One of the most accessible tools to center yourself, steady a busy mind, or clear brain fog, is to start by focusing on your external senses. This brings you to the present moment. This track is short and sweet so you can fit it in during work or any busy day where it's important to disrupt the stress cycle. My suggestion is to find a spot outdoors or look out at nature. However, you can really listen to this meditation anywhere. We’re going to practice bringing attention to our external senses. In my experience, students find sight and sound the easiest to connect with. Note: you may like to participate in this meditation without headphones so you can tune into the sounds in your environment, especially if you have noise-canceling headphones.

Hello there,

My name is Verity.

Thanks so much for joining me today.

Let's practice bringing our awareness to the present moment using our external senses.

We'll start by looking around the space we're in.

Can you identify and label five things you can see in this space?

You can say them silently in your head or out loud.

You might like to land on a particular item that makes you feel calm,

Peaceful or at ease.

If there's nothing you can see that's feeling very calm or peaceful in your environment,

Look for something that feels neutral.

Now if you're comfortable to close your eyes,

Please do.

If not,

You can lower and soften your gaze so you're not focusing on anything in particular.

Now let's start to pick up on all the sounds we can hear inside the space that we're in.

If you're outside,

You might pick up on sounds just in that immediate vicinity where you are.

Notice the ambient noises,

Sounds that come and go.

You may notice a change in how your inner ear feels as it opens up to tune into the more detailed sounds in your environment.

As you're listening,

You might start to pick up on sounds a little further away in the distance.

See if you can identify a sound that you find pleasant or comforting.

And if there is nothing that sounds particularly beautiful to you right now,

Just something that is neutral.

And sit with that feeling and that sensation of neutrality or comfort and ease.

See if you can hold this sensation in your body,

In your mind,

As you move out into the rest of your day or night.

Thanks for joining me today.
