as you dip the wand into the bubble liquid.

Exhale as you blow,

Creating many shiny bubbles.

Inhale,

Dip the wand.

Exhale,

Blow and create many lovely bubbles.

Do this a few times.

Now breathe normally and smile to all the shiny bubbles floating lightly in the sun around you.

And look up at the face of your lovely friend or wise being whose lap you are sitting on.

And feel them smiling at you with all their love and care for you.

You can thank them as you say goodbye to them for now.

You can always invite them to be with you again and help you care for your pain or illness.

Be aware of your body again in this room.

Smile to yourself for being so brave and steady.

You might give yourself a big hug and congratulations.

And also know that I am thinking of you and caring about you and wishing you will feel better very soon.
