Take 5 minutes out from your day to practise a self-compassion meditation as a mother. This meditation focusses on nurturing the mother, giving her 5 minutes to reflect on what is showing up in body and mind, with a focus on offering self-compassion. If we want to care for our children, we must care for our own nervous systems.

Finding a comfortable position,

Sitting or lying down,

Place your hand on your heart and take a slow breath in.

Tune into your body,

Noticing what's present.

How does your body feel right now?

Noticing any tightness,

Pain,

Feelings of discomfort and breathing into them,

Noticing what's going on in your mind.

Noticing any thoughts circling,

Any worries,

Doubts,

Preoccupations and just acknowledging them,

Not trying to change them,

Just allowing them to be here.

Again breathing in and breathing out and now noticing any emotions present.

Perhaps there's anxiety,

Excitement,

Fear,

Sadness,

Joy or love.

Whatever emotion is here,

Just noticing it,

Allowing all emotions to be present.

Breathing in and breathing out and reflecting on your baby now.

How has your baby been recently?

Noticing what comes up for you when you reflect on your bub.

Perhaps your baby has been unsettled,

Noticing how that's been impacting on you or maybe they did something cute that brought you a smile.

Whatever comes up,

Just noticing that and again coming back to your breath,

Breathing in and out and now with your hand on your heart,

Can you tune in to how your heart feels right now and as you do this,

Can you ask your heart,

What is it that I need right now?

Perhaps it's a message of reassurance or care or maybe it's doing something simple like having a cup of tea,

Engaging in some gentle movement or taking a nap,

If that's at all possible.

Whatever came up,

Is there a way that you can ask for that need to be met and again coming back to your breath and as we come towards the end of this meditation,

With your hand on your heart,

Can you envision being bathed in warm radiant light,

Offering love and kindness towards yourself.

If that feels hard,

Can you imagine a loving being,

A family member,

A friend,

A pet or a spiritual figure offering that loving support towards you and after doing this,

Sitting for a moment in this tender loving space and reminding yourself that you can access this space at any time,

Simply by placing your hand on your heart and tuning into your breath,

No matter what is happening in your day.
