When you feel the movement towards compulsive behavior, in this case eating, can you pause for just a second, and let the message this energy conveys show you what's really here? Listen. The way out of compulsive energy is to be with it. See what happens. Trigger Warning: This practice includes topics about mental and eating disorders. This is not a substitute for professional help.

You feel uncomfortable in this moment.

You notice a pull towards eating,

Eating the thing,

Binge eating,

Grabbing the food,

Images are floating in your mind of food potential possibilities,

A frantic feeling inside,

An anxious feeling.

Allow this moment just just for a moment to be an opportunity.

Your thoughts are convinced there's a really good reason to eat.

They might be screaming about eating.

They might feel like they're on repeat about eating,

About getting the thing,

Getting the food.

It's okay that this noise or this pull is there.

Let it be there.

Might not be so frightening that it lives.

Welcome it.

Even if it's uncomfortable,

Notice its presence.

Something here feels desperately interested in going somewhere else,

Towards the thing that's better,

Different,

Sweeter,

More pleasurable,

More.

Something wants to follow the the urge,

The urgency that way.

You don't have to feel confident now in this moment about what will happen next.

You don't need to enforce control around not eating the thing.

This is simply a pause.

No willpower is necessary.

There's nothing missing.

Notice,

You're naturally actually curious about what's happening here.

This moment has something in it.

It's an opportunity.

This moment is a moment where you get to open just a little,

Soften,

Tolerate feelings,

Sensations without repressing them,

Without running away from them so fast.

You're allowed to eat at any time you have permission to use food in any way.

You are free.

Something in the longing to eat in the craving is trying to help.

You're curious.

Just for a moment,

Little drop of willing.

Find the discomfort,

The quality,

The location of the feelings and sensations in your body.

Notice what it's like where you are,

Your surroundings.

Just let yourself be exactly where you are.

Taking in the sounds.

You can even open your eyes and look around.

Noticing the feeling of where your body meets the earth,

The bottom of your feet,

Your legs.

Then open to that discomfort,

The sensations in your body.

Notice where you feel the most movement,

The most intense sensation,

Even if it feels small and distant and not so loud.

Notice the demand to move towards something that is not this,

Not here,

Wants to move somewhere else to a pleasure.

Let that impulse be here.

Let that song play,

But turn your attention towards wherever in your body you feel discomfort.

What color is this feeling?

What temperature is it?

Cool?

Cold?

Hot?

What's the texture of this feeling?

Sharp,

Grainy,

Sandy,

Cutting.

How far does this sensation,

This feeling spread?

You might notice the label you're putting on the feeling.

Anxious,

Despair,

Terror,

Sadness.

It's okay if you don't know what it's named.

How far does it spread?

How far does it move?

Does it come to the edge of your body?

Does it move outside your skin?

If you could see this,

You could suddenly color it like invisible ink coming alive,

Lemon juice.

You could suddenly see it appear.

What does it look like?

What images come to mind?

Stay with the feeling.

Notice it's gotten alive moving quality to it.

Just for a moment,

Imagine if you let this sensation move,

However it moves,

The way you trust water spills down a mountain.

The way you trust water if you poured it in the sink to move exactly where it needs to move.

What does the sensation,

Feeling,

Energy want to do?

What does it want to share with you?

What's the invitation?

If you just looked at this,

Like you're looking at the sensation or feeling like you're looking at a butterfly on a bush,

No agenda,

No judgment,

Just curious.

It doesn't even have to go anywhere.

It might hold still.

Simply notice.

Be with it.

Allow the words,

Pictures,

Sounds you might hear internally or imagine moving scenes,

Letting them be there.

Even welcoming.

Like your hand instead of a closed fist is opening to this experience.

What if nothing is missing?

Nothing is needed.

Nothing is required.

Nothing you have to get.

Nothing you have to hunt for.

Nothing you need to be.

Letting this experience,

Feeling,

Sensation be present.

Allowing,

Welcoming.

Notice that something here does welcome it already.

Notice something is holding you.

Even if your mind is saying that's not possible.

If you feel open to it,

And only if you feel open to it,

Trust if you feel closed.

Be with that.

Be with you.

If you feel open to it,

Get a pen and paper.

Write down if the sensation,

Feeling has something to communicate.

Simple thoughts.

Even just be a listener.

Listen to what the mind is saying.

It's okay if it's talking about eating,

What's necessary,

What needs to be gotten rid of,

What you don't like,

What you do like.

Just allow the mind to communicate as it does with words.

Following these sensations.

What it wants to talk about.

Treat it like little children coming to you for support.

You are the unconditional quality of a listener.

Brilliant. I felt such tightness and self-criticism releasing, and how good it feels to feel the sadness underneath. The urge is like a hot undertow, fear of starving; it isn’t what I am; I can get curious about how it shifts.
