It's that time of year again – the bit between Christmas and New Year. It can be an unsettling and 'discombobulating' time, which of course can be a good thing. In this guided process, I chat a little at first and then take you deep into your own being and stillness – immersed in the sounds of nature and life at my local park (Curia, Portugal).

Hello,

Carl Monson here with the bare bones of being meditation.

A little bit of chat and context before we get down to the bare bones and sink into our being as you may be accustomed to with my endeavour in meditation.

Meditation made simple.

And I'm in the park,

You might be able to hear the sound of water,

A little water feature,

So reassuring sound of flowing water,

Birds singing.

On this morning in Portugal,

Sunny morning,

Dogs scratching around,

Gunshots in the distance,

Life is here and around me and I've found a little oasis of peace that I want to share with you.

In what's the,

I call it the crimbo limbo,

The bit between Christmas and New Year,

I've heard it referred to as the perineum as well,

Which I think is hilarious,

The bit in between.

And it's a time of year that I think discombobulates people and that's a good thing in so many ways.

It takes us out of our routines,

Our structures.

And whilst routine and structure can be helpful,

Because everything is good and bad isn't it,

Everything can be seen both ways,

Everything is a double edged sword,

But the discombobulation that you experience at the moment might be quite useful just to open up a bit of space of awareness of consciousness,

To reflect.

I think that's the best thing about discombobulation isn't it,

And change that is thrust upon people in shock,

Is that you get a moment of conscious awareness to look at the pieces around you.

And this is a good space to be in I think as we approach a new year and there's a sense I think in the general agreement that,

Well every year brings this excitement doesn't it and what we should be doing and how it's going to be the best year yet and there's a collective intensity I think of people thinking it's going to be a breakdown or breakthrough year and all the challenges of the worldly world,

Environmentally,

Financially,

Systems breaking down,

Blah blah blah,

All that sort of stuff.

And I don't mean to undermine or diminish that but where we are at the moment in this meditation is not about that,

It's actually about getting,

Or perhaps discombobulating yourself,

Bringing a crimbo limbo or a perineum moment to your daily life and what may well be a very tumultuous 2020 that's just around the corner.

And I'll give you this gift,

This Christmas gift,

As a,

Is it true dramatic to say a life raft but a touchstone,

A place to come back to because it's what I use it for and I offer it to you in that spirit of just chilling the hell out and getting down as it's called here the bare bones of being because that's,

We've always got that,

Whatever's going on in the world I think it's fair to say we can find some little bit of peace in the day and build out from that peace of being rather than being stuck in the,

On the hot coals of life dancing about trying to figure it out while your feet are burning is not perhaps the most resourceful way of dealing with it or doing life.

So we're coming away from the doing and we're into the being and we're sat upright with our upper body balanced on the chair or whatever you're sat on.

Best not to lie down,

Best not to give yourself a convoluted yoga pose or anything difficult because it's just going to detract from the beauty of being,

Just upright comfort.

And immediately I connect with the breath habitually and I'm checking that habit,

It's a good thing to connect with the breath,

Can't live with it,

Can't live without it,

It would seem,

But you have to have it to live obviously and we forget don't we,

We forget that we're breathing beings to every moment,

Every in breath and the out breath is like life and death really,

Inspiring,

Expiring and as we focus on it,

It brings,

Certainly bringing peace to my body right now and I hope it is to yours too.

Conscious awareness of the breath moving in and out of the body and the joy,

The simple joy and bliss that that can be and gun shots in the distance or fireworks,

Whatever they are,

But it's the world,

The world calling,

Bang bang bang the world and we don't have to go with that right now,

We don't have to go into our thoughts of having our peace disturbed,

The conflict in the world,

Of other people ruining my damn meditation,

None of that,

We're happy here,

Sat,

Being aware of the breath,

Being aware of those sounds,

It's just what's happening.

And as you become more aware of your body sat on the chair,

It's the lakes and panes,

It's precious,

Just be aware of those two like sounds in your soundscape,

What are the sensations in your sensationscape and again give them the same loving respect and awareness,

Give them,

But no need to get thinking about them or busy about them or worried about them,

Just a bit of loving awareness for any tension you might have in your body right now and maybe that loving awareness is like a little massage,

Maybe that will help ease it,

Might not but it might do.

And we're expanding,

Hearing more birds,

More sounds in the soundscape,

More sensations in the sensationscape,

A more ease and peace of pure being,

The bare bones of being,

Your bones sat here on the chair,

Taking it easy,

Enjoying life,

Enjoying the breath of life coming in and going out of the body and there's no time,

We don't know where we are,

What time it is,

What day it is,

Unless we think about that and we don't have to identify with any of that at the moment.

I'm not going to leave you here,

We're not going to be left here but we can enjoy it for this moment while we are here,

Of pure being,

Of loving awareness,

Of no problems unless we think about them.

Just ease and peace and the lightness of the air on our face,

The sunshine or the draft on our skin,

Nothing to think about,

Just pure experience of those things,

Those sensations in the body,

Around the body,

Breath and the being refreshing you,

Refreshing me and the sounds come and the sounds go and it all returns to peace if it's allowed to return to peace.

And let's just be here in the silence of that,

Come back to your sensation,

Come back to your breathing if you start thinking and let's just be here together in these bare bones of being and loving awareness of being alive,

Being life.

Okay?

And then when you're ready,

Excuse me,

When you're ready,

Feel yourself in your body,

Be aware of the breath coming in and leaving the body,

That life giving cycle of breath.

And just gently open your eyes and be aware of where you are and no rush to get back into the worldly world.

Allow the world to connect with your bare bones of being.

Allow your bare bones of beingness just to permeate out so that you can be powerful and aware and complete just for a little while in this world before all the inevitable challenges and worries and problems and all those things that human lives are made of,

Before that comes back to you.

Just enjoy being alive and let your enjoyment of life in some little way or even some big way affect the quality of your life and the quality of the lives of people around you,

Loved ones,

Strangers and let that little bit of the world where you are experience peace,

Joy and being and know that you can always come back to this place whenever you can just make a little time and space for you to get back into the bare bones of your being.
