Hi,

And welcome to your meditation.

Today,

I have the joy of guiding you in a meditation for celebrating Jomo,

Or the joy of missing out.

Jomo means to enjoy your time doing whatever you want to do without worrying that there is something better to do or somewhere better to be.

When you embrace the joy of missing out,

You'll be relishing in the freedom and contentment that comes with choosing your own path.

Make yourself comfortable,

Sitting upright on your cushion or chair,

With your spine lengthening up towards the sky,

Your neck straight.

Do any adjusting that you need to feel good in your posture here.

You might enjoy closing your eyes for the practice to go inward.

Take a long breath in through your nose,

Let it fill up your belly,

And then slowly release your breath through your mouth and nose.

In our modern day,

It's easy and common to feel FOMO,

Or the fear of missing out.

With social media algorithmically curating your feed and the weighty expectations you might feel from an always-on culture,

You might worry that there are experiences being had that you aren't,

But for whatever reason,

Should be having.

While it's very easy to hold this frame of mind,

When taking a deeper look,

You'll find that this perspective creates the opposite of how you want to be feeling.

Take a long breath down into your hips,

As you slowly breathe out through your nose and mouth.

Relax through your hips.

Breathe in again,

Long into your belly.

As you slowly breathe out through your nose and mouth,

Soften your belly.

One more.

Breathe in long to your belly,

To your hips.

As you slowly breathe out,

Dissolve tension from your neck and shoulders.

How do you want to feel?

What comes to mind when I ask you that?

Maybe you want to feel at ease.

Perhaps you want to feel peaceful.

It could be that you'd like to feel confident,

Solid in your choices.

Maybe you want to feel connected,

A sense of belonging.

Try these feelings on.

What feels good to you?

Ease?

Peace?

Confidence?

Belonging?

Something else?

Let the feeling you choose envelope you.

Without any judgment,

Just let your whole body,

Your whole mind,

As much as possible,

Be in the feeling now,

And for 15 more seconds.

Now bring to mind the idea of FOMO,

The fear of missing out.

This is the notion that there's somewhere else you should be,

Or something else you should be doing,

That you're missing out.

How do you feel?

Your mind is powerful,

Isn't it?

It's remarkable how what you think can so quickly affect how you feel.

It's also great news,

Because you can use the power to redirect yourself,

To choose to walk down your own yellow brick road.

Take a long breath.

Release it out,

Slow and easy.

We'll take a moment now to become present where you are.

Feel your seat,

Your hips,

Supported by the chair or cushion beneath you.

The earth and ground beneath that.

Let it be a foundation for you.

Let it be a foundation for you,

And for all of us,

To be supported,

To be present now.

By taking this time,

You're already on the path of living in sync with joy.

Can you identify something that's bringing you joy in this moment?

Maybe it's the temperature of the air,

Maybe it's the smell,

Maybe it's that you are taking this time to come back to you.

And perhaps it's just that there's no obligation,

At least in this moment,

To be anywhere else.

Can you give yourself that?

When you live into Chomo,

You're never missing out.

You realize serendipities of being where you are.

You learn to be okay and make a great moment in whatever moment or circumstance you find yourself in.

Because you are present,

Joy can only be felt in the present moment.

So the place for it is here.

And with this,

A truth emerges.

There's no better place to be than exactly where you are.

There's nothing better to do than exactly what you are doing.

And there's no party to miss because the party is you.

Try on the following statements by listening deeply and perhaps repeating them silently to yourself.

I honor and value my own well-being.

I am choosing to take actions that align with my true desires.

I embrace space for self-reflection,

Growth,

And rejuvenation.

It's okay for me to choose self-care over expectations put upon me.

My learning,

My growth,

And my joy all happen in the present moment.

I favor this present moment.

I choose thoughts that align with how I want to feel.

I know that there's nothing to miss out on when I'm present with myself.

I am the holder of my joy.

My joy is here with me.

I am the party.

Take a long breath and close and expand across your chest and heart.

Exhale,

Release,

And let go a little.

Inhale,

Fill up with energy and knowing that you're doing great things for yourself.

Hold your breath and hold that thought.

You are doing great things for yourself.

Welcome yourself with a smile.

Whatever you choose to do from here,

Let it be rooted in your presence and a celebration of what matters most to you.

Thank you. My FOMO has to do with attending an exciting event 2.5 hours away (and the drive back, on a busy weekend). I’m not sure this nailed that kind of FOMO, but it certainly helped me just the same.
