Attention in an ‘omnipresent’ mental factor that appears in every moment of experience. We're always attending to something, but it's not always conscious. Can we bring it to full consciousness, or are we condemned to a life of automaticity?

Hello everybody,

Welcome to Mindfulness Live.

This week we're talking about attention.

And attention,

I often say that attention is everything.

And that throws up two very simple,

Not so simple questions.

The first is,

What are we paying attention to?

Because attention is part of every moment.

Every experience includes attention of some sort.

So we are paying attention to something.

What is it?

The other question is,

What should we pay attention to?

In other words,

What will move us forward in life?

So we're going to be looking at that a little bit today.

But first of all,

Make yourselves comfortable.

Take a nice breath.

And just gently notice the breath.

And just as gently,

I want you to notice the noticing.

This is you paying attention.

And you're attending to the breath.

And of course,

At the same time to the body.

Because that's how you know the breath through your body,

Through nerve endings,

Through movement,

Through feedback,

Neural feedback,

Sensory feedback.

You're paying attention to this moment as it appears in your body and in your mind.

Because as soon as you notice,

As soon as you feel something,

There's some reaction or some tendency to react.

There's a feeling of movement,

Of being in contact.

Be aware of that feeling.

Attend to that feeling.

The feeling of the moment.

Here and now.

It's vivid and it's simple.

It's tangible.

And so you attend to the present moment.

And in other words,

Your experience.

Staying with the breath.

Feeling grounded in your body.

Knowing your mind.

And just being.

Just breathing.

Just attending.

And here you are now fully conscious,

Fully awake.

And the breath comes and goes.

And you give each one your attention.

Knowing that the breath is many things.

It's the feeling of pressure,

The contraction of muscles,

The sensation of movement,

The noticing of rhythm,

Repetition,

And the sensation of air passing in and out.

All this is the breath.

And the breath is not separate from any of these things.

So to be aware of your breath is to be aware of this moment.

From that point of view.

From deep in your center,

Looking out.

Experiencing life.

This very moment.

Being here,

Being present,

Being conscious.

Paying attention.

And now taking three more breaths.

Open your eyes.

Betrap968 you
