Rocking The Crone: Mindful Ageing For Women

The aim of this short course is to support and encourage women to find ways to grow old mindfully and with energy and optimism. It's called Rocking the Crone because the motivation for the course comes from an intention to enter the later chapters of our lives with an energetic attitude and, most of all, valuing ourselves and every day of our lives. In the course, you will explore ideas, beliefs, and myths about the ageing process, learn some easy tools to affirm positive thoughts and intentions, and feel more empowered to influence your ageing process as you would like to. The lessons will include a mix of motivational talks, story, and meditations. It is for any woman who is age-aware and want to feel mindful, empowered, and at ease in the ageing process.


Meet your Teacher

Jan specialises in integrating psychology and mindfulness to create powerful outcomes. She is particularly interested in supporting women to be accepting and empowered, and in supporting anyone to have the best mental and energetic health that they can. She is well-published in coaching and in counselling and have enjoyed a successful career in both. She has also published meditations on Insight Timer with her daughter and fellow Insight Timer teacher Keziah Gibbons, whom she shares a joint profile with.

Lesson 1

What Do We Mean By Ageing?

In this session, you will gain a greater understanding of the differences between getting older and aging, exploring how personal and cultural beliefs impact your processes. You will also have the opportunity to consider the concept of life stages and how they might work for you. We end the session with a gratitude meditation for life and acceptance of where we are right now.

Lesson 2

Letting Go Of The Past

In this session, we will explore how women sometimes hang on to past emotions, such as guilt, in ways that stop them from moving toward a future that they really want and which can result in being stuck or dissatisfaction. Through conversational discussion and exploring different perspectives, you will gently shift to explore how you can turn your perspective to feel more free and to focus on the strengths and choices that you have. Today's meditation is a guided visualisation to help you let go of the unwanted while bringing the value of the past into your now and your future.

Lesson 3

The Body Of The Crone

In this session, we will explore some of the mythology around ageing women, including the fairy tale crone. We will suggest more current, inclusive, and empowered models of what it is to be an older woman physically, as well as mentally. We will note how concepts of womanhood change when hormonal shifts occur, and look at how we might live positively with these. In today's guided pratice you will create your preferred symbol of older age and throw it into your future.

Lesson 4

Getting Older In Time

We are often told that time speeds up as we age. In this session, we will explore perceptions of time and what it means to our now when we believe that there is less time ahead than we have put behind us or that the best is behind us. We will explore how being mindful of the now can impact our experience and our expectations of the quality of the future. Our practice today is a slow meditation.

Lesson 5

The Invisible Woman

Many women report ‘feeling invisible’ as they age, finding it harder to make their voice heard, not being seen so easily in a group, being regarded differently. In this session, you will explore what this means for you and look at how you can consider how  this ‘invisibility’ can work for you in a positive way.  Today’s practice is in the form of upbeat affirmations.

Lesson 6

Ageing In Your Boots: The Power Of Your Own Illusions

At the heart of our experience are attitudes and beliefs, and in this session you will focus on creating a self-awareness that suits you well. We will explore how to develop an inner locus of control, where you are less concerned about what other people think of you and more confident in who you are from the inside out. Our practice today is an active meditation.

Lesson 7

Hidden Gems

In the ageing process, it can be useful to keep a keen eye to advantages, as well as perceived disadvantages. For example, there can be a beauty in slowing down and shifting responsibilities, and you may rediscover just how many capabilities and how much valuable experience you have within you. In this session, we explore the hidden gems that are available within. The guided practice in this session is an upbeat guided visualisation to visit the past in order to bring forward all of your resources into your desired future.

Lesson 8

Legacy

Many of us carry memories and concepts of our ancestors, and we will, at some point, be the ancestors for others - people who came before. What is it important that we do or achieve within our lifetime? What would we like to leave behind? In this exploration, we look at how we might enjoy creating ideas of what is our value to the world, however modest, and how we manifest it. Today’s practice is in the form of a guided visualisation.

Lesson 9

Living Life With Adventure

In this session, we explore the notion of ageing as an adventure as we move toward our futures, both known and unknown. We consider the criteria of adventure, and how it can mean different things to different women. We also explore the kinds of attitudes that can support us to move forward in a spirit of discovery. Today our meditation is a deep meditation on the light of infinite possibilities.

Lesson 10

Integrating Your Crone

In this final lesson, you will focus on integrating the learning of the course into the unique woman that you are, to embed your resources and step out more confidently into the future. You will create your personal model of you as the woman you want to be, from the inside-out. Today, our final practice is in the form of active meditation.
