Welcome to this guided meditation on grounding and centering,
Where we will explore the practice of connecting with the present moment and rooting ourselves in the here and now.
Presence in the here and now is a crucial component of mindfulness.
Being in the here and now means stepping outside of the mind and just being or existing in this moment just as it is.
This means not judging,
Not thinking,
Not trying to control anything,
No agenda,
Just presence and observation.
Let's begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you can lie or sit down.
If you're sitting down,
Use a cushion to support the sit bones,
Making sure your knees fall below the hips.
Let your hands rest on your lap.
Or if you're laying down,
Let the hands rest by the sides.
Make any final adjustments to ensure that you can completely relax and let go today.
And if you feel comfortable doing so,
Begin to let the eyes close.
And if you choose to keep the eyes open,
Rest your attention on a place two feet in front of you.
Let your gaze soften.
Don't try to focus on any point.
Rather,
See if you can extend your vision to the corners of your eyes.
As always,
Remember that you are in control of this experience.
If it becomes too distressing at any point,
Step back and be gentle with yourself.
Now let's begin.
We'll start by taking a few deep breaths,
Inhaling through your nose,
Exhaling through the mouth.
With each breath,
Feel yourself letting go of any tension or distractions.
Let the breath become gentle and easy.
Slow down the breath.
See if you can pull the air into your lower abdomen,
Drawing the diaphragm downward as you breathe in and squeezing the abdomen as you breathe out.
As you continue to breathe,
Let your awareness of the breath dissolve into the background.
Now bring your attention to the sensation of your body connecting with the surface beneath you.
Feel the support beneath you,
Whether it's the ground,
A cushion,
Or a chair.
Imagine yourself becoming one with this support,
Like the roots of a tree extending into the earth and grounding.
As you root into the earth,
Also imagine the earth or the cushion,
The ground,
The seat,
Coming up to meet you.
Focus on these sensations,
Rooting into the ground and the ground rising up to support you.
As you exhale,
See if you can ground your roots even further into the earth while the earth rises up to support you.
Now shift your focus to your breath.
Begin to let the body breathe itself,
Remembering you were born to breathe.
No need to strain or force the breath.
Simply sit back and observe.
Notice the rise and fall of your chest and belly as you breathe in and out.
Let your breath be your anchor,
Grounding you in the present moment,
The here and now.
It may also help to imagine the tree branch swaying in the wind.
And as you breathe in,
The branch sways one way.
As you breathe out,
The branch swings another way.
Just focusing on the breath,
Noticing what it feels like,
Letting go of any thoughts or distractions.
As thoughts arise,
Simply acknowledge them,
Let them pass,
Gently guiding your attention back to your breath.
Remember you are rooted like the tree.
You can imagine your thoughts as leaves drifting from a branch,
Falling down towards the ground,
Slowly drifting away in the distance,
While you,
The tree,
Remain grounded.
Feel the energy in your body,
Like a wind flowing from your head down to your toes.
With each exhalation,
Imagine this energy radiating down through your body into your toes,
Like the roots growing deeper and deeper into the earth.
With each breath,
You become even more firmly planted in this moment,
Secure and present.
Now let's connect with our surroundings.
Imagine yourself surrounded by a beautiful natural setting of your preference.
It could be a forest,
A beach,
A mountain,
Whatever it is,
Just witness and observe the colors,
The plants,
The scenery.
Just focusing on the sensation of sight.
And now feel the sun radiating on your face.
Feel the breeze dancing along your skin,
Smelling all of the smells of the outdoors,
The plants,
The flowers,
Or anything you choose.
Now listen to the sounds of nature,
Perhaps a bird calling,
Waves crashing,
Crickets chirping.
Whatever it is,
Use all of your senses to build this image.
And as you do so,
You become even more anchored into the present moment.
For our senses,
Touch,
Taste,
Sight,
Smell,
Hearing can only happen in this moment,
In the here and now.
Let yourself rest here,
Enjoying the scene in your mind,
Feeling rooted and connected to the here and now.
As we conclude this practice,
Bring your attention back to your breath.
Take a deep breath in,
And as you exhale,
Slowly begin to bring your awareness back to your physical body and the space around you.
As you gently blink the eyes open,
Take time to notice all the colors,
Smells,
Sounds,
And sensations around you.
Gently wiggle your fingers and toes,
Bringing movement back into your body.
You can gently stretch.
Remember that each moment,
You have the power to ground yourself and find stillness amidst the busiest layers of life.
Be like the tree,
Root and rise.
Let the leaves wander,
For you no longer need to carry them.
Trust this moment,
Trust what is in.
Carry this sense of present with you as you go about your day.
May you be well,
May you be at ease,
And may you be free from suffering.
